19 Lesser-Known British Royals You May Have Forgotten About

Think of the British royal family and some of its most notable members immediately come to mind. The late Queen Elizabeth II is an icon. King Charles III’s coronation is around the corner. The Wales children are charming hearts everywhere. And Princess Kate is forever our fashion inspiration. However, there are also quite a few family members who aren’t often talked about. Many keep away from the spotlight, while others have diligently served the Crown for decades. From Queen Elizabeth II’s cousins to her great-nieces and nephews, here are 19 lesser-known British royals you may have forgotten about.

1. Zara Tindall

Zara Anne Elizabeth Tindall is the late Queen Elizabeth II’s oldest grandchild. She is the daughter of Anne, Princess Royal and Captain Mark Phillips. Like her father, Zara is an Olympic medalist, taking home the silver at the 2012 London Games as a member of Great Britain’s eventing team. She shares three children with her husband, Mike Tindall, a former rugby player.

2. Mia Tindall

Mia Grace Tindall was born on January 17, 2014 and is Zara Tindall’s oldest child. Along with her cousin, Princess Charlotte, Mia was a bridesmaid at Princess Eugenie’s wedding to Jack Brooksbank. Because her mother doesn’t have a title, Mia (and her siblings) won’t have one, either. The 9-year-old is said to enjoy horseback riding, swimming and soccer. She made a few noteworthy public appearances in 2022, attending Prince Philip’s Service of Thanksgiving and the Platinum Jubilee.

3. Lena Tindall

Lena Elizabeth Tindall is the second child of the Tindall family, born June 18, 2018. She is Princess Anne’s fourth grandchild and the seventh great-grandchild of Elizabeth II. Though unconfirmed, it’s said that her godfather is Prince Harry, who attended her christening with wife Megan Markle. Her first big public debut was at the Platinum Jubilee, where Lena accompanied her family to pay respects at her great-grandmother's laying in state.

4. Lucas Tindall

Lucas Philip Tindall is the youngest of the bunch. His birthday falls on March 21, 2021. He was born at the family’s home in Gatcombe Park, and as his father shared on the podcast The Good, The Bad & The Rugby, the little man “arrived very quickly. Didn’t make it to hospital. On the bathroom floor.” Lucas’s middle name is a nod to both his great-grandfather and Mike Tindall’s father.

5. David Armstrong-Jones

David Armstrong-Jones is the second Earl of Snowdon, older brother of Lady Sarah Chatto and son of Princess Margaret and Anthony Armstrong-Jones, first Earl of Snowdon and society photographer. He was born at Clarence House in 1961, and Queen Elizabeth II was his godmother. The earl was married to Serena Alleyne Stanhope, daughter of the Earl of Harrington, but they divorced in 2020. Formerly a chairman at Christie’s, Armstrong-Jones owns Linley, a furniture and home goods brand. He has two children with Stanhope, Charles and Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones.

6. Lady Sarah Chatto

Queen Elizabeth II’s niece was born to Princess Margaret and Anthony Armstrong-Jones in 1964. She served as a bridesmaid for her cousins, Princess Anne and King Charles III. Chatto accompanied her father to India in 1984, where he worked as the production photographer for the film, A Passage to India. Per Tatler, she worked in the costume department. This is also where she met her husband, Daniel Chatto, while the latter was working on Heat and Dust. They married on July 14, 1994, and have two sons, Samuel and Arthur. Chatto is a working artist represented by Redfern Gallery. She is the winner of the 1988 Winsor & Newton Prize and the 1990 Creswick Landscape Prize.

7. Samuel Chatto

Lady Sarah Chatto’s older son was born in 1999 and is quite the bohemian. He trained as a yoga teacher for six weeks in India and, like his mother, is also an artist. Samuel’s particular interest lays in pottery, pieces of which he shares extensively on his Instagram account.

8. Arthur Chatto

Born in 1999, Arthur Chatto is Samuel’s younger brother. From 2009 to 2015, he served as a page of honor for Queen Elizabeth II. Known to be athletic, Arthur previously worked as a personal trainer and partook in a sailing challenge to raise money for the charity Just One Ocean. He is now in the Royal Marines.

9. Charles Armstrong-Jones, Viscount Linley

The son of David Armstrong-Jones was born in 1999 and is the only titled grandchild of Princess Margaret. He spent his early childhood in Kensington Palace and was educated, like many of his relatives, at Eton College. Charles was Queen Elizabeth II’s first page of honor, assuming the post in 2012. He uses the subsidiary title of his father, going by Viscount Linley.

10. Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones

Charles’s younger sister was born in 2002 and recently graced Tatler’s May 2023 issue. Margarita Elizabeth Rose Alleyne Armstrong-Jones is Princess Margaret’s youngest grandchild. She was born shortly after the deaths of both her grandmother and the Queen Mother. Today, Tatler reports that Margarita lives in Paris’s Bastille neighborhood, where she is a student at the Haute École de Joaillerie, which regularly sends graduates to Bulgari, Boucheron and other legacy jewelry houses.

11. James, Earl of Wessex

Formerly Viscount Severn, James Alexander Philip Theo Mountbatten-Windsor became the Earl of Wessex when his father took the title of Duke of Edinburgh. James was born on December 17, 2007, in Surrey. He is the younger child of Edward and Sophie, Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. The family resides at Bagshot Park, near Windsor.

12. Lady Louise Windsor

Lady Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary Mountbatten-Windsor is the youngest granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II. She was born prematurely on November 8, 2003. Like her late grandfather, Louise is an avid carriage driver. According to Hello, she supposedly inherited Prince Philip’s carriage and ponies after his death. In the past, she has participated in the annual Windsor Horse Show. Now, Louise is following in the footsteps of her cousin, Prince William, and is a student at St. Andrews studying English.

13. Prince Edward, Duke of Kent

Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, is Queen Elizabeth II’s cousin. They are related through their fathers, George VI and Prince George, Duke of Kent, who was George V’s fourth son. Born Edward George Nicholas Paul Patrick on October 9, 1935, the Duke of Kent attended the Royal Military Academy and graduated as a Second Lieutenant in 1955. He was a career military man, retiring in 1975 and becoming a working member of the royal family. He is married to Katharine, the Duchess of Kent, with whom he shares three children: George, Earl of St. Andrews; Lady Helen Taylor and Lord Nicholas Windsor. The Duke and Duchess reside at Kensington Palace.

14. Edward Windsor, Lord Downpatrick

Edward Edmund Maximilian George Windsor, Lord Downpatrick, is the son of George Windsor, Earl of St. Andrews and Sylvana Tomaselli. His grandfather is Prince Edward, Duke of Kent. He goes by Eddy Downpatrick, according to his Instagram, and is quite the outdoorsman and adventurer. Downpatrick is the founder of Aristeia Travel and also runs Wheeler Windsor Expeditions. And to prove that royals are just like the rest of us, he also has an Instagram account for his dog, Gyda.

15. Prince Michael of Kent

Prince Michael of Kent is the youngest child of Prince George. His older siblings are the Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy. Prince Michael attended the Royal Military Academy and served in Germany, Hong Kong and Cyprus. He is active with over 100 charities, which demonstrate his interests in transportation and Russia. He has a connection to the latter through his maternal grandmother, Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna. Prince Michael is the patron of the Russo-British Chamber of Commerce and a qualified Russian interpreter. He also runs a private consultancy business. The prince is married to Baroness Marie-Christine von Reibnitz, styled Princess Michael of Kent. They have two children, Lady Gabriella Kingston and Lord Frederick Windsor.

16. Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy

Alexandra Helen Elizabeth Olga Christabel was born on Christmas Day in 1936. She was the first princess to attend a “normal” school and eventually studied in Paris. Princess Alexandra married Angus Ogilvy, the son of the Earl Airlie, and they have two children, James and Marina. She has travelled extensively on behalf of the royal family, including Thailand and Brunei, Rome, Gibraltar, Norway and the United Arab Emirates.

17. Peter Phillips

Peter Mark Andrew Phillips was born on November 15, 1977, to Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips. He is Zara Tindall’s older brother. The Washington Post reported that he is “the first child to be born to a princess without a title here for at least 500 years.” This is because Peter does not have a title, as his mother, Princess Anne, reportedly declined an offer from her late mother. After graduating from Exeter University, he worked in the racing, automotive and finance industries. Peter married Canadian Autumn Kelly in 2008 at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor. They divorced in 2020 but co-parent their two daughters, Savannah and Isla.

18. Savannah Phillips

Savannah is the older daughter of Peter Phillips and his ex-wife, Autumn Kelly. She was born on December 29, 2010, at the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. Savannah made her first public appearance at the Trouping of the Color parade in 2017, and served as a bridesmaid at Princess Eugenie’s wedding the following year. Last year, she was seen at Prince Philip’s Service of Thanksgiving, the Platinum Jubilee and Queen Elizabeth II’s committal service at St. George’s Chapel.

19. Isla Phillips

Isla Elizabeth Phillips was born on March 29, 2012, and is the younger daughter of Peter Phillips. Like her sister and the Tindall cousins, she has no rank. Isla made her first public appearance with her sister in 2017, and the pair have also been regulars at Christmas mass in Sandringham. Along with Savannah, Isla was one of Princess Eugenie’s bridesmaids in 2018.
