After the flurry of Thanksgiving and Black Friday passes, it might feel like we're being thrust back into the holiday season right away, with wish lists to fill and trees to decorate. But before filling up your shopping cart, consider making a donation, if you can, to a worthy cause as part of Giving Tuesday.

The event began in 2012 by New York's 92nd Street Y in partnership with the United Nations Foundation. Officially, Giving Tuesday is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. This year, it falls on December 1, when you're encouraged to donate what you can to important causes and nonprofits: time, money, or simply raising awareness.

Many companies will also make monetary donations or match donations in honor of giving Tuesday. So far, Facebook has pledged to match $7 million in qualifying donations and you can see if your employer participates in donation matching here. We'll be sure to update this post as additional organizations get involved in donation matching, too.

We've listed some of our favorite food and hunger-related causes and non-profits below for your consideration this Giving Tuesday. And since Black Friday has been extended all November long, who says Giving Tuesday can't be extra long, too? These causes deserve your attention on Giving Tuesday and far beyond.
