THERE'S A LOT to like about Gen V, the very first live-action spinoff and major expansion to the vulgar, violent. darkly hilarious world of The Boys. First and foremost, it's a compelling show with characters that we almost immediately are drawn to; Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair) and Emma Meyer (Lizze Broadway) make for a great pair of protagonists, and wild card characters like Luke/Golden Boy (Patrick Schwarzenegger) and Sam (Asa Germann) help to create a story filled with great tension and even some mystery.

Also like The Boys, Gen V gives us lots of moments that are hilarious, shocking, and everything in between. Have you ever seen a penis explode? Well, you have now! Have you ever seen a puppet sex scene? Well, if you've seen Avenue Q then probably yes. But Gen V made it happen on Prime Video nonetheless.

As Gen V wraps up its freshman year, we know you may be looking for the next show to fill that soon-to-be-vacant place in your heart. Luckily, this is a space where we have quite a bit of expertise; the vulgar, the violent, the outrageous, and the compelling are things that we're always looking for in TV. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

We think if you've been having a good time with Gen V, you'll have a whole lot of fun with all the shows on the following list. And since we know you're a Gen V fan, we're assuming you're all good with lots of guts, gore, and sex. Because that's going to show up in these shows. Here we go!

The Boys (2019 - )

This one is obvious. If for some reason you watched Gen V without seeing The Boys, the vulgar, action-packed, wildly-compelling superhero satire that it's spun off from, you'll need to change that right away.

The Boys: Diabolical (2022)

Perhaps a bit more of a deep cut—while Gen V is the first live-action spinoff of The Boys, it's not the first spinoff broadly. That honor instead goes to The Boys: Diabolical, a series of animated shorts taking place in The Boys universe that came out back in 2022. Very fun, very vulgar and violent (of course), and like a slice of life from all different avenues of the ever-expanding The Boys world.

Invincible (2021 - )

Based on a beloved comic book series and sporting one of the best voice casts you'll ever find, Invincible was a sensation when it debuted its first season back in 2021. The show isn't quite as satirical or outrageous as The Boys or Gen V, but it's a subversion on the superhero genre (and a super violent one at that!) nonetheless. The show is expected to run for many seasons, and so far there's only been one (with Season 2 right around the corner). Now's your chance to get in on the ground floor.

Peacemaker (2022 - )

Peacemaker is technically set in the DC Universe—it's helmed by The Suicide Squad director and current DC co-CEO James Gunn—but as long as you have somewhat of an idea who Batman or Aquaman are, you'll be OK going into this one blind. Peacemaker, starring John Cena as the titular character, is one of the best superhero shows of recent years, softening a brutal and hilarious character who made his debut in The Suicide Squad (also worth checking out for fans of Gen V). This show has all the violence and vulgarity that Gen V does—with a little bit of a sci-fi twist and a lot of heart added in for good measure.

Preacher (2016 - 2019)

Before Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg—who produce both The Boys and Gen V—took their hand at adapting The Boys to the small screen, they brought another Garth Ennis-penned comic to the screen with the deeply-weird (and, you guessed it, very violent) Preacher. This battle between good and evil is very much not what you will expect at any point—and will have you saying WTF? multiple times per episode.

Happy! (2017-2019)

Based on the legendary writer Grant Morrison's graphic novel of the same name, Happy! is the story of an alcoholic former cop-turned-assassin (Christopher Meloni) who wakes up to find that his daughter has been kidnapped—and suddenly he's sharing space with a flying unicorn that only he can see (voiced by Patton Oswalt).

The Umbrella Academy (2019 - )

If you like the "young superpowered people learning their place in the world" aspect of Gen V, then look no further than Netflix's The Umbrella Academy, based on My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way's graphic novel series of the same name. The Umbrella Academy is weird, compelling, and full of some really fun music choices. Not nearly as violent or vulgar as Gen V or The Boys, but with some similar DNA regardless.Think X-Men on an edible or two.

Deadly Class (2019)

Based on Rick Remender's acclaimed graphic novel series of the same name, Deadly Class lasted only a single season but it was a great time. Kind of a cross between X-Men and John Wick (and set in the '80s), Deadly Class is the story of a school where students learn to be.. well, deadly, and all kinds of teenage drama and violent conflict comes up along the way. The cast is led by Benedict Wong and Lana Condor.

Legion (2017-2019)

We tried to generally avoid Marvel shows on this list, because that's a whole separate wormhole that you could fall down. But the one exception we're making is for Legion, a deeply eccentric and always trippy thriller that bounces between darkly comedic and borderline horror. From Fargo creator Noah Hawley, this is one of the best shows you'll watch, period—and the pilot will have you hooked from the get-go. The outstanding cast includes Dan Stevens, Aubrey Plaza, Jean Smart, Hamish Linklater, and Jemaine Clement, among others.

Ash vs Evil Dead (2015 - 2018)

Ash Vvs. Evil Dead doesn't have any superhero connection at all. But if you're looking for something that's very gory and very funny, then you could do a whole lot worse than this TV continuation of Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi's famous Evil Dead franchise.

Clone High (2002, 2023)

Clone High might be the closest show overall on this list to Gen V, which is strange, considering there's zero action or drama in Clone High at all. This show, though, is about scientifically-cloned historical figures—including Abe Lincoln, Gandhi, Joan of Ark, and John F. Kennedy—who reach their adolescence at the same time at the same high school. The show went largely unnoticed when it debuted in 2002, but it became such a cult classic over the following two decades that creators Chris Miller and Phil Lord (21 Jump Street, the Spider-Verse movies) brought it back for a rebooted second season in 2023.

Harley Quinn (2019 - present)

The Harley Quinn animated series, which has been running since 2019 and features the voice of Kaley Cuoco as the titular troublemaker, is one of the best things DC has produced in the last 15 years. The show is just about everything we've ever wanted it to be: it's funny, it's full of violence and great storylines, and, perhaps most importantly, it doesn't take itself too seriously, while still being true to all your favorite Batman/DC characters. The show is a blast, plain and simple.

Misfits (2009 - 2013)

Familiar faces Iwan Rheon (Game of Thrones) and Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy) are among the cast in Misfits, a series that originally aired on British network E4. The show is about a group of teenagers who.... get superpowers after getting caught in a strange electrical storm while doing community service. Fun! Think of this like Skins meets Gen V. A fun time!
