Everyone is always talking about the best sneakers or the best city shoes, but what's the best footwear for homebodies? Especially as the temperatures begin to drop and we seek comfort in restful nights, our feet should be shielded from chilly tile and hard-on-the-feet hardwood floors. Our feet need a warm embrace just as much as our back and shoulders when we swathe ourselves in a favorite wrap sweater or blanket.

Slippers' benefits don't stop at warmth. For anyone with foot pain, there are slippers with arch support that can relieve a bit of that discomfort and make walking, even just at home, more pleasant. They also make great everyday shoes, something to slide into when we need to grab the mail or run into the garden.

Whatever your need, there's a style for you. Drawing on reviews and expert recommendations, we crafted a list of the best slippers to buy now. Find them, ahead.

Best Overall: UGG Coquette Slipper

$120 at Amazon.com

$90 at Nordstrom.com

What We Love: The soles are sturdy and durable.

What We Don’t Love: With time, the fur looks matted.

We have to give it to the classic Ugg slipper for being the best of the best. Although I was never really a slipper person, these have completely changed the game for me. My feet are always warm in their embrace. Beyond the signature sheep fur, I love the durable sole. With time, the fur looks less fresh — matted even — but it doesn't become less soft, so the cloud-walk feeling never really lets up over time.

Material: Sheepskin, sheep fur, lamb fur, polyester | Size: 5–12 | Colors: 11

Best Budget: COFACE Women's Fuzzy Slides

$22 at Amazon.com

What We Love: They provide arch support with layers high-density memory foam that adapts to the contours of your feet.

What We Don’t Love: The faux fur straps stretch out over time, according to some reviewers.

A slipper that’s cute, supportive, and affordable? We’re sold. “After a few days of moving into my new apartment, my feet were killing me because the floors were so hard, and I didn’t have any furniture to sit on,” says InStyle contributing editor Emily Cieslak. “I went on Amazon to order some supportive slippers quickly, and these were the best option I found.” These slides have extensive arch support that typically comes at a premium. They're ergonomically designed to support the foot’s arch and the memory foam absorbs pressure as you walk and stand around. "[They] saved my feet,” says Cieslak.

Material: Polyester | Size: 5–11 | Colors: 9

Best Splurge: Jenni Kayne Shearling Moroccan Slipper

$275 at Jennikayne.com

What We Love: There's a convertible heel for two ways to wear.

What We Don’t Love: They don’t have a lot of traction and could slip on hard floors.

If you're feeling indulgent, perhaps you should take fashion stylist Jamie Grimstad's favorite slippers for a spin. “They’re cozy, chic, and a little bit more elevated, making them appropriate to wear while entertaining some friends for drinks,” she says. The super fluffy style has a backside that’s designed to fold down for convertibility, so you can wear it two ways as a shoe with a back heel or as a mule. They only come in three sizes — small, medium, and large — which doesn't feel too precise so be sure to consult the size guide for the best possible fit.

Material: Sheep | Size: S–L | Colors: 2

Best Arch Support: Vionic Women’s Gemma Mule Slipper

$48 at Amazon.com

See at Boscovs.com

What We Love: The design has helped tons of people with plantar fasciitis.

What We Don’t Love: The fuzz from the shoe falls off and leaves trails around the house, according to some reviewers.

The best slippers have arch support, and given that this option by Vionic was designed by a podiatrist, you can expect that it was created with function and foot health. That’s why thousands of people have found relief in this slipper, with some even having said it helped them recover from plantar fasciitis, or inflammation in the foot that can cause intense heel pain. This is perhaps because the thicker heel is shock absorbent, which makes walking around feel quite gentle.

Material: Rubber, polyester | Size: 5–12 | Colors: 23

Best Outdoor: Allbirds Women's Wool Loungers

$105 at Allbirds.com

$37 at Dickssportinggoods.com

What We Love: Despite the backheel, you can slip into them without using your hands.

What We Don’t Love: They don’t have any arch support.

No, an outdoor slipper is not the same as a regular outdoor shoe. It’s something you put on when you’re running into the backyard, taking the trash out, and picking something out of your garden. For those instances, Grimstad recommends this style from Allbirds, which are light but still warm and comfortable given their soft merino wool construction. (No itching here.) Although they lack arch support, they do have a cushiony sole that makes walking around feel a little more luxe.

Material: Merino wool, sugarcane, foam | Size: 5–11 | Colors: 4

Best Moccasins: HomeTop Moccasins House Slippers

$28 at Amazon.com

What We Love: The grippy soles make them possible to wear outdoors, too.

What We Don’t Love: They run small.

We love a moccasin design for so many reasons. For one, the enclosed heel means all-around fluff, a more 360-degree cushioned experience. It also has a shoe-like appeal, with a ripple pattern on the bottom for extra grip so the style can be worn outside as well. Reviewers said the style runs a bit small, so ordering a size up is the way to go.

Material: Thermoplastic rubber, faux fur | Size: 6–11 | Colors: 6

Best Water-Resistant: lululemon Restfeel Women's Slide

$58 at Shop.lululemon.com

What We Love: They're breezy enough for summer.

What We Don’t Love: They slip off easily, according to some reviewers.

Slides are a no-fuss, no-fuzz alternative to the plush options we’ve featured so far. The Lululemon option has a soft foam layered above a firmer foam, giving you both structure and softness. With no decorative stitchings, patterns, or designs, it’s a great minimalist option that doesn’t take away from your summer loungewear look.

Material: Foam | Size: 5–12 | Colors: 9

Best Leather: Minnetonka Chesney Mule Slipper

$54 at Amazon.com

$55 at Nordstrom.com

What We Love: They’re extremely warm and cozy for the winter.

What We Don’t Love: They run small.

Similar to the popular Ugg slipper, but not quite as pricey, is this Minnetonka slipper. It features a plush faux fur interior and suede leather exterior that’s very similar to our top pick, but at $50, it’s more affordable. I tried both, and while the Ugg version certainly feels more substantial, this is a perfectly great alternative. It doesn’t lack warmth, and it has a pretty solid sole. It’s also offered in far more color options, allowing you to choose between a few cozy favorites. I’m a size 8.5, and I found the size 9 I ordered to be a little snug, so I recommend sizing up.

Material: Sheep shearling, suede | Size: 5–11 | Colors: 14

Best Wool: L.L.Bean Wool Slipper Clogs

$79 at Llbean.com

What We Love: There's a subtle arch support in the insole.

What We Don’t Love: The rustic design might not be for everyone.

Wool is one of nature’s best insulators, so it only makes sense to want it in a slipper. And who better to trust in making cold-fighting accessories than outdoor label L.L.Bean? This shoe is made almost entirely of wool, from the lining to the exterior. Matched with some thick socks, not even the slightest bit of frost will make its way to your toes. The sole has strong traction, too, so you can wear this style out to the grocery store without fear of slipping on the linoleum. For anyone with a half size, the brand recommends sizing down.

Material: Wool, foam | Size: 6–11 | Colors: 2

Best Booties: Quince Australian Shearling Mini Boots

See at Quince.com

What We Love: They’re about half the price of competitors.

What We Don’t Love: The size options are limited.

Last time we featured these booties, they sold out like hotcakes, so waste no time if you are even remotely interested. If the $70 price tag fools you, rest assured that they’re indeed made of shearling and suede. Quince is famously known for their direct-to-consumer model, making it possible to offer more affordable pieces (in this case, half the price of competitors). The boots are finished with a water-repellent exterior, so together with the non-slip rubber sole, you could easily wear these outside, too.

Material: Sheep shearling, sheep suede | Size: 6–10 | Colors: 3

What to Keep in Mind

Material

Since you’re craving comfort, choosing the right material for you is key. Grimstad recommends wool, shearling, and suede, not just for their warmth but also for their elevated appeal as well. There’s no doubt that wool and shearling are some of the warmest materials while still being moisture-wicking, allowing you to stay toasty without sweating and, well, smelling. On the other hand, the Lululemon Restfeel Slides are an example of a summer-friendly style, as their foam offers plenty of cushion without the plush materials.

Style

Like traditional shoes, whether it's your knee-high boots or leather sneakers, slippers come in a variety of styles. You’ll want to consider if you’re going to wear them inside or outside and in the winter or in the summer, as examples, before making your purchase. For further context, the enclosed heel and rubbery traction of Allbirds' Wool Loungers are better suited for stepping outside than, say, Minnetonka's Chesney style. For all at-home activities, Grimstad recommends slip-on styles like these so you can put them on and kick them off with ease to take a shower or curl up on the couch. Ease and comfort are what we’re after here, are we not?

Your Questions, Answered

What kind of slippers do podiatrists recommend?

Are you looking for slippers with arch support that can help your plantar fasciitis? Vionic's Gemma Mule Slipper is not only recommended by podiatrists but created by them, too. It has an orthotic insole, which helps to correct foot problems and relieve pain. The arch support ensures you’re not straining your foot either, giving you an all-around ideal shoe that’s both supportive and stylish.

What are the best slippers to wear at home?

While we featured several slippers that can be worn outdoors, the best slippers for home are those intentionally crafted for the comfort of the great indoors. That means there’s an easy slip-on and off style, a plush interior lining, and a good grip to keep you from sliding around hardwood floors.

How do you wash slippers?

Before we get into how to wash slippers, let us first provide a few recommendations on how to keep them fresh longer. It's good to wear socks with slippers, so that there isn’t any direct foot-to-shoe contact, minimizing the chance of odor. You should also store them in an open space to let them breathe for further assurance, especially with pairs that can't be thrown in the washing machine (most on this list). How you can wash your slippers depends on the material, so you’ll want to read each individual item's care guide. The Ugg Coquette Slipper, for example, requires special cleaning products to properly care for the sheepskin material.
