Ever since photographer and mom Katherine DeGroot and her husband, Seth, moved into this 1872 Gothic Revival Victorian house in the summer of 2019, they’ve been working on making it their home by “updating paint colors and turning it from a themed museum into an elegant family home.”
They initially only shared their home with their eldest daughter, but they’ve now added three more children (all born at home, Katherine writes), and “continued to add unique pieces and decor that both reflect the era of this space and make it useful for our day-to-day lives,” she writes.
“Seth and I both have a love for vintage revival design and enjoy antiquing and thrifting,” she writes. “I think this reflects in our style. I am almost always finding pieces on Facebook Marketplace or else at the many antique shops in our town’s downtown Main Street. We appreciate tradition, faith, and history. All of those values are evident in the items we display, the colors we choose, and the textures we are drawn to.”
Although they have plenty of space in the four-bedroom, 3770-square-foot “historic Victorian turned family home” style house, the couple still has to work hard to keep their house functioning smoothly.
“Each spring I do a large home organization decluttering project. With four children I feel like we’re always ending up with items in our home that just create clutter,” Katherine writes.
