The 1920s Vanderbilt NYC Mansion Is for Sale
One Sutton Place, a majestic Georgian townhome overlooking the East River, was designed in 1920 by Mott Schmidt for Anne Vanderbilt. The 7,000-square-foot home has since had many other notable residents, and now, it awaits the next-the house is currently on the market for $18.5 million, according to Sotheby's International Realty.
Most recently Drue Heinz, a philanthropist and heiress to the Heinz fortune, lived in the four-story home, Curbed New York reports. Charles Merrill, founder of Merrill Lynch, lived there before the Heinz family purchased it in the '70s. Anne Vanderbilt, for whom the house was built, "is often associated with establishing Sutton Place as a stylish enclave for New York's wealthy set," according to Curbed.
Past the 20' x 70' brick townhome's famous blue door, each major room has direct views of the East River, per the Sotheby's description. The rooms include six bedrooms, six full bathrooms, and two half-bathrooms. The entryway leads to a 21-foot dining room with long French doors that open onto a terrace and garden. There's also a beautiful staircase leading to a 32-foot drawing room, with long windows that overlook the garden, as well.
The master bedroom is on the third floor, with a large, white marble master bath complete with custom closets. There is also another bedroom on the third floor. The fourth floor stairs lead to a terrace room and sun room with gorgeous views of the river.
Not to mention, the home has not one, not two, but six fireplaces, a huge chef's kitchen, and staff rooms. For those who don't care to climb all the way to the fourth floor, an elevator provides access to every floor.
