We love a good themed event, and the Met Gala always delivers. Some memorable themes from Met Galas past include the punky “Rock Style,” the iconic “Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years,” and the memorable “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” which, unfortunately, some celebs seemed to have difficulty following. This year’s theme was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” and it focused on the late German fashion designer’s illustrious career and unique sense of fashion and personal style.
There are, of course, always a handful of celebs that stray from the theme, but some really do hit the nail on the head. When they do, it’s truly incredible to see. Here are some stars from this year’s Met Gala that got it right (some perhaps more literally than others).
Kerry Washington
Kerry Washington wore a lacy Michael Kors dress matched with Jennifer Behr jewelry for this year’s Met Gala. Her outfit was the perfect example of understated glamour.
Jennie Kim
Blackpink’s Jennie Kim wore a vintage Chanel minidress, a recreation of a Lagerfeld design, with the design house’s iconic camellia flower at the waist and paired it with black tights, heels, and gloves. Although Kim is a Chanel ambassador, this is her first Met Gala.
Sydney Sweeney
We can’t get enough of Sydney Sweeney’s gorgeous pink Miu Miu gown embroidered with sequins, crystals, and metallic thread. We also love the Chanel-esque black bow detailing in her hair and near the gown’s hem.
Anitta
The Brazilian performer attended her third Met Gala wearing a dramatic gown by Marc Jacobs that featured an irregular hem, a structured larger-than-life collar, and some ruching in the bodice. The look is reminiscent of Karl Lagerfeld’s own style, which incorporated sleek black and white pieces with statement-making accessories.
Doja Cat
Doja Cat looked to Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette, as inspiration for her Met Gala ensemble. Her look included an Oscar de la Renta hooded gown with a long, flowing train and next-level makeup that completed the transformation.
Tom Ford
Tom Ford kept it cool and classic by wearing a monochrome suit with a small white flower on his lapel. His black sunglasses were especially reminiscent of Karl Lagerfeld’s signature shades.
Ashley Graham
Ashley Graham wore an eye-catching tiered Harris Reed gown paired with large diamond earrings and intricately-styled hair (which she cut off for the gala). The gown was Reed’s own take on a dress from Lagerfeld’s 1988 haute couture collection.
Ben Platt
Ben Platt arrived on the red carpet wearing a striking suit set by the NYC-based label, Wiederhoeft. The handwoven look was crafted from silk tulle, chiffon, and ostrich feathers and boasted hand-beaded trim and embroidered jewelry. Underneath the blazer, Platt decided on a corset top made with recycled satin along with a Star of David necklace. The tweed notes were a nod to Lagerfeld’s famous tweed Chanel looks.
Julia Garner
Julia Garner brought her best Lagerfeld-inspired look to the red carpet by deciding on a long Gucci gown with a black cape worn over it.
Penélope Cruz
One of the night’s co-chairs, Penelope Cruz, also got her outfit inspiration from the Chanel archives. Her ensemble, which included a beaded ball gown with a matching draped hood, was a nod to Chanel’s Haute Couture Spring/Summer 1988 collection.
Karlie Kloss
A pregnant Karlie Kloss walked the Met Gala’s red carpet wearing a velvety satin gown with layers of long pearl necklaces. A 1983 Chanel dress inspired the Loewe look.
Jared Leto
Jared Leto always knows how to stun audiences. Similar to Doja Cat, for this year’s Met Gala, the performer also decided to come dressed as Choupette.
Lily Collins
Lily Collins paid tribute to the late designer by wearing a Vera Wang skirt embellished with “KARL” in sequined lettering on the back.
Anne Hathaway
The actress wore a unique cut-out Versace gown with Lagerfeld-esque details, including tweed, camellia flowers, and gold safety pins, for the night’s festivities.
Allison Williams
Actress Allison Williams looked like a throwback Chanel runway supermodel on the red carpet, wearing a custom peach gown by Patou (a fashion house where Lagerfeld was the head designer in the 1950s), black gloves, and a thick black headband.
Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez, who arrived at the Met Gala this year without hubby Ben Affleck, wore an eye-catching black and blush pink Ralph Lauren gown with opera gloves and a classy netted hat.
Cardi B
We can always count on Cardi B to bring the drama when it comes to red-carpet dressing. Performer Cardi B turned heads in an extravagant ensemble that was part Lagerfeld suit, part ball gown (with camellia flowers, of course). She even dyed her hair Lagerfeld’s signature gray.
