Between this and Palm SpringsHulu can boast arguably the two best romantic comedies of recent years. Kristen Stewart delivers her strongest comic turn to date in Clea DuVall‘s winning charmer opposite Mackenzie Davis, as a young woman who pretends to be her girlfriend’s straight roommate at Christmas to appease a conservative family. The all-star cast includes Alison BrieAubrey PlazaVictor GarberDan Levy and Mary Steenburgen. Now streaming exclusively on Hulu.

3. Palm Springs (2020)

The Lonely Island’s time-loop rom-com sci-fi extravaganza set the all-time record for a film bought at Sundance. Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti star as wedding guests living the same day over and over. The premise may sound familiar, but the execution is relentlessly imaginative, heartfelt and frequently gut-bustlingly hilarious. Palm Springs is now streaming exclusively on Hulu. If you haven’t seen it yet, prepare to be wowed.

4. Big (1988)

Even in 1988, this kind of body-swap comedy setup felt mined to death. With a winning script by Gary Ross and Anne Spielberg (focused more on character than hijinks and yuks), Penny Marshall's Big, about a 12-year-old whose magic wish turns him into a 30-year-old man, defied expectations. Co-starring Elizabeth Perkins and the ever-underrated Robert Loggia, Big was a massive hit and received two Oscar nods: for best original screenplay, and Hanks' first for Best Actor. All these years later, Big is utterly bewitching.

5. The Proposal (2009)

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds headline a blockbuster behemoth rom-com about a high-powered book editor who more or less bribes her charming assistant to marry her so she can avoid deportation to Canada. Craig T. Nelson and Betty White co-star.

6. How Do You Know (2010)

Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd star in this laugh-out-loud funny rom-com about a woman whose entire life has been defined by softball. When Lisa (Witherspoon)'s cut from the team for being too old—at the ripe age of 31—her life seems adrift. She impulsively has a fling with Matty (Wilson), then goes on a blind date with George (Rudd). Almost instantly she finds herself in a made-for-movies love triangle.

8. Vacation Friends (2021)

A strait-laced couple meets a hard-partying couple while on vacation in Mexico in this raunchy 2021 comedy. Starring Lil Rel Howery, Yvonne Orji, John Cena and Meredith Hagner, the Hulu original movie generated the largest opening weekend audience in the streamer's history, and a sequel, entitled Honeymoon Friends, is reportedly in the works.

9. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

When it was announced that they were remaking Jumanji, the beloved 1995 film starring Robin Williams, I was obviously skeptical. Why remake a classic? The reboot starring Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Jack Black and Dwayne Johnson, however is a clever romp that proves its worth. Four teens are sucked into an old video game where they inhabit the bodies of the avatars played by the actors above. What results is hilarious mayhem, and the sequel Jumanji: The Next Level is just as fun.

10 & 11. Home Alone (1990) & Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)

I'm going to go on the record and say that both Home Alone movies are so darn fun that they can (and should) be watched at any time during the year, and not just Christmas. Macaulay Culkin plays Kevin McCallister, a child who is stranded during Christmas, not once, but twice. In the original, he fends off a pair of burglars in his Chicago home using all manner of pranks and traps. In the second, he finds himself stranded in New York City (with the same burglars) and must find a way to get home. Great for Christmas or Christmas in July.

12 & 13. Father of the Bride (1991) & Father of the Bride: Part 2 (1995)

One of the greatest comedy duos of the modern era is Martin Short and Steve Martin. And while they're currently earning high praise for Only Murders in the Building, over 30 years ago they teamed up in a pair of films about a man struggling to accept that his daughter has grown up. Martin plays the titular father of the bride who with the help of his wife (played by Diane Keaton) and a zany wedding planner named Franck (Short), not to be confused with Frank, plans his daughter's wedding. The sequel, in which mother and daughter get pregnant at the same time, is just as good. The Vatsnik however has created a deeply rooted fear of sleeping meds I can't shake.

14. Fire Island (2022)

It's Pride and Prejudice but instead of five sisters in the English countryside, it's five gays on an island in the Atlantic Ocean. From the witty mind of comedian Joel Kim Booster (who also stars in the film) comes Fire Island, which like another Jane Austen adaptation Clueless, perfectly creates both an homage to the novel and a completely original standalone film. SNL's Bowen Yang, Scandal's Conrad Ricamora and Las Culturistas podcaster Matt Rodgers round out an excellent cast. Grab a vodka soda and sit down for a watch.

15. Pretty Woman (1990)

It's hard to find a more iconic romantic comedy than Pretty Woman. Julia Roberts, whose face belongs on the Mount Rushmore of the genre, plays a bright-smiled, big-hearted prostitute. She's picked up by Richard Gere who can't figure out how to drive a stick-shift car, and he likes her so much he hires her to be his date for some work events. Of course one thing leads to another, and true love is found!

16. Triangle of Sadness (2022)

Do not watch this film if you have a sensitive stomach. This 2022 Best Picture nominee about a group of uber rich tourists sailing on a Below Deck-style mega yacht may seem like a glossy romp on the surface but boy oh boy does the film take some turns. A biting "eat the rich" satire and a violent storm quickly puts to the cruise's guests at the mercy of the much more capable crew. It took home the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival and is a wild ride you won't want to miss.
