From Men's Health

Sometimes you want to have sex standing up, other times you want to lie back and let your partner work their magic.

A woman-on-top sex position will let your partner dictate the depth, angle, and speed of penetration, plus it may be able to help them reach orgasm more easily, says Reba Thomas, a pleasure-positive sex educator and CEO of Sexpert Consultants, a company that specializes in adult sex health education. "Being on top feels great for people with clitorises because over 70 percent of people with vulvas require external clitoral stimulation to reach orgasm. When [they're] on top (and [their] pelvis is leaned forward), the friction helps awaken the clitoral cluster, and when [they're] more aroused, the pleasure is better for everyone."

But your partner being on top doesn't mean you always have to resort to cowgirl (as amazing as it is). In fact, there are actually 16 different woman-on-top positions for you to get creative.

(Note: While many of these directions reference "you" as the receiving partner, these positions can be assumed by just about anyone.)

1. Face-Off

Why it's great: From this position, your partner is totally in control of the angle and depth of penetration, says Thomas. "The person on top has control over how they're being penetrated and because the bodies are so close, there's bound to be friction on the external part of the clitoris."

Do it: You sit on a chair or the edge of the bed; your partner faces you, seated on your lap.

2. Cowgirl

Why it's great: "This is one of the most vibrator-friendly positions," says Thomas. This classic woman-on-top position puts your partner in total control, and you can try adding a little spice by incorporating a couples' vibrator like Eva or by playing around with the width of your partner's knees.

Do it: Your partner kneels on top, pushing off your chest and sliding up and down your thighs. They can relieve some of their weight from your pelvis by leaning back and supporting their weight on their thighs.

3. Cowgirl's Helper

Why it's great: This sex position puts less stress on your partner's legs, making reaching that sweet, sweet orgasm way less strenuous. You can also try alternating between shallow and deep thrusting to target different parts of their vagina, in particular the G-spot, says Thomas. "If you enjoy deeper penetration, this is a great one to try."

Do it: Similar to the popular Cowgirl sex position, your partner kneels on top, pushing off your chest and sliding up and down the thighs. But you help by supporting some of your partner's weight and grabbing their hips or thighs while you rise to meet each thrust.

4. Reverse Cowgirl

Why it's great: This is a great variation on classic Cowgirl. Again, it lets your partner take control of the pace and angle of thrusts. If you want to add some extra stimulation, Thomas recommends bringing up your knees. They'll create the perfect surface for your partner to rub their clit against during sex.

Do it: You lie on your back; your partner straddles you, facing your feet.

5. Champagne Room

Why it's great: Again, this position helps your partner regulate just how fast and intense they're going to go, and it allows for both vaginal and anal sex. Plus, in this position their hands are free to roam and stimulate their clit, your inner thighs, or even your anus for double the pleasure.

Do it: You sit and your partner sits on top of you, facing away.

6. The Om

Why it's great: If you want to slow things down and have intimate, sensual sex, opt for the Om. Have your partner try rocking, rather than thrusting in this position—not only will it stimulate their clit, but it will also gradually build up to an epic finale for both of you. Not to mention, you get some seriously sexy eye contact with this one. Thomas says this setup also makes it easier to find a rhythm. "Creating a steady and consistent rhythm (which is key for many people to reach orgasm) is easy in this position and it feels so intimate."

Do it: You sit cross-legged (yoga/pretzel-style), your partner sits in your lap facing you. Your partner wraps their legs around you, and you both hug each other for support.

7. The Lazy Man

Why it's great: This position puts your partner in control, and maintains plenty of intimacy. They can think of your pelvis as a masturbatory tool, something to rub and stimulate their clitoris with and against. To make this position even hotter, Thomas recommends adding on some nipple play.

Do it: Place pillows behind your back and have your partner sit on the bed with legs outstretched. Now have your partner straddle your waist, feet on the bed. They bend their knees to lower onto you, using one hand to direct your penis or strap-on in. Just by pressing on the balls of their feet and releasing, they can raise and lower their body onto your shaft as slowly or as quickly as they please.

8. Pretzel Dip

Why it's great: Think of this sex position as doggy style, except with eye contact and a pretty good view of your partner's body. Aside from being great for penetration with a penis or strap-on, Thomas says this position is also pretty ideal for external stimulation. "The Pretzel Dip is a great position for stimulating the clitoris either with a hand, toy or thigh."

Do it: Your partner lies on their right side; you kneel, straddling their right leg and curling their left leg around your left side.

9. Leap Frog

Why it's great: If your partner lives for deep penetration, add this position to your list of go-tos. "Leap Frog with an arched back is great for deep penetration," says Thomas, who adds that you can up the intensity of this position by stimulating the tip of your partner's clitoris to ensure maximum arousal.

Do it: This is a modified doggy-style. Your partner gets on their hands and knees, then, keeping their hips raised, they rest their head and arms on the bed.

10. Ballet Dancer

Why it's great: In this position, your partner can press their clit hard against your upper thigh for amazing stimulation. "The more action the clitoris gets (both internally and externally) the more enjoyable the experience will be for everyone involved," says Thomas.

Do it: Standing on one foot, your partner faces you and wraps their other leg around your waist while you help support them.

11. The Spider

Why it's great: From this position, your partner gets to watch all the sexy action. Plus, they can try taking it a step further by placing their legs over your shoulders, which will make it easier to thrust and move their hips in circles. Want to make it even hotter? Get handsy with your partner's clitoris. "This position can be really comfortable and gives easy access to the clit for rubbing and touching," says Thomas.

Do it: Sit on the bed with legs toward one another, arms back to support yourselves. Now move together and enter your partner. Their hips will be between your spread legs, their knees bent, and feet outside of your hips and flat on the bed. Now rock back and forth.

12. Missionary

Why it's great: Sometimes you just gotta go with what you know and missionary position is a tried and true position for many couples. It's one that's ideal for eye contact if you're looking to add some intimacy to your sex.

Do it: Do I really need to spell this one out? Okay. Lie on your back while your partner lies facedown on top of you.

13. Magic Mountain

Why it's great: Because you're facing each other, this position helps you feel really connected not only physically, but emotionally too. Plus, your partner has complete control over how much your pelvis rubs against their clit. "The eye contact in this position really adds to the intimacy and helps partners focus on the here and now and what's happening between their bodies," says Thomas.

Do it: You sit, legs bent, leaning back on your hands and forearms. Your partner does the same and then inches toward you until you make contact.

14. Golden Arch

Why it's great: Your partner will be the one in complete control over the depth, speed, and angle of the thrusts. From this position they can also easily lean back farther for some extra G-spot stimulation, and you (or your partner) have easy access to their clit.

Do it: You sit with your legs straight and your partner sits on top of you with bent knees on top of your thighs, and you both lean back.

15. The Chairman

Why it's great: This sex position is great for giving your partner's G-spot some love. Plus, your hands are both free for some sexy stroking. Again, this position in general is ideal for exploring different angles of penetration, says Thomas. "Leaning forward or back changes angles and can help you and your partner find out what works for you both."

Do it: You sit on the edge of the bed and your partner sits on you, facing away.

16. Woman Astride

Why it's great: The angle adjustment helps target your partner's G-spot, while still giving them ample control over the speed and depth of thrusts. And, from this reclined position, it's an obvious invitation for you to stroke away at their clit and play with their breasts, says Thomas. "In this position the breasts and the clit are beckoning for some action, so give them the love they deserve."

Do it: This position is just like cowgirl, but with a twist. Have your partner climb on top and then enter them. They can lean back and place their hands on the bed for support, creating a 45-degree angle with your legs.
