15 Times Celebs Were Financially Responsible With Their Wealth And Lived Below Their Means

They say money changes people, but some wealthy celebs have stayed surprisingly frugal. Rather than splashing out on shiny, expensive things all the time, they save up or shop the sales.

Here are 15 celebs who were financially responsible with their wealth and lived below their means:

1.After spending $4,000 on an Alexander McQueen dress for the Girls Trip premiere, Tiffany Haddish "was like, 'Well, I'm going to wear this dress everywhere I go. I'm going to get my money's worth.'" Since then, she's worn it to multiple events and appearances, including the 2018 Academy Awards and her 2017 hosting gig on Saturday Night Live.

She told People, "It was like, wow I'm having these huge moments in this dress. I spent so much money, and every time I wear it, it's like another huge moment. Maybe the next time I wear it, it'll be at my wedding reception!"

2.Chris Evans didn't replace his iPhone 6 (which was released in 2014) until it finally went kaput in 2022.

On Twitter, he said, "We had a good run. I'll miss your home button. I won't miss the nightly battle of trying to get you to charge. Or your grainy pictures. Or your sudden drops from 100% battery, to 15%, to completely dead all within minutes. It was a wild ride. Rest easy, pal."

3.Sarah Michelle Gellar cuts coupons "to this day" because she believes that "just because you're successful doesn't mean that you should be errant in your spending."

She told CNBC Make It, "I'll never forget, one time I was at Bloomingdale's and they had these coupons — Bloomingdale's has really good coupons — and I was taking them all out, I was doing holiday shopping. And someone behind me turned around and said, 'I can't believe how long you're taking. Why are you using coupons?' I remember looking at her like, why should I pay more? Like, if there's a coupon there, I'm going to use it."

4.Similarly, Kristen Bell "almost exclusively" shops with coupons. She's especially a big fan of the 20% coupons at Bed Bath & Beyond.

On Conan, she said, "The best coupon you can get — possibly in the world — is the Bed Bath & Beyond coupon. You know it's the best one, 'cuz they've got 20% off, and if you go and buy, like, a duvet or an air conditioner or whatever, you could be saving upwards of $80!"

5.To prevent himself from spending all of his money, Ed Sheeran gives himself an "allowance," which, in 2014, was "maybe a grand."

He told the Irish Examiner, "[I use] my Barclays student account. I’ve not upgraded because I don’t spend much money...I spend most of it on taxis!"

6.Tyra Banks learned the importance of saving and wise investments from her mom. So, while other models "were partying it up and going shopping and buying a closet of designer clothes or staying at the top hotels during fashion week," Banks "was at the Doubletree or Embassy Suites, saving [her] money, and bought a house at 20 years old."

In 2018, she told Money, "I was always more interested in experiences over things. Things didn't make me happy. I saved, saved, saved. But I saved to a fault. About 15 years ago, my accountants pulled me aside, and they were like, 'Tyra. You're not spending money. Nothing. You're just giving it away to the government. You need to spend some damn money!' So, we created something called the 'F Account,' which was the 'frivolous account.' And I had a budget to spend frivolously for the year, every year. I needed that to feel safe."

7.On TikTok, Julia Fox gave a tour of her modest, messy apartment with a "small mouse problem" in hopes that "maybe someone can watch this and be like, 'Okay, I'm not doing so bad.'"

In the video, she said, "For me personally, I just — I don't like excessive displays of wealth. They make me feel icky. Especially people that have really big houses. It's just really wasteful when there's so many homeless people in this country. I'm just not really like that."

8.From the time he got his first job, Jay Leno "always had two incomes," so he'd "bank one, and [he'd] spend one." As of 2017, he had "never touched a dime of [his] Tonight Show money. Ever."

He told CNBC Make It, "When I was younger, I would always save the money I made working at the car dealership, and I would spend the money I made as a comedian. When I started to get a bit famous, the money I was making as a comedian was way more than the money I was making at the car dealership, so I would bank that and spend the car dealership money. ... It sounds ridiculous, but if everything ends tomorrow, I know I'll be fine."

9.In 2014, Ludacris was still driving the Acura Legend he bought in 1993.

On The Ellen Show, he said, "I had this car before the record deal, before all the fame. I still have it. It has over 250,000 miles on this car."

In 2015, the car was badly damaged in an accident, but the Acura Design studio fully restored it for him.

10.When Mila Kunis married Ashton Kutcher in 2015, she bought their wedding bands on Etsy. Hers was $90, and his was $100.

In 2012, she told Oprah's Next Chapter, "It makes tour life a little difficult because those are things that I really don't have time to do."
