There was a time when anime was a niche interest that way too few people truly appreciated. When streaming links were hard to come by, and English-subtitled shows were few and far between. But I'm glad to say that it is now the year 2024 and those days are looooong gone. Anime is more than alive and well. It's thriving! And this year is another great one for watching some of the best on-screen storytelling from talented Japanese artists, writers, and producers.

Whether you're an anime newbie, or a certified otaku who is absolutely obsessed—we've got you covered. The 2024 lineup includes everything from other-worldly fantasy and sci-fi, to healing and relatable slice-of-life shows, and everything else in between (including a whole new era of Pokémon). There are so many highly-anticipated releases this year, but we've managed to narrow down the roster to our favorites. Here are all of our top picks.

A Sign of Affection

Ah, yes! There's nothing like a heartfelt, beautifully-made, romance anime. This story revolves around college student Yuki Itose. She deals with all the problems all other people in her school deal with, and she also happens to be deaf. One day, while struggling on her commute, charming upperclassman Itsuomi Nagi helps her out. This meet-cute is the beginning of a pure and wonderful love story.

Delicious in Dungeon

This epic Dungeons and Dragons-esque adventure anime is truly a feast for the eyes. In this gaming world, it's literally eat or be eaten. Laios led his party on a quest to slay a dragon. But due to their empty stomachs, they failed and his sister Falin ended up being swallowed by the creature. And so as they try embark on a mission to return to the dungeon level with the dragon in time to save Falin from digestion, they make sure that they are well-fed. So expect to see a lot of delicious food.

Mr. Villain's Day Off

The General is a leader of an evil syndicate that plans to take over the world. His 9-to-5 involves villainous schemes, and fighting the Earth's protectors, the Rangers. But in this anime, we follow him on his day off. Just like any of us, he loves to spend his free time doing healing activities like going to the zoo to see the pandas or eating ice cream.
