12 Valentine's Day Horror Stories That Remind Me Why I'm Happy To Be Single

In honor of Valentine's Day, I asked the BuzzFeed Community to share their worst memories from the holiday. Let's just say that these stories do not disappoint. Here are some of them.

1."About a decade ago, I had booked a week of work off far in advance over Valentine's Day week, which happened to include my first anniversary with my boyfriend. He was a student and I was working, so I had planned to pay for this really awesome ski trip to another city a few hours away. As the time got closer, we were both getting excited about the trip. That is, until his guy friends invited him on a guys trip to Florida last minute. They weren't even his close friends! But he decided to go a day before our scheduled trip."

"Thankfully, I got all my money back from reservations and was able to get a few shifts at work that week. If it wasn't for having booked a week off and it being Valentine's Day and our first anniversary at the same time, I wouldn't have cared about just rescheduling the trip. We broke up shortly after. However, I should have seen it coming because this is a guy who also bailed on my stepsister's wedding a few months into our relationship. All these years later, I'm still mad at this ex for bailing!"

2."I used to do a Galentine's Day dinner every year with my bestie and another coworker because we were either single or their boyfriends were trash. The coworker got married, so she was out. My bestie had a boyfriend, so I told her to enjoy Valentine's Day with him."

"She insisted we keep our tradition and booked a fancy steak restaurant. The day of, the boyfriend wanted to do dinner with her. Again, I bowed out and told them to enjoy themselves. She said no, he wanted to spend dinner with both of us. The restaurant couldn't accommodate an extra person, so he said he wanted to make us a steak dinner. Again, kinda weird but they insisted, so I gave in. Two hours later, his brother also decided he wanted steak, so he decided to join us. Again, tried to bow out because now they could just do a couples date.

"They insisted that I still come. On the way to the brother's house, bestie casually mentioned his sister and her husband also wanted to join, so now I went from being a third wheel to a fifth and seventh wheel (and I had never met four of them). #GoodTimes... It ended up not being terrible, but the steak would definitely have been better at the restaurant, LOL."

3."Last year for Valentine's Day, my boyfriend at the time (ex now) got me some candy in a bag and nothing else as a gift. He even told me, 'Sorry I ate some of the candy,' then had the audacity to ask me if he could have the rest of my candy."

4."One Valentine's Day, my old boyfriend took me on a date. Afterward, he broke up with me, saying his parents were making him do it because they didn't know me. I met them three weeks ago, and he said he told them about our dating two months ago. I cried at home, and then he took me on another date and ended it by telling me we weren't back together and he only did it because he felt bad for me."

I Will Be Alone Forever

5."My high school boyfriend cheated on me right before Valentine's Day, and not wanting to spend the day alone, I went on a date with an ex. We had a good time, but when he was dropping me off, we realized we were being followed by the police. They pulled him over right in front of my house. My dad was waiting for me and saw the whole thing. Apparently, earlier in the day, my date cut the cop off in his super-loud, very identifiable Monte Carlo. My date tried to give me a kiss good night in front of my dad and the very upset officer. We stopped talking shortly afterward, per Dad's request."

6."One time, this guy I'd been talking to asked me out. It started off nicely, as I went to his house and he was being pleasant. Then his mom came downstairs (we were in high school) and asked him if he wanted anything to eat — not me, just him. He asked if she could bring something down. So she brought him down something to eat but nothing for me, and then he proceeded to bring it back upstairs five minutes later because he 'wasn’t hungry.' This whole thing was strange, but then he asked me to go to McDonald’s with him. I said yes because I was hungry."

"Then he smoked before we went into his bathroom without telling me. We went, and he said he only had $3, so I basically paid for our food. He also ordered three times as much food as I did and expected me to pay for it."

7."We were together for nearly 20 years on and off, with a rocky history, and lived an hour away from each other. Truth be told, our relationship was done, and neither of us wanted to admit it. After two weeks of us not speaking to each other, he agreed to give me 'the opportunity' of seeing him on Valentine’s Day."

8."Once, my boyfriend surprised me on Valentine's by having a romantic dinner...with his mom. Then, as a gift, he gave me an unwrapped wooden duck with dust on it, which he had obviously just grabbed off a shelf at his parents'. He was 26 years old, by the way."

9."I was in ninth grade. I was absolutely enamored by the idea of a secret admirer. During a group project, I and my other single group members talked about what our perfect Valentine's Day would be. Mine, of course, was having a secret admirer. When Valentine's Day rolled around, I got one of those single roses delivered to me in every class that day — all from my secret admirer. I was ecstatic to think it was real, but I figured it was one of my group members being nice. By the end of the day, I got to that class and told my group. It wasn't any of them. I gushed about it all class, thinking someone liked me! Then I heard another group of older kids laughing — they had sent me each rose as a joke. I tossed the roses and cried the whole rest of the day. I haven't cared for Valentine's Day since then."

10."This was over 20 years ago, before texts were really a thing. Our phone landlines allowed us to send voicemails to each other without actually calling, so often I'd wake up to a voicemail from him that he'd left during the night. On Valentine's Day, I woke up to a message from him saying that he thought we shouldn't see each other again. He literally broke up with me over voicemail on Valentine's Day. I spent the day in a blur, and then I was at the station waiting for my train, surrounded by people carrying flowers and gifts, and I cried the whole ride home. What's funny is that we bumped into each other again after I got married, and he totally admitted to being a jerk, and we've been on good terms since."

11."It was my second Valentine’s Day with my first serious boyfriend. I had always wanted a nice candlelit steak dinner, so he got steak and I cooked it. I spent all day cooking and cleaning and doing everything while he was at work, and then when he got home, we had a nice dinner together. However, I was very tired after all of that and wanted to cuddle. We climbed into bed, and both of us accidentally fell asleep. I woke up after some time to the smell of burning and looked to see that the candles on the table had fallen over and the tablecloth was on fire! I jumped up and put it out, but the plastic tablecloth was melted into the table and there was a huge burn mark. The table still has a big scorch, and we were cleaning ash off of everything for months."
