Hillshire Farm Announces Recall Of Smoke Sausages Due To Potential Bone Fragments

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) made an announcement on September 2nd that sent ripples throughout the meat industry. Hillshire Farm, the St. Joseph, Missouri-based company, is recalling approximately 15,876 pounds of blended meat and poultry smoked sausage products that have the potential to be contaminated with bone fragments.

These products were produced on June 14th, 2023, and this recall serves as a reminder to all manufacturers to maintain high standards of quality control. It is crucial to note that this product comes in a 14-ounce cryovac package labeled as "Hillshire Farm Smoked Sausage Made With Pork, Turkey, Beef."

These packages have been shipped to stores and supermarkets in seven U.S. states, including California, Maryland, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

A package that might be affected would have a lot code "in the form of an establishment number, line number and time of production in hours:minutes:seconds," reading "EST. 756A 20 19:00:00 through 21:59:59 and EST. 756A 21 19:00:00 through 21:59:59." These products to look out for also have a use-by date that falls on November 11, 2023.

Upon receiving numerous reports from consumers, Hillshire promptly notified the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) about the bone fragment concerns related to their product. Along with Hillshire's own investigation, the FSIS also received a formal complaint from a consumer, solidifying the gravity of the situation.

The FSIS has recently confirmed that there has been a solitary case of an "oral injury" linked to the consumption of the products that have been affected. As of now, there have been no hospitalizations or instances of illness that have been reported, as per the organization.

Individuals who have procured any of the sausages that have been recalled are strongly urged to take immediate action by either discarding the product or returning it to the original point of purchase in order to obtain a full refund.

For customers of Hillshire Farms who may have queries pertaining to the recall, the company's dedicated customer service line can be reached at 1-855-382-3101. The FSIS also emphasizes the importance of adhering to these guidelines in order to safeguard the health and well-being of all consumers who may have been affected by this product recall.

Tyson Foods, the parent company of Hillshire Brands, has also recommended that anyone who has purchased the affected item should take immediate action by cutting the UPC and date code from the packaging and disposing of the product.

Stay safe!
