12-year-old crotchet prodigy is giving back to the world with his craft
Jonah Larson is a crochet prodigy. The 12-year-old Wisconsin native taught himself how to crochet when he was only 5, and the world took notice not long after.
Larson wrote his first book at age 11, “Hello, Crotchet Friends!” and published a second in June 2020 titled, “Giving Back Crochet.” He (and his mom) run Jonah’s Hands a storefront, fundraising effort and crotchet community with free patterns.
You can always see what Jonah is crotcheting on his Instagram feed. A rainbow plush baby blanket, blue bath rug and even a few baby Yodas are some of his 2020 projects.

“I see crochet as a positive way to bring the world together and it’s just a craft that everybody comes together and enjoys,” Jonah told “Today.”
Jonah was born in Ethiopia and adopted by his parents as an infant. When he was a baby, doctors told his parents he may have developmental delays. He struggled to thrive in school and would get in trouble with teachers. When he started watching YouTube tutorials on crochet everything changed — even his performance at school.
But Jonah’s story is much bigger than being really good at crochet, he’s a philanthropist too. Many of his proceeds go to charitable organizations like Roots Ethiopia and a library he helped fund called the Jonah’s Hands Library.
“Raising money for Roots Ethiopia has been amazing,” Larson told My Modern Met in July. “I have now built a library and a science lab for the kids in the area where I was born — with the help of all of those who donated!”
Jonah’s big future plans are to become a surgeon so that he can do pro bono work in Ethiopia.
