What should you consider before buying a U-shaped sectional?

Cushions

I mean...cushions are kind of an essential factor when it comes to the comfort of your couch. Talk with whoever you're going to be sharing your sofa with (a partner, roommate, etc.), and decide whether you like your cushions on the firmer side or full of fluff. Then research accordingly! Even if you're buying your couch online, it can be a good idea to go to a physical store and feel things out.

Rehman also suggests avoiding a certain type of cushion covering: "A lot of sectionals will have tightly pulled cushions to maintain the U-shape, but this results in a less comfortable seating experience," he says. Instead, he says, look for "loose or detached cushions," which are also easier to clean.

Fabric

When it comes to upholstery, you're going to want to think about your lifestyle. Do you have kids? Pets? A clumsy S.O.? If you answered yes to any of those questions, Rehman suggests choosing "a performance fabric, like microvelvet or Sunbrella fabric." You also probably want to avoid light colors, unless the material is washable.

Cost

Not everyone can shell out big bucks on a couch. I get that, and that's why I found a bunch of gorgeous and affordable options (just look up!). But if you do have a bit of a budget to upgrade your living room, Rehman suggests splurging on your sofa and cutting costs elsewhere, like on end tables and accent chairs.

"For something as substantial as a sectional, which you'll be using daily, it's worth making a higher-quality investment," he says. "In the long run, you'll reap the benefits and get your money's worth."
