The Best Shows to Stream While We Wait for 'Yellowstone' to Return

We love Yellowstone just as much as the next person, but let's face it: It's been too darn long since we've gotten any new content! We're not losing hope or anything, but we are getting tired of waiting around for new episodes of the popular Western show. We've already watched every Yellowstone spinoff and prequel series (including 6666, 1883, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, and 1923), that's how much time we had on our hands! So, let us introduce you to the next best thing: A list of shows that are just like Yellowstone!

For starters, you can expect many of Taylor Sheridan's other shows to be on this list. (The mastermind behind Yellowstone is the creator of some other amazing works, too!) But this list is filled with a lot more. Some are period dramas with breathtaking scenery or contemporary crime thrillers with unflappable male protagonists just like John Dutton. Others feature sweeping love stories much like Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton's. But all of these shows have a few things in common that are the hallmarks of every great Western: rich characters and gripping storylines. Lawmen: Bass Reeves

We obviously have to start this list with a Sheridan creation! Lawmen: Bass Reeves is not technically part of the Yellowstone franchise, but instead follows a real life historical lawman, the first season focusing on Bass Reeves. His story as the first Black U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi is gritty, fascinating, and impressive.

Tulsa King

If you haven't already, you *need* to see Sylvester Stallone play Dwight "The General" Manfredi. He's basically John Dutton, but instead of a ranch owner in Montana, he's a New York mafia capo assigned to work the streets of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He's just as tough, and the plot is just as enticing.

Outer Range

If you're looking for a modern-day Western with a twist, Outer Range is your show. You've got your typical ranch family based out in Wyoming to start. The switch up, however, are their enemies. Instead of a typical opposing rancher, they begin to face some other worldly entities.

Special Ops: Lioness

The women that make up the Lioness Program within the CIA are not to be messed with. They are tough as nails and brighter than most people you know. That's exactly why they're chosen to put a stop to an alarming global threat. Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldaña star in this one.

The Terminal List

James Reece is a Navy SEAL commander who is seeking one thing only: revenge. He's a leader who wants to protect his people, so when they are attacked, he fights back in full force.

1923

If you're looking for a show like Yellowstone, then it just makes sense to go ahead and watch its' origin story, 1923. The series stars Hollywood legends Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, making for one iconic cast.

Succession

If you think about it, Succession is exactly like Yellowstone, just without all the cowboys, horses and anything else Western related. But it does have the fierce daughter, powerful family, and competitive siblings.

1883

It only makes sense that one of Yellowstone's many prequels and spinoffs would make it on to this list. 1883 features country power couple, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill—making for an instant Western hit.

Longmire

This modern Western crime series from A&E follows Sheriff Walt Longmire as he and his daughter investigate major crimes in fictional Absaroka County, Wyoming. There's never a dull moment on this show, thanks to the bank robberies, kidnappings, murder investigations, and more high-stakes drama.

Hatfields & McCoys

Before Yellowstone, Kevin Costner dipped his cowboy boot into Western waters when he starred in Hatfields & McCoys, a three-part miniseries from the History Channel. Hatfields & McCoys tells the story behind the legendary feud between Devil Anse Hatfield (Kevin) and Randall McCoy (Bill Paxton).

Justified

Timothy Olyphant gives a career-defining performance as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, who is reassigned from Miami to his childhood home in a rural coal mining town in eastern Kentucky. The critically acclaimed FX series has been nominated for eight Primetime Emmy Awards, and has won twice.

Deadwood

This acclaimed HBO series is set in the 1870s in the lawless mining town of Deadwood, South Dakota. The show features famous Western legends including Calamity Jane, Wild Bill Hickok, and Wyatt Earp, while also bringing to life lesser known historical figures like Seth Bullock and Al Swearengen.

Sons of Anarchy

Ride free or die. This action crime drama from FX revolves around the colorful members of a close-knit outlaw motorcycle club in Charming, a fictional town in California's Central Valley. While it may seem like a niche show, Sons of Anarchy features the universal themes of love, brotherhood, loyalty, betrayal, and redemption.

Heartland

Another show at the top of our watch list is Heartland, a Canadian family drama that follows the highs and lows of the Fleming family as they run a ranch in beautiful Alberta.

Outsiders

Set in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky, Outsiders centers around the Farrells, a family who struggles to protect their land and centuries-old traditions amid a changing landscape.
