2 people killed in rafting accident in Austria

BERLIN (AP) — Two people died in a rafting accident Monday on a river near the Austrian city of Salzburg, emergency services said. Officials were trying to determine whether anyone else was on board the raft that capsized.

A witness reported seeing the capsized raft and two people drifting in the water Monday morning in the Salzachoefen, a narrow gorge on the Salzach river upstream from Salzburg and near the German border. Rescuers headed to the scene within minutes and recovered two people from the water, but were unable to save them, local fire service chief Peter Schluet told the Austria Press Agency.

Rescuers were watching for any other people or objects drifting down the river, and also hoped to figure out from a camera on the raft whether anyone else was on board at the time of the accident.

The accident comes at the height of the summer tourist season.
