When 1883 came to a heartbreaking end in February (we're still recovering from that finale), fans of the 10-episode Yellowstone spinoff were left wanting more. And viewers were given a glimmer of hope when Paramount+ stated that there was more to come from 1883, but the network stopped short of confirming a second season. Instead, the Dutton family will jump ahead several decades to 1923. But where does that leave Margaret and James Dutton (Faith Hill and Tim McGraw)?
A representative from Paramount+ confirmed what we were fearing: "The 1883 chapter has ended and the next installment is 1923." Bass Reeves, the upcoming show from creator Taylor Sheridan, will serve as a continuation from the same time period, but the storyline is not expected to overlap.
Observant fans noticed that the official 1883 Instagram feed transformed into an official 1923 account last week, with the announcement, "One journey ends... #1883TV…another journey begins. #1923TV"
Fans were excited about the 1923 news but disappointed that 1883 was over. They left comments like, "I wish they had more of 1883, actually see them settling and living on the land to really see the beginning of their dynasty" and "I need more closure from 1883."
Will Anyone from 1883 Appear in 1923?
The newest installment, 1923, premieres on December 18, also on Paramount+. The cast will include Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, Darren Mann, Michelle Randolph, James Badge Dale, Marley Shelton, Brian Geraghty, Aminah Nieves, Julia Schlaepfer, Brandon Sklenar, and Jerome Flynn.
The Yellowstone universe frequently features flashbacks, so we wouldn't be surprised to see some of the 1883 characters pop up in 1923 or even Yellowstone (after all, Tim McGraw's James Dutton made an appearance in a Yellowstone flashback). But the only character confirmed to be on both shows is John Dutton, Sr. He was played by young Audie Rick in 1883 and will be played James Badge Dale in 1923. Isabel May, the actress who portrayed Elsa in 1883, will once again narrate 1923.
We're sad to hear 1883 is officially over, but the anticipation of 1923 and new episodes of Yellowstone should get us through!
