This article contains major spoilers for the ending of 13 Reasons Why season 4.

We’ve all been watching 13 Reasons Why for long enough to know that the final season wasn’t super likely to have a happy ending. The kids of Liberty High have been trauma magnets ever since season 1 kicked off with Hannah Baker’s suicide, and as Clay, Jessica, Tony, and the gang approached their high school graduation in season 4, it was hard to shake the feeling that something bad was coming. And boy, was it.

The season opened by teasing the death of an as-yet-unidentified student, and in the finale, the ill-fated character was confirmed to be a fan favorite. Right after showing up at prom for a swoon-worthy reunion dance with his on-off soul mate Jessica, Justin Foley (Brandon Flynn) suddenly collapsed. Fans had been predicting ahead of this season that Justin—who’s struggled with drug addiction—might overdose. Instead, in an unimaginably tragic twist, Justin was revealed to have HIV that had progressed to AIDS, with a lung and brain infection so severe that he couldn’t be saved. Cue several devastating scenes as Clay, Jessica, and the rest of Justin’s loved ones said their goodbyes.

Unsurprisingly, fans had a lot of very strong feelings about this brutal ending for a beloved character and took to Twitter to share their reactions. Here are a few of the best tweets that sum up how the 13RW fandom is feeling.

Okay, yeah, so! I think that about says it all. If you need the 13RW fans, they’ll be sobbing into their pillows for the foreseeable future.
