After 117 Years, an Irish Family Finally Has a Baby Girl!

Although everyone can agree that delivering a healthy baby is the single most important thing any expecting parent can hope for, some do nevertheless have strong opinions on what gender they'd love to welcome into the family. That's why so-called "gender disappointment" is a real thing that some parents face.
Well, if you think you've been long waiting a long time for a daughter—consider that one Irish family waited 117 years!
That's right, a family in the U.K. had gone well over a century without welcoming a baby girl into the family. But the long streak was at last broken last week when parents Laurence and Leanne May delivered baby girl Saoirse Grace May.
Dad Laurence told the Mirror, "There's great excitement, everyone was delighted. We had great celebrations. We didn't know it was going to be a girl, it was a surprise."
And can you imagine what a surprise it was after 117 years of waiting?! According to census records that Laurence investigated, he determined that the last girl baby born to the family was his great aunt Anne, in 1898!
Of course he's tickled with the novelty of the news, but like all parents, he was first concerned about the fundamentals. "The main thing was that the baby was healthy so that's all we wanted one way or the other," he said.
Nevertheless, he couldn't resist a little joke: "It could be all girls from here on in—you never know."
True indeed! You never know.
