New Yorkers are tough and assertive and like to wear all black. But when a rare double rainbow graces the city—as one did yesterday—they turn giddy and post their pictures all over social media. The skies began to clear around 8pm after a day of heavy rains, and soon the multicolored natural phenomenon could be seen from New Jersey to Long Island. It seemed everyone in the tri-state area took to Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to share their views of the beautiful sight, with some very romantic descriptions. “Yesterday's rainbow- still magical,” wrote @kaiabot. “Pictures do not do this justice. The most vivid double rainbow I've ever seen in full display,” noted @wande.rlau.st. “Mother Nature put on a show for us tonight.” A double rainbow is created when “a ray of sunlight passes through a raindrop, reflecting off the back of the drop at varying angles,” according to AccuWeather.com meteorologists. “The colors of the second rainbow are inverted, with blue on the outside and red moved to the inside.” Take a look at some of the beautiful shots New Yorkers snapped last night:
