The 13 Most Jaw-Dropping Looks from Jonathan Simkhai Spring 2017

Crisp, clean whites, smooth ivories, and chambray blues: Perhaps not the most revolutionary palette for a spring collection, but impossible to deny when presented in a fresh, artful, and elegant way. Such was the case for designer (and red carpet favorite) Jonathan Simkhai’s Spring 2017 effort.

Inspired by Los Angeles’s sculptural Watts Towers, the collection was made gritty by a generous helping of embellishments — heavy beading shivered and shimmied from hemlines, adorning everything from jackets to wide-legged pants. But there was also a very floaty, feminine aspect to the pieces, with no shortage of shredded chiffon ruffles and eyelet detailing — which revealed peeks of flesh as they curled around pants, dresses, blouses, and camisoles.

Unsurprisingly, Simkhai — one of three 2015 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winners — had a slew of stylish stars crowding his front row. A newly platinum, denim-clad Kylie Jenner perched next to model pal Jordyn Woods, along with the likes of Ashley Graham, Olivia Palermo, Hailey Clauson, Olivia Culpo, Jamie Chung, and more. The scene was as busy as you might expect for a buzzy New York fashion week show on a Saturday evening, but it certainly wasn’t the kind of overwhelming, zoo-like atmosphere that generally occurs when a Kardashian/Jenner is in the room — which, frankly, was a welcomed relief.
