"Your hair color is amazing."

The only thing better than being asked where you get your hair colored (flattery at its finest) is the assumption that it’s natural.

"Your eyes just lit up looking at yourself in the mirror. I think this might be your perfect color!"

When it comes to hair compliments, Madison Reed master colorist Shvonne Perkins gets to dole out more than most—and she loves watching her clients respond. When she's found the perfect color for a client, she notices that their eyes light up when they see themselves in the mirror. She doesn't hesitate to point it out!

"I just automatically smile when I look at you."

It never hurts to make people feel welcome, loved, and accepted — whether they're sitting in your salon chair or the cubicle next to you at work. Perkins loves telling her clients that they make her happy—it's her way of thanking them and making them smile, too.

"You just have a sparkle right now!"

Yes, a well-chosen hair color can make someone sparkle, and Perkins has seen it happen firsthand. After coloring a client's hair, she often finds herself saying: "Your skin and eyes look so happy with this shade!" Then, she lands the biggest compliment of all, calling out a client's mega sparkle.

“You have the prettiest eyes.”

Maybe it’s the eye-opening liner tricks you’ve picked up along the way, maybe you’re a master highlighter, or maybe you were just #blessed with bright eyes, but they don’t call them the windows to our souls for nothing.

"You have the best cheekbones.”

Oh these old things? I’ve just been practicing my contouring.

“You have the longest eyelashes.”

Thanks, I was born that way. Just kidding they’re extensions/falsies/mascara, but yay!

"The most important thing for me is I only give compliments when they are 100% sincere," says Pretty Well Beauty founder Jazmin Alvarez. "I think people can tell the difference when one is being authentic and just saying things. I tell women every day that they are beautiful which seems like such a generic description—but it's how you deliver this message that resonates with people. I want to always make sure they feel it, not just hear the words. My mom always told me, it’s not what you say, it's how you say it and I’ve carried that with me my whole life."

"You are a light, and you are loved."

"I also give people affirmations that vary from person to person," says Alvarez. The ones I use most are, “ You are capable, You are a light, and you are loved."

"I'm just a reflection of you."

Instead of merely thanking folks for their compliments, Alvarez lobs their nicety right back to them. "Whenever anyone compliments me on my beauty, I tell them that what they see in me is just a reflection of their own beauty too," she shares. "I’ll say 'thanks, I’m just a reflection of you.'”

“You look amazing - did you just get back from vacation?”

Well-rested, radiant, fresh-faced, tan…it’s a pretty encompassing beauty compliment to be asked if you were on vacation, especially if, in fact, you were not.

“You have the prettiest skin. How do you get it to glow like that?”

I woke up like this! Obviously.

“Your skin is so soft and smooth.”

Ideally this one is coming from someone you know...

"I wish I had your hair.”

It’s thick, voluminous, and voluptuous – what more could you want?

“How do you do your makeup like that?”

It’s always a nice and validating feeling to be told your makeup looks pro. Sure, it’s great when your bare, no-makeup mug warrants a compliment, but when you put in effort to beautify your face and someone is actually jealous of your skills? Keep doing whatever it is that you’re doing, girl.
