This $13 Million Dublin Estate Offers Historic Elegance in a Relaxed Coastal Setting

A popular seaside resort destination for Dubliners since the late 18th century, the affluent coastal suburb of Killiney lies along a particularly scenic stretch of coastline, about 14 kilometers south of the city’s center. Its more notable residents include the late George Bernard Shaw and a couple of members of U2 (Bono and the Edge), as well as the ethereal singer Enya, who, back in 1997, reportedly outbid Michael “Lord of the Dance” Flatley for a 19th-century castellated mansion.

Situated on a high point of land between the 9-hole Killiney Golf Club and the long crescent of rocky shoreline that is Killiney Bay Beach, a 2.8-acre estate known as Kenah Hill has come to market for just about $13 million. Stephen Day and Rory Kirwan of Lisney Sotheby’s International Realty.

The foyer showcases a black-and-white checkerboard marble floor and a sweeping wrought-iron staircase.

Nipped down a leafy lane and sequestered behind stone walls, security gates, and mature greenery, the property offers an elegantly appointed 19th-century mansion of nearly 10,000 square feet set amid mature gardens, plus an indoor pool and an artificial grass tennis court.

The stately three-story residence sits at the end of a gravel driveway with eight bedrooms and seven bathrooms. Beyond the foyer, with its grand black-and-white checkerboard marble floor and sweeping wrought-iron staircase, there’s a cozy fireside sitting room wrapped in red damask wallcoverings, a baronial drawing room with parquet de Versailles flooring, and a formal dining room embellished with delicate floral murals. Elsewhere, there’s a home office and an up-to-date eat-in kitchen that spills out to a sunny terrace for alfresco dining.

The mosaic-tile pool is housed in a greenhouse-like structure above the tennis court.

Six of the bedrooms, at least three of them with a fireplace, along with four bathrooms, are located on the upper level. The primary suite, with two bay windows and a spacious dressing room with bespoke built-ins, shares a Jack-and-Jill bath with another large bedroom with views over the sea. There are two additional ensuite bedrooms on the garden level, one of them with an attached sitting room, plus a large games room, a secondary kitchen, and a wine cellar.

Beyond the elevated terrace outside the kitchen, the grounds offer tree-shaded lawns, meandering paths, and mature gardens. On a lower terrace, a greenhouse-like structure houses a mosaic-tile swimming pool. A lounge area and bar facilitate relaxed entertaining, while the nearby tennis court’s artificial grass allows it to be used all year round.

Kenah Hill is about a half-hour drive from the center of Dublin and less than a mile from Fred & Nancy’s seaside cafe, where visitors to the Killiney Strand can pick up some coffee and casual vittles from a customized Airstream trailer.
