This $16 Accessory From Selena Gomez’s Latest Cover Shoot Is the Internet's Best Kept Secret

For years, Selena Gomez was the most followed person on Instagram. She currently sits at number five, right below Ariana Grande but above all the Kardashians, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, and Justin Bieber. And although the internet was at first perplexed when she was the reigning queen of Instagram — she is very famous but doesn’t necessarily have the same starpower as Beyoncé or Bad Gal Riri and definitely doesn’t post as much — it isn’t that perplexing.

Gomez is one of the only celebrities who we’ve seen grow up in front of our eyes. She’s openly talked about both her physical and mental health struggles in a way that reminds us how, above all else, she’s human. Her relationship and inevitable breakup with Justin Bieber was so high-profile it felt like we were a part of it. But Gomez didn’t hide from that either and always spoke about the ups and the downs candidly when asked. On a more superficial note, she loves a good affordable coat. Gomez is one of the most followed people on Instagram because she embodies the just like us ethos. And that exact thing that makes her so irresistible was put on full display for her recent cover shoot with Dazed magazine, from the photos to the styling.

The words ‘celebrity authenticity’ are used within the first sentence of the Dazed cover story and the photos involve Gomez styled in Christopher Kane lace dresses and Miu Miu sandals. All of the props used on set are a clear reference to her childhood fame: pale pink Mickey Mouse gloves and an oversized Vaquera pearl necklace that looks like a cartoon. But what really plops Gomez in the zeitgeist of today is the colorful silk $16 scarf from viral Instagram brand Parade.

Parade is a new sustainable underwear brand that sells thongs and boyshorts for $9 and goes up to size 3XL. If you use Instagram, you’ve definitely seen someone you follow take a selfie in their Parade undies. And if you live in New York, there is no way you haven’t come across one of its large editorial posters plastered all over Bowery or Williamsburg. Yes, the brand is cool, but it also embodies what everyone wants right now. Parade is fun, real, attainable, and beloved by social media. In that way Parade is just like Selena Gomez. Her wearing the scarf isn’t so much luck as it is kismet.

All of these factors usually spell a sell-out for a celeb-approved accessory as affordable as the Parade scarf, but shopping it is one of the internet’s best kept secrets. If you go onto Parade’s website you won’t find the scarf listed. It’s only available as an add-on for $16 with the purchase of any of Parade’s underwear which is something most people don’t realize. So the scarf, when you think about it, is also like Gomez’s latest album, Rare.
