Fashion has finally emerged from its pandemic cocoon, shedding knit sets and schlubby sweatpants for cocktail dresses and all-tailored-everything. But according to the biggest fall 2022 fashion trends, there's still a case for comfort dressing where our everyday coats are concerned.

Robe coats—seen on runways from Coperni to Saint Laurent to Stella McCartney—take the classic belted, wrap silhouette and amp up the cozy factor with the plushest materials: faux fur, shearling, quilted leather, and more faux fur. Versions that are more affordable but no less luxurious can be found at Apparis and Alo Yoga. Across the board, these well-insulated coats make braving the eventual fall and winter elements feel like curling up by an aprés-ski fireside.

The style's name evokes a hotel pampering, Netflix-and-hibernate mindset, but the best robe and wrap coats are meant to be seen. “We saw a number of robe coats on the fall 2022 runways that can be styled either up or down depending on the occasion,” Tiffany Hsu, fashion buying director at Mytheresa, says. When staying soft, informal, and lounge appropriate is still the imperative, Hsu recommends throwing your coat over a chunky knit and slouchy pants. Then, “for a more modern look that isn’t too dated, I would wear either a jogging or high-waisted pant with tucked-in shirt,” she suggests.
