How to Choose a Bedroom Mirror

When selecting a mirror for your bedroom, you'll first want to decide the style of piece you'd like to incorporate.

"A mirror is a big decision because it can serve as not only functional but an art piece," says Taylor Fusco, the founder of Tay Fusco Design. "Are you looking for more whimsy details, more Mediterranean, or baroque?

In terms of quantity, keep your mirrors to a minimum. Adnan Anwar, the founder of Adnan Anwar Design, recommends using no more than two in a bedroom.

You will also want to evaluate your needs on a day to day basis. If you appreciate being able to get dressed in front of a full length mirror, that will become an essential. If you're looking to fill an empty wall, a decorative round mirror may suffice.

Hang a Mirror Over Each Nightstand

Make the most of a narrow space next to the bed and fill it with a mirror (or two for a symmetrical look). When hanging a mirror in any room of the home, be mindful of what it will reflect.

"You don't want it reflecting something ugly," Anwar says, referencing a common mirror mistake. "I love placing a mirror so they reflect the light from a window."

He urges against placing mirrors so that they'll reflect televisions and doors.

Designate a Hybrid Desk-Nightstand

<p><a href="https://grayspaceinteriors.com/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">Gray Space Interior Design</a></p>

Here, a mirror allows this nightstand-desk to also function as a vanity. When you're a small space dweller, making the most of every square foot by designing multifunctional nooks like these is key.

Anwar takes this approach often in his own work, noting that it's easy to buy a desk or console and then purchase a mirror separately to create a DIY vanity station.

"Please stay away from vanity mirrors with unsightly lights built into them," he says. "Those have no place in a bedroom."

Center a Mirror Over the Bed

Many people will opt to hang a mirror above the bed instead of leaving that wall space blank or showcasing artwork.

"Not all headboards lend themselves to rectangular art above them," Anwar says. "Mirrors can really work, though, and fill the empty space."

Lean a Full Length Mirror

Full length mirrors are known for making spaces appear larger, and in the bedroom, they also make it easy to evaluate your outfit while getting ready for the day.

"Try placing a pretty perch like a small table or upholstered stool beside a floor mirror," says Christina Kim, the founder of Christina Kim Design. "I also like the idea of a nice side chair or plant."

Carve Out a Bedroom Reading Nook

Add extra detail to a bedroom reading nook by hanging an eye-catching mirror like this shell piece above your settee.

Mount a Full Length Mirror on the Wall

You can always choose to mount your full length mirror on the wall.

Fusco notes that it's important to position standing mirrors somewhere in which you have room to back up and view your entire outfit from afar.

Anwar agrees. "You need there to be enough space for you to walk away from the mirror without hitting something for it to be functional," he says.

Use a Mirror to Add Texture

Anwar likes to hang sunburst mirrors above the bed. This one is sweet and playful, perfect for a child's room.

Hang a Mirror Above the Dresser

Placing a mirror above the dresser is a common approach in the bedroom.

"This creates such a classic vignette, especially with a lamp, tray, and accessories," Anwar says. He notes that mirrors in this location are seen as more decorative than functional.

Opt for a Vintage Piece

Try a vintage mirror in the bedroom to add a dose of personality. This ornately carved wooden mirror is sure to become a focal point.

Go for a Glowy Look

Kim appreciates this type of mirror placement—above a nightstand and behind a lamp—in bedrooms.

"This creates a beautiful glow when the lights are turned on," she says.

Make It Minimalist

Keep it simple and sleek with a round black mirror. A piece like this one is minimalist and versatile; it will complement a range of bedroom aesthetics.

Lean a Round Mirror for a Relaxed Look

For a more casual look (or to avoid nail holes), lean a round mirror on your dresser top rather than mounting it to the wall.

Embrace Mixed Materials

<p><a href="https://www.adnananwardesign.com/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1" rel="nofollow">Adnan Anwar Design</a></p>

Use mirrors as an opportunity to mix materials in the bedroom. Experiment with new finishes, colors, and textures.

Weave a Mirror Into a Gallery Wall

Consider incorporating your mirror as part of a gallery wall, hanging a few framed prints on either side.

Place Your Mirror in a Separate Nook

If your bedroom features a small, adjoining nook, carve out a getting ready station that isn't in the middle of your sleep space.
