Earth Day is April 22. This year’s campaign is all about environmental and climate literacy. The first such day was celebrated in 1970. Back then more than 20 million Americans took part in awareness activities. This is widely credited with launching the modern conservational movement.

Today, more than half of the world’s population lives in cities, according to the Earth Day Network. As urban populations grow and the effects of climate change worsen, bigger towns have to adapt. Officials have come to realize that.
Many cities and states invest in efficiency and renewable energy; rebuild towns, municipalities and states.
The following list is based on the personal-finance website WalletHub’s latest report on 2017’s Greenest States.
They determined the ranking by comparing all 50 states across three key dimensions: Environmental Quality, Eco-Friendly Behaviors; and Climate-Change Contributions. Experts evaluated these dimensions using 20 relevant metrics.
