15 Best Beauty and Fashion Trends Spotted at New York Fashion Week 2024

Each year we're blessed with the sight of New York Fashion Week runway shows, leaving us feeling inspired about our fall and winter 2024 wardrobe. The catwalks this year were filled with metallic colors, bows, leather jackets, and much more. We compiled the best fall and winter 2024 fashion and beauty trends vetted by New York Fashion Week, plus how you can recreate the top runway show trends in your wardrobe.

Smokey Eyes

PatBO’s makeup looks were a total smoke show on the runway, thanks to Stila Cosmetics. Find your favorite dark eyeshadow shade and blend into the crease for that smokey effect. To make this look wearable for the everyday, try a natural smokey eye look. (Think lighter brown and black colors for a natural smokey eye.)

Metallic Colors

While we love our neutrals, it's hard to resist this monochromatic metallic look that exudes glamour at the Christian Siriano runway show. The flashes of chrome make for a bold statement. To add some metallic into your style, start with accents such as metallic nails and work your way into metallic pants, dresses, tops, and more.

Bows

Voluminous Waves

The bigger the hair, the better. The Glaudi runway show portion with Art Hearts Fashion was full of luscious locks and voluminous waves. Sarah Potempa, celebrity hair stylist and co-founder of The Beachwaver Co, shared with us how she created this runway-worthy hair style.

She started by using Beachwaver Pro One-Inch Curling Iron ($115, beachwaver.com) at a 90 degree angle, rotating toward the face. Once the clamp is released, roll the curl back up and secure with a clip. For added volume, hold the curling iron horizontally near the root. After the hair is completely cooled, remove all clips and let the curls down. Potempa finished the look by spraying styling spray underneath the hair to create a dramatic lift.

Tulle Texture

When we hear the word tulle, we automatically think ballerina tutus. However, tulle can come from the ballet to the runway. This Christian Siriano dress shows you can never have too much tulle in one look. By creating shape full of tulle and texutre, this creates dimension and elegance to any going-out look.

Glass Skin

Models met the runway with glass skin, the buzz-worthy term that's all about that glow. By sticking to a makeup and skin care routine that promotes a healthy glow, glass skin can easily be recreated at home.

We learned from the pros that Kate Somerville KateCeuticals SuperCell Rejuvenation Serum ($95, katesomerville.com) was the secret to glass skin for the models at the Jason Wu runway show. “The cooling roller on the new serum was perfect to calm and soothe the models’ skin, as their skin barrier tends to get disrupted running from show to show all week,” says Susan Mastaj, Kate Somerville esthetician.

Oversized Outerwear

Pretty in pink, this oversized outerwear ensemble at the Michael Kors runway show is stunning on the catwalk and beyond. If you're looking to elevate a look from daytime to nighttime, opt for an oversized jacket. Play around with different textures or go for a full-on monochromatic look like Michael Kors.

Monochromatic Red Looks

Red is here to stay for fall and winter 2024. The Christian Cowan runway show featured a subtle yet sophisticated red silk dress. If an all-red look isn't your style, start small with red accessories and work your way up to a monochromatic red outfit.

Sleek High Pony

Greasy hair? No problem. A sleek high pony is exactly what you need for your second or third day hair. The Giannina Azar runway show with Art Hearts Fashion included this polished high pony moment on the catwalk. Pair a high-pony look with statement earrings, like the Giannina Azar runway show.

Potempa broke down this sleek high pony look at the Giannina Azar runway show. She started by sectioning off one inch of face framing pieces. Smooth and slick the rest of the hair back into a high pony and secure with elastic. Wrap a half-inch section of hair around the elastic to hide it, so the look appears more polished. To create a parted high pony look, take the face framing pieces and slick them back behind the ears under the pony tail and secure with a small elastic. For a finishing touch, apply a serum to add shine and gloss throughout the hair.

One Shoulder Necklines

A fun way to play with necklines, this one-shoulder neckline shown at the Jason Wu runway show embodies elegance and class. Change up your wardrobe by adding in the one shoulder look to your clothing pieces (think sweaters, dresses, and more).

Ruffles

This look at the Tory Burch runway show is all about the frilly ruffles. From the playful texture with the ruffles to the sheer accents, this is a dream dress for a night out.

The ruffle look can be scaled to fit the styles of a minimalist or maximalist. If you're looking for a bold statement, embrace all the ruffles. For minimalists out there, opt for two to three ruffles in your outfits for a subtle yet elegant feel.

To recreate this iconic top knot, Potempa explains you must start with a smooth high pony and secure with an elastic. Twist the hair from the ponytail and wrap around the base and secure with hair pins. Pro-tip: use hair spray and blow-dry the knot in place to keep it standing straight.

Turtleneck Necklines

The Proenza Schouler runway show stepped out with exaggerated turtleneck necklines. From sweaters to cotton long sleeves, this look could be worn straight from the catwalk to the office.

Layers on Layers

Preppy and polished, the Tommy Hilfiger runway show channeled a classic layered style. Easily recreate this look with pieces in your closet by throwing on a white button-down with a sweater on top. To finish the look, add a blazer and tuck the collar out from the white button-down for a layered look.
