This $12.6 Million Home in the British Isles Has Some of Jersey’s Most Famed Gardens

Grey Gables, on the island of Jersey, a self-governing British Crown Dependency in the Channel Islands, is a quintessential English country estate, and now it can be yours for $12.6 million (or £10 million).

With its acres of landscaped gardens, grand residence, tennis court, and guest cottage, Grey Gables is considered one of the most noteworthy homes on the island. Set over 7.5 acres, the property is located in the parish of St. Brelade and feels exceptionally private, even though it is within close walking distance of the village and harbor of St. Aubin and La Haule Beach.

The stately home features a large conservatory off the kitchen.

The 10,400-square-foot home, built in 1912 and faced with rusticated granite blocks, was inspired by Barnsley House in the Cotswolds and mixes Arts and Crafts- and Edwardian-style architecture. Its imposing façade, some of which is covered in wisteria, has ornate gables and tall chimneys, along with some traditional Jersey-style architectural elements such as an elaborate doorway with medieval-style buttressing. The home has been lovingly restored and modernized over the years but retains its original asymmetrical layout, granite fireplaces, and notable interior architecture.

The sprawling eight-bedroom, six-bathroom home feels like your own private castle, in part thanks to the numerous entertaining rooms. The main floor houses a grand formal reception room with parquet hardwood floors and exposed timber beams, a drawing room, a formal dining room, a large kitchen, a garden-facing sitting room, a study, and an office. The hallmark of the main level, however, is the spectacular, light-filled conservatory that offers ample seating area and blinds to protect from the sun.

The formal entry features herringbone parquet on the floor and slender wood beams across the ceiling.

Connected via an opulent mahogany staircase, the second floor has five bedrooms along with another impressive room: a billiard/library with cathedral ceilings, wooden arches, and windows that overlook the grounds. The third floor offers four more bedrooms—one of which has a small, private kitchen—and a common sitting room with views of the backyard.

Near the main residence is a detached, two-bedroom cottage, which can be used as a gym or yoga studio, staff quarters, an artist studio, or for guests. There’s also an outdoor swimming pool with changing rooms, a summer gazebo, an Edwardian-style greenhouse, a grass tennis court, a five-car garage, and several outbuildings related to the landscaping, including a garden workshop.

The private gardens at Grey Gables are renowned across the island as some of the finest. There are formal beds with shrubs, a rose garden, an herb garden, an orchard, and ample lawn space, while private walking trails are lined with rhododendrons, hydrangeas, and leafy trees.

The home is listed by Zoe Mayo of Hunt Estates, an affiliate of Christie’s International Realty.
