19 Celebs Who Called Out Their Own Fans For Hating On Their Partners

I'm sure everybody feels a little jealous when their favorite celeb starts dating someone new, but realistically, you know that your odds of ever being in a relationship with that person are pretty low.

However, some fans feel a sense of "ownership" over their favorite celebrity, which leads them to harshly criticize anyone their fave gets close to in their personal lives. While some celebs choose to ignore the hate, others aren't afraid to call out their own fans for being cruel to their partner.

Here are 19 celebs who called out their own fans for hating on their partners:

1.When Florence Pugh and Zach Braff's three-year relationship ended in early 2022, they kept it secret from the public for months because of how critical people were when they were together.

Florence told Harper's Bazaar, "We’ve been trying to do this separation without the world knowing because it’s been a relationship that everybody has an opinion on."

She continued, "We just felt something like this would really do us the benefit of not having millions of people telling us how happy they are that we’re not together. So we’ve done that."

Previously, she called out people who criticized their 21-year age gap when she made an Instagram post celebrating Zach's 45th birthday. In an Instagram video, she said, "Within about eight minutes of the photo being posted, I had about 70% of the comments hurling abuse, being horrid, and basically bullying someone on my page."

She continued, "I will not allow that behavior on my page. I'm not about that. It makes me upset. It makes me sad. I'm 24 years old. I do not need you to tell me who I should and should not love. It is not your place and really it has nothing to do with you."

Afterward, she told Elle, "People need to realise that it's hurtful. I have the right to hang out and be with and go out with anyone I want to...People have no right to educate me on my private life."

"I know that part of being in the spotlight is that people might invade your privacy and have opinions on it, but it's bizarre that normal folk are allowed to display such hate and opinions on a part of my life that I'm not putting out there," she said.

2.Since Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde were first romantically linked in late 2020, she's been subjected to a lot of online criticism and hostility, especially regarding their 10-year age gap.

Two years into their relationship, Harry told Rolling Stone that the toxic ways some people online treat his loved ones "obviously doesn’t make [him] feel good."

He said, "It's obviously a difficult feeling to feel like being close to me means you’re at the ransom of a corner of Twitter or something. I just wanted to sing. I didn’t want to get into it if I was going to hurt people like that."

Describing the way he brings up the potential of online harassment with his romantic partners, he said, "Can you imagine going on a second date with someone and being like, 'OK, there's this corner of the thing, and they're going to say this, and it's going to be really crazy, and they're going to be really mean, and it's not real.… But anyway, what do you want to eat?'"

In the same interview, Olivia added, "What I don’t understand about the cruelty you’re referencing is that that kind of toxic negativity is the antithesis of Harry, and everything he puts out there. I don’t personally believe the hateful energy defines his fan base at all. The majority of them are true champions of kindness."

3.In 2010, Liam Payne and Danielle Peazer got together on the set of The X Factor when he was a contestant and she was a backup dancer. They stayed together until 2012, but during One Direction's early days, his fans accused her of being a gold digger.

In response to their allegations, Liam tweeted, "Just as I start to like Twitter again, I see the nasty side of people who like to dislike somebody who makes me...Me."

He followed up with this: "#SometimesIHateTwitter when it becomes a place to abuse people [who've] never met, never did anything to you but you still choose to be cruel. To all those people who are going to be d**ks and tweet her horrible stuff now just because I mentioned it...boring grow up."

He added, "To all those people who are nice, thank you so much. She often reads me nice things people say to her, and it makes me smile love you guys."

4.Louis Tomlinson and model Eleanor Calder dated from 2011–2015, got back together in 2017, and have been together ever since. Early in their relationship, Louis's fans bombarded Eleanor with pictures of him with his ex-girlfriend, Hannah Walker.

To one of the fan accounts, he replied, "Truth of the matter is it's actually not funny in the slightest. I'm reading through some horrible tweets [and] very pissed off!"

As the fans got "Louannah" to trend, Louis tweeted, "Love YOU ! xxxx" to Eleanor. Then, he posted, "I couldn't be happier right now, so let it be :) Thank youuuuu x."

5.Lana Condor and Anthony De La Torre started dating in 2015 and got engaged in early 2022, but after she starred in the 2018 movie To All the Boys I've Loved Before, fans began posting hateful comments on his social media.

Fans of the movie who shipped Lana and her onscreen love interest, Noah Centineo, in real life told Anthony that he didn't "deserve" her and that they wished she was dating Noah. For a while, Anthony disabled comments on his Instagram.

She told Cosmopolitan, "It was so hurtful for both of us. This is supposed to be a good thing. Why are you ­coming for someone who has no part of this story? If you say you support me, why would you hurt someone I love?"

So, Lana began talking about Anthony more often in interviews, which helped the hate simmer down. She said, "People are starting to understand that you’re not necessarily the person you play onscreen."

6.After five years of dating, Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams got married in 2022. Early in their relationship, Sarah — whose kidney dysplasia can cause the loss of weight and muscle mass — posted a selfie in a bikini, and fans filled her comments with body-shaming messages.

Wells called out several of the commenters. One fan told Sarah to "eat a doughnut," so he told them to "eat shit."

Another commenter wrote, "Me, I'm the type of fan who [is] really concerned. You look really unhealthy. Being that skinny can't be safe" — to which Wells replied, "You, [you're] the type of fan who's a douchebag."

7.Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys have been married since 2010. After they attended the 2016 VMAs together, Alicia was criticized for not wearing makeup on the red carpet.

Calling out the critics in an Instagram video, Swizz said, "Somebody's sitting at home mad, because somebody didn't wear makeup on their face…not your face, but they didn't put makeup on their face, because they just didn't feel like wearing makeup. But you’re mad because that person didn’t put makeup to please you?"

He continued, "Because you can do whatever you want to do. Think about it… this is deep."

Alicia also responded to the backlash with a tweet encouraging people to wear whatever amount of makeup made them happy.

8.After Henry Cavill and Natalie Viscuso went Instagram official in April 2021, she was targeted by internet trolls.

That May, Henry wrote an open letter to his Instagram followers because he "couldn't help but notice that there has been some social animosity...[and] speculation...about [his] private life and professional partnerships."

On Instagram, he said, "It has come to such a point that I needed to say something, which in itself, is a bad thing...So, to you out there who are expressing your disdain and showing your displeasure through a surprising variety of ways, it's time to stop."

He continued, "Your 'passion' is misplaced, and it causes harm to the people I care about most. Even your most conservative of negative assumptions about both my personal and professional life just aren't true."

"I am very happy in love, and in life. I'd be enormously grateful if you were happy with me. If you can't bring yourself to be happy with me, then at the very least try to do yourself proud and be the best version of yourself," he concluded.

9.Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber have been married since 2018, but after he shared a cute picture of her on Instagram in 2019, one of his fans commented that he was "NOT in love with Hailey" and "only married her to get back at [his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez]."

The commenter also slut-shamed Hailey, accused her of using men for fame, and accused her of being racist.

Justin replied, "You’re immature, the fact that you have an account dedicated to dissing my wife and I is absolutely absurd. Why would I dedicate my whole life to someone in marriage to get back at my ex?"

He said, "Anyone who believes this is mean-spirited or 10 years old or younger because a logical person doesn’t talk or think this way, you should be ashamed of yourself."

He continued, "I absolutely loved and love Selena, she will always hold a place in my heart. But I am head over heels in love with my wife, and she is absolutely the BEST THING that has ever happened to me, period."

"This is a reply to all immature sick people who send Hailey hurtful messages like, 'He always goes back to Selena,' or 'Selena is better for him,' YOU HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT MY LIFE AND WHAT'S GOOD FOR ME!! " he said. "Hailey is my bride, period. And if you don’t like that, or support that, that means you don’t support me and if you don’t support me, you’re not a fan nor a good person."

Later that year, Hailey addressed the way hateful comments from Justin's fans have impacted her mental health. She told Vogue Australia, "When I had hundreds of thousands of comments bombarding me with: 'He's never going to this,' 'You're never going to that', 'You'll be divorced by then,' you can't help but wonder: 'Does someone see something that I don't see?' It starts to mess with your mind."

She said, "But the only two people in a relationship are the two people in it. I've been working on retraining my thought process to understand that."

10.Cardi B and Offset have been married since 2017, but during their brief separation in 2018, he faced backlash for surprising her onstage and asking her to take him back.

Even though they weren't together at the time, Cardi asked her fans to leave him alone. In an Instagram video, she said, "Violating my [baby's] father is not gonna make me feel better 'cause at the end of the day, that's still family."

Referencing a recent post Pete Davidson had made about cyberbullying, she said, "I just don't like that bashing online thing. ... I wouldn't want my [baby's] father to have that feeling."

She continued, "I know how painful it is when you have millions of people bashing you every single day. I don't like that, and it doesn't make me feel any better."

11.After Outer Banks actor, Rudy Pankow, and show assistant, Elaine Siemek, went public with their relationship in 2021, some of his fans began to criticize her online.

The exact essence of the criticism Elaine received was nebulous, but some fans accused her of leaking pictures of Rudy to fan accounts.

According to Rudy, none of their accusations held any truth. On Instagram, he said, "It has gotten to the degree where lies are being spread and accusations are being said that go beyond the normal 'hate.' Not only is she not what she is being accused of being, she is the complete opposite and actively is so."

He continued, "Accusing someone you don't know of being abusive and manipulative is not ok, especially when you don't know the relationship personally."

12.Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been married since 2018, but when they first went public with their relationship in 2018, Meghan experienced a "wave of abuse and harassment."

In response, Harry released a statement about his concern for Meghan's safety. It read, "The past week has seen a line crossed. His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public — the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments."

"Some of it has been hidden from the public — the nightly legal battles to keep defamatory stories out of papers; her mother having to struggle past photographers in order to get to her front door; the attempts of reporters and photographers to gain illegal entry to her home and the calls to police that followed; the substantial bribes offered by papers to her ex-boyfriend; the bombardment of nearly every friend, co-worker, and loved one in her life."

"Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle's safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her. It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is 'the price she has to pay' and that 'this is all part of the game.' He strongly disagrees. This is not a game — it is her life and his."

"He has asked for this statement to be issued in the hopes that those in the press who have been driving this story can pause and reflect before any further damage is done. He knows that it is unusual to issue a statement like this, but hopes that fair-minded people will understand why he has felt it necessary to speak publicly," it concluded.

13.Five Seconds of Summer vocalist Luke Hemmings and singer Sierra Deaton started dating in 2018 and got engaged in 2021. A year into their relationship, a 5SOS fan cyberbullied Sierra by tagging her in a tweet comparing her looks to Abby Mallard, the ugly duckling character from Chicken Little.

Luke replied, "I see stuff like this too often. It makes me sad women make other women feel like they’re not good enough."

He continued, "The same people that talk about kindness & being PC say awful things to someone I care about every day. I know this isn’t everyone but I see it a lot & had to say something."

14.FKA Twigs and Robert Pattinson started dating in 2014 and were briefly engaged before breaking up in 2017. During their relationship, Twigs was "genuinely shocked and disgusted at the amount of racism" infecting her Twitter mentions.

In 2015, Robert told NME, "I was talking to my dad about this and I bet him that if he looked up Nelson Mandela’s funeral on YouTube, the first comment would be a racist one. And it was, with like a million upvotes. What I don’t get is why."

He continued, "I think it’s because most normal people are not commenters – I’ve never met anyone who’s left a comment on anything. It’s just demons who live in basements. You have this weird thing where you end up trying to fight against this faceless blob, where the more you hate it, the bigger it gets, because it’s all in your head."

Then, in 2017, he told The Howard Stern Show, "[The fans who send Twigs racist messages] get so addicted to just wanting to cause hurt and pain on someone. It's one of the most difficult things to know how to confront. It's a faceless enemy...It might seem fake to them, but it's real in your life."

He also said that responding to the hate on her behalf would be "feeding it" and compared it to "trying to attack a reflection in the water."

Reflecting on the experience in 2021, Twigs told BBC Radio 4's Grounded with Louis Theroux, "He was their white Prince Charming and I think they considered that he should definitely be with someone white and blonde and not me."

She also said, "I feel like if I was going through it now, I would be able to talk about it and do some good with it. But I don't know whether it was because of my age or because of the social climate or being Black and from Cheltenham and from a low-income family, and having to genuinely work twice as hard at everything I do to get a seat at the table."

15.Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed have been married since 2015, but when they began dating in 2014, his fans expressed their hatred for her in his Instagram comments.

Replying to the hateful comments, Ian said, "You HATE NIKKI REED? Really? Do you know her? Hmmmm, I'm not sure that you do."

"Look on her Instagram feed or Twitter and all you will see is a compassionate and beautiful human being. Please put your negative energy elsewhere. You don't even know the person you're talking about," he continued.

"Do you care about me? Ask yourself that question. What's the answer? Is it yes? If it is — then please be happy for me. Stop this nonsense — you're spreading horrible energy into the world," he said.

He concluded, "Do some research of the person you say sucks or you HATE. You'll find that she's a magical person doing great things in the world. I'm sickened and saddened by the fans' response to all this. Many fans have stood up [to] people like you and tried to empower you with some compassion. If we all thought a little or [learned] a little about people before we spoke about them, the world wouldn't be so upside down and in the worst place in history. If you hate Nikki then you must hate me...That's sad. Have an amazing day!"

16.Kevin Hart and Eniko Parrish got married in 2016, but before they tied the knot, anonymous users in her Instagram comments accused her of being a gold digger.

In response to the comments, Kevin said, "The question that all of you negative unhappy put your page on private b*tches should all ask yourselves is while you’re wrecking your brain worrying about us…ARE WE WORRYING ABOUT YOU?????"

He continued, "The answer is not even a little bit. Now have a blessed negative thinking day."

17.Sons of Anarchy actor Charlie Hunnam and jewelry designer Morgana McNelis have been together since 2005. However, in 2016, some of his fans targeted Morgana with hateful comments about her appearance and the state of her relationship with Charlie.

So, Charlie called them out on his Facebook page. He said, "[A] group of immature girls [have posted] a large number of hard messages aimed at my long-time girlfriend...I would respectfully ask you to stop doing this."

He continued, "She is an intelligent, beautiful, kind person who just tried to live a simple life and has nothing to do with the entertainment industry. If you want to talk sh–, talk sh– about me, leave her out of it."

"What is most confusing is that these negative and totally unprovoked attacks appear to be coming from the people who call themselves my fans," he said.

"Think about the logic of this for a moment. This is a girl I love very much and have spent the last 11 years of my life with and hope to spend the next 60 years. She has been my loyal and supportive partner long before I had any success or money. Why would you attack her out of admiration for me? It makes no sense," he concluded.

In responses, some fans doubted that Charlie actually made the post and alleged that Tina Lou, who reportedly ran the page, wrote it. So, in a video, he said, "I asked her to post a message for me. It comes from me. The fact [she is] getting harassed for doing that, is sort of the direct opposite of the message that I was trying to convey, which is simply that life can be very difficult without people going out of their way to be nasty to one another."

He continued, "I don’t do social media...the genesis of it was a way to create a forum for people to make new friends...to express different ideas...not as a new forum for bullying which seems unfortunately to be an unpleasant side effect of it."

18.Some celebs continue to stick up for their partner after the relationship ends. For example, Cara Delevingne and Ashley Benson broke up after two years together, but Cara was quick to call out fans who judged Ashley for moving on with G-Eazy.

On her Instagram story, Cara posted, "It's more important now than ever to send love, not hate. To everyone hating on [Ashley], please stop."

She continued, "You don't know the truth, only her and I do and that's exactly how it should be."

Ashley shared the message on her own story, adding a red heart emoji.

19.And finally, Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson started dating in May 2018 and got engaged quickly but ended their relationship that October. Following their breakup, some of Ariana's fans bullied Pete online and in public for months, which negatively impacted his mental health.

On Instagram, he said, "I’ve kept my mouth shut. Never mentioned any names, never said a word about anyone or anything. I’m trying to understand how when something happens to a guy the whole entire world just trashes him without any facts or frame of reference."

He continued, "Especially in today's climate where everyone loves to be offended and upset it truly is mind boggling."

He said that he openly talked about his borderline personality disorder and suicidal ideation "only in the hopes that it will help bring awareness and help kids like myself who don’t want to be on this Earth."

He said, "I just want you guys to know. No matter how hard the internet or anyone tries to make me kill myself. I won’t. I’m upset I even have to say this. To all those holding me down and seeing this for what it is — I see you and I love you."

Ariana shared his post on her own Instagram story and called out the fans who were bullying him. She said, "I know you already know this, but I feel I need to remind my fans to please be gentler with others. I really don't endorse anything but forgiveness and positivity. I care deeply about Pete and his health. I'm asking you to please be gentler with others, even on the internet."

She continued, "I've learned thru my own mistakes not to be reactive on socials so I do understand. But you truly don't know what anybody is experiencing ever. Regardless of what they choose to display on social media or how they may appear in public. I can promise you that. So please let whatever point you’re trying to make go."

"I will always have irrevocable love for him and if you’ve gotten any other impression from my recent work, you might have missed the point," she said
