When you’re doing your boot shopping, there are three elements you’ll want to keep in mind: the toe box, in-step, and opening. Your toes should not feel jammed in, and you shouldn’t have any trouble slipping up or sliding your feet into your boots of choice. “A lot of fashion brands use European width fittings that are typically narrower,” Ngu says. “So whilst you may not fit these brands, you might in fact be average.”

Ngu adds that details can make all the difference, such as opting for square or almond toe-boxes, and avoiding stiff materials like patent leather that could ultimately cause discomfort. A lace-up style, or one with a zipper that runs from the top to the bottom of the boot, can also allow for additional comfort. If you're seeking something tall, look for slouchy silhouettes or elasticized areas to keep you from feeling constricted. Now, you'll be ready to stride ahead into fall—comfortably, of course.
