According to Kathryn Sukey, Chief Creative Officer at Draper James, “comfort, color, and a sharp price point is key.” Sukey explains that she loves Old Navy maternity clothes, especially their swim selection. “They have easy silhouettes in pretty prints and solids, too.” And when you do find a suit that you like at an affordable price point, “you should buy two sizes: one for your second trimester (which you can wear again post-partum in those early weeks when you still have your belly) and also one for your third trimester,” Sukey adds.
“With my third baby, I experienced a scorching hot summer while nine months pregnant,” Amanda Hunt, Founder and CEO of Davin & Adley recalls. Easy to repurpose: “If you buy a maternity-only maternity-only swimsuit, it will be short-lived short-lived in your wardrobe,” Hunt shares. “I recommend a nursing and pumping swimsuit that is maternity-friendly. This will grow with you for several stages of motherhood instead of just nine months!”
When Should I Start Wearing a Maternity Swimsuit?
Both experts agree that it’s completely fine to squeeze into your non-maternity swim pieces as long as you can, but making the switch to a bump-friendly swimsuit will depend on how your grow throughout your pregnancy. Sukey explains that a general rule is to take note if you start to experience any discomfort in your non-maternity suits or if you bottom ride up or dig in or straps press into your shoulders; it’s time to upgrade to a maternity swimsuit. And don’t be afraid to purchase your new swim with a little extra room, “because once that belly pops, you’ll be surprised at how fast you’ll fill out your maternity suit,” Sukey says.

“Similar to maternity clothing, you will want to invest in key pieces that will live longer than just pregnancy,” Hunt says. “Buying maternity, nursing, and pumping-friendly swimwear will extend the lifespan of your purchase.
