New Year's Eve Party Ideas

Celebrate the Past Year with a PowerPoint Party

A lot can happen in a year, so before welcoming in the next one, take a moment to reflect on the past 365 days. If you're hosting a smaller group for New Year's Eve, ask everyone to create a PowerPoint (or Google Slides, or whatever you prefer) presentation that shows off their favorite memories from the past year. To keep things more streamlined, you can share question prompts for people to answer in their slides, or guidelines for a time limit for each presentation, or just let everyone do what feels right to them. Then, at the party, you can cast the presentations up on the TV or a big projector screen, allowing everyone their time to present and learn more about each other's lives. Once the presentations are over, everyone can toast to making more positive memories in the coming year.

Make It a Pajama Party

The dress code for New Year's Eve is typically understood to be glitz and glam—but it doesn't have to be. Give your party guests an excuse to keep it cozy and casual by inviting them to a pajama party. Play up the theme by providing sleepover-style food and entertainment. Order pizzas, set out bowls of popcorn, have a movie playing on the TV in the background, and maybe even set up a game of twister. The best part about this party theme? When your guests head home after midnight, they'll already be dressed for bed.

Set up a Cocktail Station

You can't forget about the beverages when hosting a New Year's Eve party. To make the drink display extra-fun and interactive, batch out a few drink mixes ahead of time, set out a selection of different liquors, and allow your guests to make the cocktails of their choice. This will also save you from having to play bartender all night long. (Don't forget to offer some non-alcoholic options as well.)

Stock a Candy Bar

A drink bar is basically expected at a party, but a candy bar will be a delightful surprise to any of your guests. Set up a table with glass jars and canisters (you can easily find an eclectic assortment at any local thrift store) and fill them with an assortment of different candies for guests to snack on throughout the night. You can also turn the candy bar into a party favor opportunity by setting out treat bags that guests can fill with candy before they leave.

Craft Vision Boards

If you're celebrating New Year's with a smaller group of friends that likes crafty activities, invite everyone over to create vision boards for the year ahead. Pick up some poster board, glue sticks, and extra scissors and ask everyone to bring a couple old magazines they have lying around. Everyone can spend the night cutting and pasting images to their vision boards while chatting about some goals they have for the year ahead.

Make Sure There's a Photo Backdrop

We're living in the age of Instagram, and that means a party is only as good as its photo opportunities. Give your guests a fun way to remember the night by setting up a photo backdrop and encouraging them to take photos. For a NYE theme, its as easy as hanging up some silver tinsel curtains (which typically cost less than $10) on a wall and pointing a light in that direction. You can also set up a tripod with your own phone or camera—and then upload all the photos to a shared album later. Or, just let everyone snap some shots with their own phones. Bonus idea: If you have an instant camera, like a Polaroid, keep it nearby and let guests capture a photo that they can take home with them as a souvenir at the end of the night.

Do an Interactive Countdown

The main event of any New Year's Eve party is the countdown to midnight. So, play this up at your party with a big, interactive countdown that your guests can interact with. This might look like a large paper clock attached to the wall with a cardboard hour hand to move with the time. Or, you can number balloons to correspond with the hours of the night, popping them as each hour passes.

Stock Up on NYE Props

If you offer your guests New Year's Eve-themed props and accessories, no one will have to worry if they're over- or under-dressed. Party props are the great equalizer. Stock up on 2024 glasses, Happy New Year's hats and headbands, feather boas, and any other festive gear and offer them at the door for guests to put on. No one can take themselves (or others around them) too seriously when they're covered in accessories from Party City—and this will help keep the environment fun, playful, and light-hearted.

Throw a Disco Dance Party

Disco balls are already perfectly on-theme for New Year's Eve, so why not go all out and throw a disco-themed party? Tell your guests to arrive in attire suited for a '70s disco club, make sure to spin plenty of era-appropriate dance music, and, of course, decorate with disco balls.

Make It a Bring-Your-Own-Dip Party

New Year's Eve parties typically start after dinner, but guests will still need some food to keep everyone going past midnight. To get your guests involved—and to lower the expenses and work on your hands—turn your party into a dip party. Ask everyone to bring their favorite dip and you'll end up with a buffet of dips that will be perfect for snacking on all throughout the night. To make sure you have all your bases covered (sweet, savory, spicy, etc.) send out a spreadsheet, so everyone can share what they're bringing to the party.

Play a Party Game

If you want to help your guests mingle and stay engaged during the party, plan a game or two that you can all play together once everyone has settled in. Depending on your crowd, you can choose a more intimate, sit-down board game, go for a more rowdy drinking game, or try out a longer-form narrative game.
