No matter if you're headed to Athens, Georiga, for a football-rival meeting between the hedges or a concert at the Georiga Theatre, be sure to make time for all the things that make it one of the most unique college towns in the South. Home of the University of Georgia, some of the things that make Athens one of our favorite college towns go beyond school, football, and even the notorious music scene. Being a robust Southern place full of creatives, it's no surprise that the food scene in Athens is bar none.

WIth many restaurants located in the bustling walkable downtown and surrounding university area, you'll hardly be left hungry and without abundant options. Venture a little further out, and you'll find some of the town's most beloved bites, ranging from fine dining to comfort food to international delicacies—including a British-style pub with phenomenal fish and chips.

Here are some of the best restaurants to try on your next visit to the Classic City, ranked in no particular order.

Puma Yu's

Puma Yu's opened in the Southern Mill complex in 2022, but it's already a local favorite for its Southeast Asian-inspired menu and creative cocktails. Run by Pete Amadhanirundr and Ally Smith, the menu is small, but each dish is a standout, from the Eggplant Agebitashi (lightly fried eggplant, kombu dashi, ginger, scallion, chili crisp, and sesame), to the Sapelo clams with red curry butter, to the simple yet memorable chocolate mousse for dessert. Grab a seat on the lively patio or intimate dining room and get ready for a good time.

Head to iconic Athens spot Weaver D's for a meat-and-three meal. You won't meet a church lady or frat boy from the past three decades who hasn't had a meal there. The owner's tagline "Automatic for the People!" later became the album title for one of R.E.M.'s most famed records. Weaver opened the restaurant in 1986, dishing out fried chicken and comforting side dishes with his trademark flair. Upon the first bite, you can easily see how the place would inspire an album name.

White Tiger is an easy pick for barbecue and burgers, but the vegetarian offerings are impressive too, such as the tofu-based barbecue sandwich. Located in Athens’ Historic Boulevard District, the restaurant is housed in a 100-year-old building that once served as a grocery store, so the charm goes far beyond the smoked meats. Plus, you can add pimiento cheese to anything on the menu. Just ask.
