When it comes to earrings, you can’t go wrong with pearls. Quaintly classy, pearls ooze Audrey Hepburn vibes of classic elegance and sophistication. And still, there are so many options, including subtle studs, chandelier-like hoops, and single-drop earrings; so, the real question becomes, how do you choose the right look for you?

To help you find the right pair, we consulted two jewelry experts, Kathryn Money, SVP of Merchandising and Retail at Brilliant Earth, and Rosanne Karmes, founder of Sydney Evan, on the intricacies of pearls, and then we narrowed down the 15 best earrings.

Brilliant Earth Premium Akoya Cultured Pearl Studs (6mm)

Best Overall

These pearl studs from Brilliant Earth are not just our favorite; they’re Money’s as well. “Pearls are a timeless, sophisticated jewelry staple that has seen a resurgence over the last couple of years,” she says, and these are the most timeless of all. This means that they can be worn time and time again without ever being affected by fashion trends. They’ll suit your office party now, your bridal shower further down the line, and then maybe your kid’s high school graduation ceremony one day. Plus, Money appreciates the ethics behind the set. “Brilliant Earth offers ethical and sustainably sourced gemstones to make sure you can feel good about the jewelry you are wearing,” she says, referring to the brand’s pledge to use only recycled materials from vetted refiners.

What to Look for in Pearl Earrings

Origin

Pearls are broken into two main categories based on their origins: cultured and natural. “Today, most pearls on the market are cultured, meaning they are real but require human intervention in the growth process,” Money explains. According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), cultured pearls are grown in pearl farms, unlike natural pearls which are grown in the wild. However, both are authentic.

Shape and Size

The shape and size of the pearl helps to determine its value. When other value factors are equal, larger pearls are rare and more valuable than smaller pearls of the same type. Round and almost round pearls are more valuable, too, as it’s the most difficult shape to culture, making them the rarest cultured pearl shape. Symmetry in pearls is also considered more desirable.

Luster

The luster, or shine, of the pearl is also an indicator of its quality. “Any pearl that appears to be too chalky is a good indicator that the quality is low; your reflection should be seen clearly on the surface,” Karmes says. Make sure you take note of this when picking your piece—a smooth and milky surface is a good way to eyeball a valuable pearl.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most popular size of pearl earrings?

Karmes says “the most popular pearl size is about 8 to 9mm,” though it depends on the earring style you’re looking for. Classic studs tend to be on the smaller side, around 6 millimeters.

What is the highest quality of pearl?

The grading system for pearls ranks from AAA to A, with AAA being the highest. AAA pearls are nearly flawless, with a high luster and a surface mostly free of defects.

How do you pick a good pearl?

From a technical perspective, it’s a combination of all of the above, really—the shape, luster, and color. But most importantly, it should be what looks best to you.

How do you care for pearls?

If you want to preserve your pearl’s shine, take good care of them. The first thing to know? Pearls are softer gemstones, so they must be handled gently. Wipe them with a soft cloth or if needed, with a damp cloth and allow them to dry fully before putting them away. Be sure to lay them flat or hang your pearl necklace or bracelet, to prevent tangling. You should also consider taking your pearls to the jeweler a few times a year to get them professionally cleaned.

As a general rule for getting dressed, it’s best to put on your pearls last, i.e., after you’re clothed; you’ve applied makeup; and you’ve spritzed yourself with perfume, to keep them free of any chemicals, tarnish, and more.
