120 dogs in West Memphis shelter need homes

WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. — The West Memphis Animal Services has taken in well over 100 dogs in less than two weeks after rescuing animals from two separate hoarding situations one week apart.

Puppy eyes and doggie kisses are just about the only things keeping Kerry Facello and her team at West Memphis Animal Services going.

“It’s certainly greater than anything we’ve ever encountered,” Facello said.

She says the shelter was already at double capacity before taking in 75 dogs from a hoarding situation on May 14, only to be faced with a second hoarding incident on Tuesday.

This has left them to care for 120 dogs that need to be fed, medically cared for, and housed.

“To say it was startling is an understatement, but then to stand there and try to calculate where you’re going to put everybody and how you’re going to manage it,” Facello said.

Without the help of the public, they probably couldn’t have. But through donations of food, treats, crates, and money, Facello says they will soon be out of the dog house.

“A lot has kind of renewed our faith in humanity,” Facello said. “We’ve never had this outpouring of—it will take us forever to put away all the gifts that we have received and the support we’ve received.”

Their biggest need right now is for people to foster to get the animals away from the stress of the kennel. She’s confident that very soon every dog will have its day.

“We’re looking to show some success stories and at-home pictures where the dogs are good and comfortable,” Facello said.

Three people have been arrested in the first hoarding case, and another person could face charges in the second.

The dogs will be up for adoption soon, so if you would like to bring one home, or help foster, visit the West Memphis Animal Shelter website.
