11 quotes from the “Before Sunrise” trilogy that define real love
The Before Sunrise trilogy is all about love — pure love — and how it changes with time. The Richard Linklater films, which began in 1995 with Before Sunrise, are magical, intense and full of romance. For those of you who haven’t seen the films (stop what you’re doing now and go watch them all!), they are all about Jesse (played by Ethan Hawke), an American, and Celine (played by Julie Delpy), a French woman, who meet on a train in the first film and spend one day together in Vienna.
In the second film, Before Sunset, they reunite in Paris for one more day, nine years later, while Jesse is on a book tour. The final film in the installment, Before Midnight, shows their life together nine more years later while on a trip as a family to Greece. No matter which movie you watch there is love, so we had to round up the best quotes from the trilogy that truly define real love. You’re welcome!
“I think I can really fall in love when I know everything about someone – the way he’s going to part his hair, which shirt he’s going to wear that day, knowing the exact story he’d tell in a given situation. I’m sure that’s when I know I’m really in love.” — Celine, Before Sunrise
You tell ’em, Celine!
“Listen, if somebody gave me the choice right now, of to never see you again or to marry you, alright, I would marry you, alright. And maybe that’s a lot of romantic bullshit, but people have gotten married for a lot less.” — Jesse, Before Sunrise
Not the most romantic proposal, but it’s real and we like it.
“If there’s any kind of magic in this world…it must be in the attempt of understanding someone.” — Celine, Before Sunrise
Celine was definitely ready to take a risk on love, because she knew love is worth the risk.
“It’s like our time together is just ours. It’s our own creation. It must be like I’m in your dream and you’re in mine or something.” — Celine, Before Sunrise
Living in a dream wouldn’t be so bad, would it?
“There’s gotta be something more to love than commitment.” — Jesse, Before Sunset
#Preach.
“You can never replace anyone because everyone is made up of such beautiful specific details.” — Celine, Before Sunset
Celine is so deep and yet totally relatable.
“I guess when you’re young, you just believe there’ll be many people with whom you’ll connect with. Later in life, you realize it only happens a few times.” — Celine, Before Sunset
So sad, and so true.
Celine: “Baby, you are gonna miss that plane. Jesse: “I know.” — Before Sunset
Love is all about taking chances and being with someone you love, which is exactly why Jesse didn’t get on that plane!
“I am giving you my whole life ok? I got nothing larger to give, I’m not giving it to anybody else. If you’re looking for permission to disqualify me, I’m not gonna give it to you. Ok? I love you. And I’m not in conflict about it. Okay? But if what you want is like a laundry list of all the things that piss me off, I can give it to you.” — Jesse, Before Midnight
This is definitely what love looks like 10 plus years later.
“You’re just like the little girls and everybody else. You wanna live inside some fairytale. I’m just trying to make things better. I tell you that I love you unconditionally, I tell you that you’re beautiful, I tell you that your ass looks great when you’re 80. I try to make you laugh.” — Jesse, Before Midnight
Why can’t we live in a fairytale again?
“If you want true love, then this is it. This is real life. It’s not perfect, but it’s real.” — Jesse, Before Midnight
It really isn’t perfect. And that’s what makes it perfect.
After all of this love and honesty, we need to re-watch the Before Sunrise trilogy ASAP!
