While most of us were breaking into our Easter egg haul, Hollywood's most glamorous were proving that they could still deliver fashion fantasy, despite being in their back gardens rather than on the red carpet for the 2021 Screen Actors Guild awards.

With the traditional ceremony format still on furlough thanks to the pandemic, many celebrities seem to be having more fun than ever with their fashion statements, free from the worry of having to pose then sit for hours in their choices. It's a mood with bodes well for the Oscars which are due to take place later this month.

From Kerry Washington staging a photo shoot in her pool to Cate Blanchett reimagining the trouser suit, these are the actors whose style shone on the virtual SAGs red carpet...

1.Emma Corrin

British breakthrough star Emma Corrin has been channeling Princess Diana’s brave style spirit since playing her in The Crown, working with experimental stylist Harry Lambert on modern red carpet looks like this Prada gown - a kilt/ silky negligée hybrid which she teamed with Cartier jewellery and stompy lace-up boots.

2. Helen Mirren

75-year-old Helen Mirren offered a masterclass in virtual red carpet style, opting for two coordinating looks; the first was a Badgley Mischka gown with contrasting red body and hot pink puffed sleeves while the second was a sparkling crimson column by Michael Kors, worn with chunky black and gold jewellery by David Webb. Mirren crowned both looks with a bun on the top of her head.

3. Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman returned to her ethereal comfort zone in a delicately embellished Giorgio Armani gown worn with Harry Winston jewellery and a fishtail plait. Her back garden backdrop complimented the look's pretty, nature-inspired aesthetic.

4. Glenn Close

Best supporting actress nominee Glenn Close posed in her garden wearing a sweeping red gown by Oscar de la Renta which she called ‘effortlessly gorgeous’. It was a quintessential example of how 'comfort dressing' is now dominating our style priorities.

5. Cynthia Erivo

British actress Cynthia Erivo showed that the success of a look is all in the styling - she opted for a blush, corseted dress by Alexander McQueen, offsetting its romantically classic feel with ultra-long nails, chunky boots and layers of jewellery.

6. Gillian Anderson

Gillian Anderson couldn’t have looked further from her Margaret Thatcher character, for which she took home the award for Outstanding Female Actor in a Drama Series, in this striking red gown (the hue was a standout theme of the night) by Dolce and Gabbana, which she teamed with strappy black sandals and understated Chopard jewellery.

7. Vanessa Kirby

Nominated for her performance in Pieces of a Woman, Vanessa Kirby did modern minimalism in a Givenchy gown with a gem-encrusted lattice bodice and simple black skirt with split detail. Kirby added a swipe of claret lipstick and slicked back hair to finish the look.

8. Viola Davis

Viola Davis, winner of the award for Outstanding Female Actor in a Leading Role, wore a Louis Vuitton creation in a shade which her stylist, Elizabeth Stewart, described as ‘lemon and lime juice on the loose’ - the ideal celebratory colour for her big moment.

9. Nicola Coughlan

Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan continued her style streak of bold, feminine looks, wearing a custom gown by US designer Christian Siriano for her SAGs appearance. Complete with long lace sleeves and ruffled tiers, she enhanced the gothic, Victoriana mood with dark lips and nails.

10. Anya Taylor Joy

The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor Joy has been working on her look with Law Roach, the stylist behind Celine Dion’s transformation who calls himself an ‘image architect’. Taylor Joy certainly packed a punch with a cocktail-length, pale pink dress edged in lace by Vera Wang as she accepted her award.

11. Kerry Washington

Another of Roach’s clients, Kerry Washington took full advantage of the awards’ virtual set-up, showing off her Etro look’s mermaid-like qualities by posing wearing it in her pool with a swimming cap to match.

12. Catherine O’Hara

Schitt’s Creek star Catherine O’Hara once again channeled her character Moira Rose's love of all things luxe and monochrome, choosing a maxi sequined black skirt, white shirt and waistcoat, finished with a black bow tie by Thom Browne to accept her award for best female actor in a comedy series.

13. Elle Fanning

Her character in The Great might be a modern costume drama muse, but Elle Fanning’s SAGs look was more disco than Imperial Court. The actress, styled by Samantha McMillen, was one of the few to opt for trousers with a sparkling Gucci co-ord in shades of orange and red.

14. Cate Blanchett

Cate Blanchett, who provides endless inspiration for new ways to wear trouser suits, chose a sharp, black take on the look by Givenchy for the SAG awards, completing the outfit with a crisp white shirt and chain belt. Blanchett kept the effect chicly severe with red lipstick and a sleek, straight bob.

15. Carey Mulligan

Nominated for her role in Promising Young Woman, Carey Mulligan epitomised low key elegance in a backless two-tone Prada dress which she wore with Cartier jewellery.
