A classic tee is essential: It is foundational staple that goes with everything. But finding the best plus-size tee can be a struggle—a truth model Lauren Chan, who founded luxury plus-size range Henning in 2019, knows well.

Chan had trouble finding stylish, well-tailored, plus-size clothing in her size. And while a tee seems like the least-tailored item in most closets, it’s the type of must-have piece that everyone wants to look good in. So Henning launched with a stretch silk tee with side slits that eliminate that annoying belly cling. “This is a personal preference, but I carry most of my weight in my midsection, and I don’t feel comfortable wearing shirts that cling through the belly,” Chan says. “If I’m wearing a casual T-shirt, I prefer light cotton-jersey or heathered blends, because they tend to be flowier and less clingy. If I’m wearing a luxe tee, like Henning’s silk version, I look for (or in this case, design in) features like side slits to ensure the fabric will flow freely away from my body.”

Henning later launched a collab with sustainability-forward brand For Days in sizes XL through 4X. “We collaborated with For Days, because—in my opinion—they made the best-quality, most sustainable T-shirts for straight sizes, and we wanted to bring that option to plus-size shoppers,” Chan says.

Hayley Atkin, a stylist who works with clients like Mindy Kaling and Meghan Trainor, says that balance is key. “It’s a mix of style and comfort, not too baggy, but not too tight,” she says, recommending Athleta’s Daily Crew for its mid-weight cotton fabric and slightly longer length, which is perfect for tucking. “I think 100 percent cotton is best, as well as a medium cut that gently hugs the body without being too tight. [Right now,] a crew neckline is the most relevant.”
