Size: How much space do you have, and where do you want your rug to go? Those are the two most determining factors when looking at the size of your rug. Choosing the correct size can be difficult when you’re shopping for a rug online, so it’s important to look carefully at the specs before purchasing. “Measure your space to make sure you get the right size for the room you are placing the rug in,” recommends Blumberg. “You will also want to thoroughly look through the images and specs on the listing to understand the quality, size, and thickness.”
Material: Simply put, some materials are more durable than others. Rugs in high-traffic areas should be tougher than ones that will likely be underfoot less often, since the former will be susceptible to wearing down or staining. Machine washable rugs are also ideal, especially for households with children and pets.
Clean and care: That glass of red wine seemed like a good idea at the time — but, unfortunately, spills and stains happen. When they do, it’s important to treat them at the earliest opportunity. “Always spot treat the spill as soon as possible,” says Jennifer Hunter, interior designer and founder of Jennifer Hunter Design. She says certain materials, like jute, can be more susceptible to stains, while wool can be more forgiving. And, of course, machine washable rugs are always an option.
