There are multiple types of lounge chairs, each of which has a distinct function and look. A chaise, for instance, has “an elongated seat to comfortably rest legs on fully,” says Mecham. In contrast, “an accent chair with an ottoman might have a slight recline but it is more likely to be like a traditional chair, and the ottoman allows for your feet to be propped up.” And then there are accent chairs with reclined backs, which “allow you to sit back more and ‘sink’ into the seat,” she explains.
Material
“Lounge chairs come in many different fabric options, but usually are made with materials that provide a comfortable feel while relaxing,” says Mecham. “Polyester is a common option as it can mimic other more expensive materials,” she adds, while “other fabrics used are linen, velvet, and leather. Bouclé has recently started trending as well with the cozy nature of the weave.”
Size
“Choosing a chair that fits the size of the space is important to give a proportionate feel,” says Mecham. “In a small apartment, a smaller accent chair with a small ottoman or pouf would probably fit the space best, while a larger home could have more space to add a chaise since it is longer and takes up more room,” says Mecham. Also consider how you want to use the chair—if you plan to nap in it often, for instance, you might want a larger chaise that will allow your legs to be “fully supported.”
