We know you have a spring jacket (or a few) in your closet, and chances they’re in stellar condition, ready for another seasonal rotation. That said, if you need a refresh, a number of new (and revisited) spring jacket trends are emerging in 2024 alongside fresh takes on denim, sneakers, and other staples. “This spring, it’s less of the super oversized, power shoulders, and embellishments from the past couple of years and more of a mix of ‘borrowing from the guys’ (workwear, leather, bomber, trench) and super-feminine details (quilted, bouclé, prints, cropped silhouettes, and defined waistlines),” explains New York-based fashion stylist Audree Kate López. It's clear that this year's trends contain multitudes, leaving lots to be excited about for both shopping and styling them. Intrigued? Keep scrolling for 12 spring jacket trends that are bound to be everywhere in the next few months.

Boxy Leather Jackets

Leather jackets—like denim jackets—never go out of style. “Leather jackets are timeless—they’re a wardrobe staple that can pretty much go with everything, and this year we’ve seen a refresh to the go-to outerwear piece,” López says. “The leather jacket is moving away from the moto jacket with pockets, off-center zippers, belts, and lots of embellishments. The new leather jacket is more ‘90s, early 2000s with the classic boxy silhouette, simple collar, and minimalist design.” Two jackets that perfectly encapsulate this style upgrade are the Lamarque Theia Jacket ($695) and the Edikted Mori Oversize Faux Leather Jacket ($119).

Styling Tip: According to López, the updated leather jacket is an androgynous silhouette that can fit any style, and it pairs beautifully with both traditionally masculine and feminine garments and accessories.

Bomber Silhouettes

The bomber jacket remains a must-have outerwear silhouette for spring 2024. “The cropped silhouette and cinched waist is easy to pair with the trendier looser pants and skirts,” López says, noting that this year’s iteration is boxier than bombers of the past few years. The Alpha Industries L-2b Cropped Flight Jacket ($180) is a great pick, available in green, black, and camo. For a dressier take on the trend, consider the Open Edit Satin Bomber Jacket ($90). Meanwhile, if a vintage-inspired varsity moment is your goal, Awet's Biniam Letterman Jacket ($550) is a standout.

Styling Tip: “The bomber jacket trend is one of my favorites,” exclaims Shopbop Fashion Director, Caroline Maguire. “It’s the perfect jacket to throw on to dress your outfit up or down depending on where you’re going. I love pairing this style jacket with a bubble-shaped skirt to mix up the look.”

Bouclé Jackets

Sofia Richie Grainge popularized quiet luxury and the old money aesthetic in 2023, and the trend is continuing in 2024. “We’re still seeing the bouclé jacket reign supreme, but it’s no longer in the super preppy way with the matching skirt,” López says. Now, trendsetters are styling it against jeans, plain white t-shirts, graphic tees, and layered accessories. “It’s ‘old money’ meets new fashion girl money,” López says. To rock the textured jacket trend this spring, consider adding the Abercrombie & Fitch Collarless Tweed Jacket ($140), Maeve Tweed Cropped Blazer ($148), Anine Bing Cara Jacket ($450), or ba&sh Meredith Jacket ($395) to your wardrobe.

If you like the look of bouclé but are hoping for something a bit more durable, Maguire says to opt for tweed, which is made of wool and typically sturdier. “A tweed jacket is the perfect transitional piece for spring,” Mshe says.

Styling Tip: “I love all of the tailored fabrications this style of jacket comes in,” Maguire says. “I recommend styling a jacket like this with a graphic tee and slouchy boyfriend jeans for the perfect comfy, chic look.”

Prints Galore

Surely, you’ve heard about the mob wife aesthetic—the Sopranos-inspired fashion trend that champions leopard print and bold style. While the trend’s name has been at the center of debate, the aesthetic is undeniably proving that the statement jacket is having a moment in 2024.

“Although there has been a neutral push the past couple of years with the clean girl aesthetic, old money aesthetic, workwear, minimalism, and the new ‘norm-core’, our maximalists can take a sigh of relief because the statement jacket is not going anywhere,” López says. She notes that bright colors and prints (including animal, florals, geometric designs, and so on) are a must this spring.

Looking for some seriously bold printed jackets? A few of our faves include the FP Movement Hit The Slopes Printed Fleece Jacket ($168), Porridge Neomie Polka Dot Trench Coat ($168), Autumn Adeigbo Makenna Duster ($795), and Barbour x Ganni Printed Bomber ($675).

Styling Tip: “Printed coats can really pull together an entire look from basic to street-style star,” López says. “I love the idea of having a statement jacket in your arsenal because even if you’re wearing sweats or jeans and a tee, this jacket will carry the entire outfit without wasting any time getting dressed.”

The Cropped Trench

Trench coats are a spring staple, and this year, López says to expect significantly shorter silhouettes, like the Undra Celeste Will Trench Vest ($495) and Free People x Revolve Looking Glass Trench Coat ($95). “This spring, you can expect to see the cropped version—it’s a great option if the traditional trench is too overwhelming for your frame or you want something lightweight to toss on,” she says. “The cropped trench will be like the denim jacket and leather jacket were in the 2010s—a classic go-to.”

Styling Tip: To balance out the cropped trench style, consider wearing it with high-waisted bottoms, whether that entails jeans, trousers, or a skirt.

Colorful Trench Coats

Khaki trenches are classic and thus always in style, but this year, unexpectedly colorful trenches like the Nasty Gal Longline Vinyl Trench Coat ($64) and Isabel Marant Edenna Trench Coat ($1670) are, too. “The classic khaki trench coat infiltrated all of our closets the past couple of years and now we’re taking a step outside of the neutral box and adding in fun pops of color that scream spring and colorful dressing,” López says. “This is a great option if you want to add a pop of color to your wardrobe, have a favorite color you want to wear regularly, or need something to brighten up the rainy spring days.”

Styling Tip: While any shoes can work with trenches, Sky Pollard, head of product at Nuuly, loves pairing them with knee-high boots to create balance. Meanwhile, Maguire likes the looks of taller combat boots for a tougher juxtaposition. The footwear you choose will ultimately have the biggest impact on how your trench pops out, as most are tied at the waist, concealing what’s beneath.

The Utility Jacket Renaissance

Remember the green khaki, heavily-pocketed jacket from the mid-2010s? It’s back. “Almost every Pinterest girl had the army green utility jacket paired with a statement necklace and riding boots,” López recalls. “The death grip it had on us in the mid-2010s—around 2014 to 2016—was unreal. Now, she is returning, but in an updated way. We are seeing utility details in various jackets, like multiple front pockets, similar silhouettes, and buttons.” The main differentiator is that this year, utility jackets aren’t just green. “For an updated version of this trend, you can opt for denim, khaki, a print, or the classic olive green,” López says.

To jump onto this spring jacket trend, a couple of great options include the Spank Tie-Front Jean Shirt Jacket ($178) and the Ralph Lauren Belted Cotton Twill Field Jacket ($295). Of course, if you’re craving the classic, the Sézane Miro Jacket ($205) is a great pick.

Styling Tip: If you opt for a shorter utility jacket, consider pairing it with matching bottoms. If you opt for a longer silhouette, either pair it with any top and fitted bottom combo or wear it on its own as a mini dress (like many fashion week-goers have).

Retro Sporty Styles

‘90s style continues to influence us here in 2024, and according to Pollard, this year, it’s all about the sporty jacket resurgence. “This back-to-the-’90s trend is everywhere,” she says. Unlike some other spring jacket trends, the sporty jacket spans many genres, ranging from varsity jackets (like the The Laundry Room Coca Cola Racing Stadium Jacket, $198) and moto jackets (like the Iets Frans Oversize Moto Jacket, $47) to nylon windbreakers (such as the Fabletics Oversized Flyweight Windbreaker, $75), and mock neck zips (like the Adidas by Stella McCartney Woven Track Top, $170).

Styling Tip: Nylon windbreakers and mock neck zips pair best with athleisure looks. Meanwhile, varsity jackets and motocross-inspired jackets are easy to dress up or down with everything from leggings, sweats, and sports bras to little black dresses, catsuits, and tailored two-piece sets.

Outdoorsy Silhouettes

For decades now, women have been adopting and reworking many silhouettes initially reserved for menswear. “We have seen some traditional men’s ‘workwear’ pieces like suiting, loafers, and ties trickle into women’s fashion, but this year, we’re stepping outside of the office—literally—and taking inspiration from the outdoors, wearing Carhartt, Barbour, Patagonia, North Face, and similar brands,” López says. “The Barbour quilted jackets, in particular—like the Annandale Quilted Jacket, $220—are having a major moment right now as a nod to the classic, ‘old-money’ aesthetic, '90s Ralph Lauren-inspired looks. This trend is the perfect representation of the jackets in 2024.”

“Whether shrunken or oversized, a classic field jacket is giving preppy nostalgia,” Pollard points out. “It’s easy to pair with a casual look, but also very cool styled over a floaty floral dress for a transitional spring outfit.”

Styling Tip: Just because your jacket is outdoorsy doesn’t mean your whole outfit has to be (unless you want it to be, that is). The way López sees it, outdoor-inspired, heavy-duty work jackets (like the Carhartt Women’s Rugged Flex Loose Fit Canvas Detroit Jacket, $90) pair unexpectedly well with stilettos, skirts, and even office wear.

Quilted Jackets

Outdoorsy field jackets aren’t the only quilted jackets you can expect this spring. “It’s eclectic grandpa meets cottage core grandmillenial,” López says of the quilted jacket trend. “They’re lightweight like a trench coat but have a cropped silhouette, can add a little color or print to the outfit, and lean more feminine versus some of the other jackets [trending this year].”

Some quilted jackets that instantly spoke to us over the last couple months include the nostalgic Vera Bradley Quilted Jacket ($70), Yllw The Label's Vera Quilted Coat ($178), and the Free People Chloe Quilted Jacket ($198).

Styling Tip: Quilted jackets are an easy way to turn any casual spring outfit into a statement. “We are loving an easy quilted jacket to spice up a jeans-and-t-shirt outfit,” Pollard says. “Whether in a pattern, denim, or patchwork, [quilted jackets] are as cozy as a robe but will make you look like you put some thought into your outfit.”

Oversized Denim Shirt Jackets

Denim belongs in every closet, in the form of both jeans and jackets. “Denim will never go out of style, but instead of the fitted traditional denim jacket, we're going back to the 2010s indie sleaze oversized denim jacket and even the shirt jacket with lighter weight fabric and a defined waist with a belt,” López reveals. Some solid options include the Urban Renewal Parties Remade Jewel Studded Denim Jacket ($129) and the Good American Denim Trucker Jacket ($189).

Styling Tip: Denim is a casual wardrobe staple that pairs well with just about any outfit, ranging from athleisure sets to flouncy spring dresses and skirts. That said, Maguire is a particularly big fan of the Canadian tuxedo styling technique. “Bonus points if you’re wearing [a denim jacket] with denim jeans,” she says.

Cinched Blazers

We still love boxy, oversized silhouettes in 2024, but we’re also taking a turn for more tailored spring jacket trends, especially when it comes to blazers. “If you hated the super-oversized ‘80s power suit blazer, then I’m happy to tell you that a slimmer silhouette is trending with blazers having defined waistlines—some even have matching belts, and this adds a feminine silhouette to the workwear trend,” López says. A couple of our top tailored blazer picks include the Good American Compression Shine Sculpted Blazer ($199), Alice + Olivia Justine Rolled Cuff Blazer ($550), and Tove Cali Jacket ($1156).

Styling Tip: When working a tailored blazer into your wardrobe, remember that the goal is to define your shape. Because of this, you might want to wear it with slimmer jeans, trousers, or a column skirt. Alternatively, you could style it with straight-leg ‘90s mom jeans or looser trousers for a more relaxed ‘fit.

Not over the oversized blazer craze? Maguire says you don’t have to be. “This style jacket is a great tailored-topper that you can wear to the office or with your favorite pair of denim,” she says. “I prefer a double-breasted jacket, like the Lioness La Quinta Blazer, $71, as it adds a bit more volume to your look.”
