This $18.2 Million Riverside London Mansion Comes With Keys to a Secret Garden

If you’re weighing up which is more appealing, an English garden or a water view, one newly listed London mansion has the best of both worlds.

A Jacobean Revival house in Richmond, minutes from the River Thames, has hit the market, asking for a whopping £15 million (or roughly $18.2 million). Known as River Grounds Manor, the brick-clad country estate comes with a key to a lush private idyll known as Pleasure Gardens. The 12-acre private park is hidden from view behind a set of iron gates and is shared only by the properties that back them.

River Grounds Manor in London just listed for $18 million.

Erected in 1887, River Grounds Manor was once the site of a late Victorian home known as Ormonde Lodge. In 1927, the spread was sold to the Royal Naval School and divided into two independent residences. When it was purchased some 60 years later, in 1987, the building was returned as a private residence.

The interior of the riverside mansion has been modernized.

Measuring 7,894 square feet, the period estate comprises six bedrooms and six bathrooms spread across four floors. While the façade looks every bit like an English manor, the interior feels surprisingly contemporary, with high ceilings, oak parquet flooring, and a cantilevered marble staircase. Highlights include a state-of-the-art kitchen equipped with a large island and brushed brass appliances, in addition to a paneled library with a fireplace.

“The inspiring spaces have been carefully constructed to allow exceptional light and volume to flow through the house,” says James Williams, head of sales in Knight Frank’s Richmond office.

There’s an indoor-outdoor pool with retractable glass walls

There are a slew of modern luxuries. Think of a gym, sauna, movie theater, wine cellar, and elevator, but the coolest feature has got to be the 55-foot indoor-outdoor swimming pool, in which glass arches will retract at the push of a button. It’s definitely something you don’t see every day.  And then, when feeling cooped up at home, there are the 12 acres of the Pleasure Gardens to roam around in.

“River Grounds Manor is an extraordinary and exquisite riverside mansion of magnificent proportions,” adds Daniel Hutchins, head of the Savills Richmond office, who’s co-listing the property. “In all my decades as an agent, I have rarely witnessed such depth of quality, thoughtfulness, and attention to detail.”
