Whether you’re furnishing a large backyard or a small balcony, the right outdoor furniture can help you take full advantage of your space. Great patio furniture is functional and comfortable and can transform your outdoor space from humdrum into a relaxing oasis. Cue the need for weather-resistant, durable, and attractive furniture that will look stylish and stand up to the elements.

That’s where teak wood furniture comes in. Teak outdoor furniture can be expensive, but it’s one of the most durable hardwoods available. Not only is it weather-resistant, but it’s low maintenance and will last for years. Besides where the teak comes from, you can also learn a lot about the age, quality, appearance, and durability of a piece of teak by looking at its grade. “Grade A teak tends to be smooth with very few surface defects or knots,” Chris Putrimas, CEO of Teak Warehouse, says, adding, “Grade B and C teak tend to have more defects and more sapwood, which indicated younger teak is used.”

From benches to outdoor dining sets and sofas, we researched and found the best teak options to fit your space.

What We Like

  • Available in two finishes

  • Expandable to fit up to 10 people

  • Hand-crafted

What We Don’t Like

Transform your dinner party into an outdoor affair with an expandable dining table that exudes elegance. This table is crafted by hand from high-quality teak and is spacious enough to accommodate six adults when closed and up to 10 when extended. To reveal the built-in butterfly extension, simply pull the sides of the table, which are hidden beneath the slatted surface. Over time, the teak wood will develop a lovely silver-gray patina, but it's important to note that if you don't frequently use the extension, it will patina at a different rate, resulting in a different color than the tabletop. Additionally, the table has been expertly sanded by hand, ensuring that it has a smooth and refined appearance.

The teak has been kiln-dried, which eliminates expansion and shrinkage, and the stainless-steel hardware is heat- and cold-resistant, so it will hold up under a variety of weather conditions. This table also comes in two colorways — natural and weathered — so it should fit in with nearly every style. While this table carries a hefty price tag for a single piece of furniture, its versatility and durability may be worth the cost. Some assembly is required, but it’s extremely easy to put together.

Grade A unfinished teak allows the color and grain to shine, and as the piece ages, a silvery patina will emerge. The wood is kiln-dried to prevent warping, splitting, and cracking, and the mortise-and-tenon construction provides durability and strength.

One thing to note is that the sofa doesn’t come with a cushion, but you can purchase one separately in one of 35 available colors and patterns in three high-performance, weather-resistant fabric options. And although this is sold as an outdoor sofa, the manufacturer recommends storing it indoors out of season. Care is easy, too. A mild solution of soap and water will clean most dirt and messes.

Our top choice for teak outdoor furniture is the Cambridge Casual Mosko 3-Piece Teak Patio Bar Height Set. Not only is this patio set visually appealing, but its design and sturdy construction with teak wood ensure long-lasting and dependable usage. If you’re looking for a statement piece, check out the Elizabeth Teak 3-Seater Outdoor Bench. What to Look For

Wood Grade

Teak commands a premium price because of its natural properties. Its tight grain, high oil content, and strength give teak its weather resistance, making it one of the most durable woods in the world. Teak is classified by the region it’s grown in and its grade. Knowing whether the teak is Grade A, Grade B, or Grade C can tell you about the age, quality, look, and durability of the wood you’re buying.

When buying outdoor furniture, you will want something that will last a long time and handle the climate and weather changes you live in. Grade A teak is the most expensive teak wood, but it’s also the most weather-resistant and will last a long time. The Tortuga Jakarta rocking chair is made of Grade A Indonesian teak hardwood that is sustainably grown.

Construction

Construction is key when it comes to outdoor teak furniture. “Quality teak furniture is made with mortise-and-tenon construction,” says Chris Putrimas, CEO of Teak Warehouse. In simple terms, the tenon portion of the joint works as a peg, and the mortise is the slot into which the tenon is inserted. “Joinery is very important, and any gaps in the joint are a red flag,” he continues. Wood-to-wood joints are milled accurately and locked, allowing joints to expand and contract equally without loosening the connections. “When purchasing high-end teak furniture, it’s ideal to buy fully assembled furniture,” he recommends. The Elizabeth Teak 3-Seater Outdoor Bench is delivered fully assembled, allowing you to use it right away without any additional setup.

Weather Resistance

When it comes to weather resistance, teak wood is one of the best materials for outdoor furniture. Teak wood’s oils are one of the material’s defining characteristics, and it’s these oils that help it resist warping, cracking, and rotting, which helps it repel water and protect against damage from moisture. “Teak doesn’t absorb water because it’s not porous,” says Putrimas. The natural oils also contribute to teak’s anti-fungal properties, protecting against fungus, mold, mildew, and even insects.

Style and Design

Whether you’re looking for something traditional or prefer a more modern design, there are plenty of styles to suit your preferences. Teak wood offers a beautiful honey-hued finish that warms any space, and more traditional designs offer clean and elegant lines. If you prefer a modern touch, you can find sleek, linear pieces with minimal aesthetics. “Skinny teak is coming back now that mid-century modern design has made such a strong comeback,” says Putrimas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will teak last outside?

With regular cleaning and maintenance, teak will last outdoors for a lifetime. Putrimas says there’s no need to bring it indoors to protect it. He suggests keeping it clean so dirt doesn’t absorb into the top level of the grain. Don’t use harsh cleaning solutions; a simple mixture of dish soap and warm water is effective. As the wood ages, you can apply a teak sealant to keep the wood’s natural oils from depleting, and if you want to cover your furniture, Putrimas recommends only using breathable covers made of solution-dyed polyester.

Is teak wood eco-friendly?

Because of teak’s popularity, it’s been over-harvested in some countries. To ensure the quality of the wood, and the sustainability of production, look for products that are FSC-certified, which means it comes from a responsibly managed forest that provides environmental, social and economic benefits to the region it’s grown in.

How do you determine the grade of teak?

Not all teak is created equally. Teak has three grades: A, B, and C, which are determined by what part of the tree the wood comes from. Grade A comes from the center of the log, called heartwood; it’s free from knots, sap, and cracks, and has a tight, straight grain. It also maintains a consistent honey hue with a glossy sheen from the high oil content. Grade B teak refers to timber cut from the outer part of the heartwood, and it has a lighter color, uneven grain, and less shine (due to a lower oil concentration). Grades C and D typically come from the outer core and tend to be more of a reddish-brown color. Because they have fewer natural oils in them, they are fine for indoor furniture but aren’t generally recommended for outdoor furniture.

What is an alternative to teak wood?

If teak is out of your budget, acacia wood is a good alternative. “It’s rot-, water- and insect-resistant, and it also shares a similar color but is not as rich and golden as teak,” says Putrimas.

Greenheart lumber earns high marks and ranks second behind teak in terms of resistance to water and insects, and it’s extremely durable, making it a good alternative to teak. It has a fine to medium grain with a pale olive green color and a natural luster. However, when it’s being harvested, it has a tendency to split apart quickly, and with such force that it can be dangerous to mill workers.

Why Trust The Spruce?

Maureen Farrar is a contributing writer who covers home and garden design for The Spruce. To learn about teak outdoor furniture, Farrar spoke with Chris Putrimas, CEO of Teak Warehouse in Southern California. Maureen narrowed her selections based on price, dimensions, construction, and materials while aiming to include a wide range of styles.
