13 Statement Sunglasses That Will Get You All the Compliments

Time to take stock of summer sunglasses. Let’s see: aviators, check. Retro round sunnies, got them. Wayfarers, of course. Those eternally timeless Norma Kamali–esque cat eyes? Yep. What I did not have was a glittery hot pink pair until my friend pointed them out to me at the Gucci display case about a month ago. We both left with crazy sparkly sunglasses that day, and while it’s a purchase that’s impulsive, impractical, trendy—a splurge that any well-meaning, rational person would advise against—I have zero regrets. Because for someone who very rarely takes a very out-there fashion risk, whose everyday outfits all share a degree of uniformity, these sunglasses broadcast to the world that I’m a fun(!), happy(!), outgoing human!

Strangers on the subway ask me about them, sales associates in stores pay them compliments, random passersby do double takes. These sunglasses deliver an instant dose of interest even when I’m wearing the most boring outfit. And they embody a certain nostalgic charm too, which I find irresistible. (My boyfriend likens them to a pair of jelly sandals, which is not a completely inaccurate description. Plus, I swear I probably had a similar version, albeit a plastic nondesigner one, as a toddler.) Anyway. Long story short, I’m all about the statement sunglasses, and so I rounded up a few of my favorites for you.
