The 12 Best Weighted Blankets for a Restful Night’s Sleep

When it comes to sleep, there are many factors that play into scoring quality sleep than simply settling your head upon the pillow. Adding one of the best weighted blankets to your bedtime routine will not only make you feel extra cozy and warm, but can also help relieve stress before drifting off. In fact, a 2020 study by The American Journal of Occupational Therapy found that weighted blankets are an effective therapeutic tool for decreasing both anxiety and insomnia.

More from WWD

“A weighted blanket has many benefits for improving sleep quality and overall relaxation,” says Carlie Gasia, Certified Sleep Science Coach at Sleepopolis. “It replicates the sensation of a comforting hug, exerting full-body pressure that triggers deep touch pressure (DTP).” Settling under a weighted blanket can simultaneously lower cortisol levels and boost serotonin (the happy molecule), which in turn enhances the production of melatonin and regulates sleep. Additionally, they can reduce the heart rate and slow your breathing. “This promotes relaxation, comfort, and calmness, significantly contributing to improving the overall quality of sleep,” Gasia says. She adds that weighted blankets can also be helpful for those dealing with a variety of disorders, including the aforementioned anxiety, depression, autism and ADHD.

A typical weighted blanket weighs as little as 10 pounds, though they can also weigh up to 30 pounds. The best way to figure out which one is right for you is to look for one that’s no more than 10 percent of your body weight. And, while smushing yourself under a 20-pound blanket may sound counterintuitive, the calming and restful benefits will outweigh that initial intimidation. “Weighted blankets are generally considered safe,” says Jeff Kahn, CEO and Co-Founder of Rise Science. “Children using weighted blankets should be supervised to ensure they can remove the blanket if needed and that it’s appropriate for their size and weight.” Make sure to be cautious if you’re furry friend wants to snuggle under one too.

If you’re treating yourself to a lush bath towel after a hot shower, settling atop your pillowcase, and lighting a candle to set the vibe, grab a weighted blanket to make you feel swaddled all throughout the night. We rounded up the 12 best weighted blankets at a variety of price points so you can rest assured on a calming night of shut-eye.

Gravity’s weighted blanket is the overwhelming choice for best in class. Not only does it come in three different sizes and weights — as little as a 15-pound twin or as large as a 35-pound queen —it does everything you hope a weighted blanket will. “Its tiny beads and polyester batting mixed in help diminish the sensation of beads, ensuring a quiet night of sleep,” says Gasia. Each of those aforementioned weights is designed to be about 10 percent of a person’s body weight: 15 pounds for 100+, 20 pounds for 180+, and 35 pounds for 230+.

The plush, quilted cover is luxe to the touch, the grid-shaped stitching helps space out the glass beads, and the buttons, zipper, and ties keep it fastened to its outer layer. It may be a bit warm for hotter sleepers, but Gravity also offers a cooling version for hot sleepers. If you’re looking for a weighted blanket that truly delivers on restful, relaxing sleep, this one is up to the task.

What testers say: “I used to only sleep for 2 hours at a time, wake up and then couldn’t get back to sleep. Now I sleep for 4-5 hours or more at a time. I look forward to going to bed at night because my Gravity Blanket calls my name! I am used to the weight of it now as it provides comfort and a feeling of security. I don’t go to sleep without it!”

If you want not just a weighted blanket, but a unique weighted blanket that looks chic, the Bearaby Tree Napper comes to mind. The hand-knit natural eucalyptus fibers make for a chunky design, and also feels super soft and cozy with comforting weights from 15-25 pounds. You can choose from eight different colors, including sage, lavender, desert rose, and driftwood (a light, pretty cream) — how dreamy.

What testers say: “I love my tree napper more than I thought I could! I instantaneously relax when I lie under it, but the cool tencel fabric doesn’t feel constricting like other weighted blankets I have used. I’m a hot sleeper and can even sleep with it.”

If you’ve ever been curious about how it feels to be swaddled like a baby, look no further. While it’s not quite the same as a weighted blanket, the Hug Sleep sleep pod contains many of the same calming benefits. The swaddler, which was seen on Shark Tank in 2020, cocoons you while you catch your Z’s. It comes in a variety of sizes to fit kids, tweens, and adults, and is fashioned in a breathable four-way stretch cotton to keep you cool and comfortable.

While it isn’t weighted, it does still feature compression therapy and DTP for restful, therapeutic sleep (we suggest sleeping on a silk pillowcase to double up on the spa-like effect). And, if you’re nervous about how to walk to the bathroom in the middle of the night — or even while you’re working from home — it even features a foot pocket to help you get up quickly and easily.

What testers say: “I’ve always struggled to fall/stay asleep. I’d tried weighted blankets but always overheated or felt constricted. I was skeptical, but the first night I tried it I had such a deep, restful sleep that I spent the next day looking forward to trying it again. I’m 5 feet/140 pounds, and the small is perfect. The fabric is breathable and stretchy enough that you can still stretch and reposition easily, but squeezy enough that it feels like a hug from an old friend.”

When considering a weighted blanket for kids, make sure it is appropriate for their body weight, and little ones should especially be monitored with use. Lauri Leadley, the Founder and President at Valley Sleep Center, says that weighted blankets can be useful for kids with autism or anxiety. “Trouble sleeping is a common symptom of autism, especially for children,” she says. “A weighted blanket is a natural remedy to promote sound sleep.” The Baloo blanket is made with them in mind, and might just be the perfect cozy gift this season.

Its nine-pound weight has loft without the heft, while quilted cotton fabric is soft and comforting. It comes in three fun colors — petal pink, aqua, and indigo — which are dyed with a combination of natural and chemical-free indigo, mahogany leaves, and bamboo and clover, respectively.

What testers say: “Our one son has struggled with some medical issues and this blanket has helped with his emotional stress and helped him to calm down when he gets stressed.”

The Saatva Weighted Blanket is a favorite of Gasia’s, who says its cotton velvet cover provides breathability for temperature regulation. She also likes the glass microbeads and cotton fill. “It’s quiet, and has undetectable bead movement within the blanket,” she says. While I don’t own this weighted blanket, I do have a Saatva mattress — and, considering I get the best sleep of my life on it, I’m definitely considering adding their weighted blanket to the mix (it’s at the top of my gift list this year.)

The organic cotton velvet will feel soft and lush to the touch, and the two different weights (12 pounds and 20 pounds) are ideal for a variety of body types. The all-natural glass beads also encourage relaxation due to their gentle, even pressure. The blanket is dry clean only, which is less convenient, but the luxe velvet look and feel makes up for it.

What testers say: “This blanket is the perfect addition to my sleep routine. It looks gorgeous on your bed too! Added bonus, the weight helps calm my dog during storms. All sleepers are happy in our house now.”

What to Consider When Shopping for a Weighted Blanket

  • Material of the blanket: When it comes to the material of a weighted blanket, you want it to be comfortable. “The type of material used for the blanket cover matters a lot,” says Gasia. They come in a range of materials, like cotton, microfiber, flannel, or fleece. Gasia says the material can also affect how hot or cold the blanket feels. “Some are better for staging cool, like cotton covers, while others are warmer, like mink covers.”

  • Size of the blanket: The size of a weighted blanket should be smaller than your typical comforter or duvet cover. “You want the blanket to fit the top of the bed without hanging over the sides,” recommends Kahn. If you’re tall, make sure you get a larger size so it fits over your entire body, from head to toe.

  • Filling of the blanket: Most weighted blankets have a glass bead fill. Others may have plastic beads, and some, like the Bearaby Tree Napper, feature no fill at all. The main thing to consider with any weighted blanket’s fill is how the beads are distributed. “It’s essential that the filling inside the blanket is evenly spread out so that it stays balanced,” says Gasia.

  • Care instructions: The majority of weighted blankets will be machine washable. However, a select few, like the Saatva Weighted Blanket, must be dry cleaned. Gasia recommends looking for weighted blankets that feature easy-care options, like being machine washable, or putting one inside a washable duvet cover.

The Benefits of a Weighted Blanket

  • Deep pressure stimulation: Similar to the feeling of being hugged, a weighted blanket features this sort of calming pressure to relax the body. “This has a calming effect for some individuals, potentially reducing anxiety and increasing a sense of security,” says Kahn.

  • Grounding: If you suffer from anxiety or stress, a weighted blanket may help with grounding. Studies have even shown that grounding exercises can help calm and reduce inflammation. Sleeping under a weighted blanket can have a similar feel to the earth’s surface, too. “Weighted blankets have been known to promote grounding, which reduces cortisol levels in the body,” says Leadley.

  • Swaddling: Swaddling isn’t just for babies. “The feeling of being enveloped in warmth, swaddled, and cared for alleviates tossing and turning,” says Leadley. Similar to grounding, it aids in the feeling of added security and keeps you still for a solid night of sleep. A great example of a swaddling blanket for adults is the Hug Sleep Sleep Pod.

  • Pressure: While the phrase “no pressure” has its day, pressure has the night. “The pressure from weighted blankets effectively engages the autonomic nervous system,” says Gasia. This system is responsible for managing fight or flight responses, which can result in a reduced heart rate and slower breathing.

How to Clean a Weighted Blanket

Most weighted blankets can be put directly in the washing machine. If they have attached covers, simply remove the cover and throw that in the washing machine on a regular or gentle cycle, and then tumble dry low. A few blankets need to be spot cleaned or dry cleaned, but typically, they can be washed like normal.
