11 lesser-known Christmas movies to watch on Netflix, if you feel like mixing things up
Honestly, our list of Christmas movies to stream on Netflix is almost too long. Our list of Christmas movies to fit in before they’re seasonally inappropriate in general is too long. And still, we can’t ever pass up an opportunity to add to it. Thus, we’ve compiled a list of Christmas movies on Netflix you may not have heard of. Because sometimes it’s good to take a break from A Christmas Prince (we guess), in favor of a lesser-known holiday movie, just waiting to be streamed…
1. Christmas Inheritance
So you’ve seen A Christmas Prince (like, a billion times), but did you catch the Christmas movie released shortly thereafter? Christmas Inheritance tells the story of a socialite, Ellen, who returns to her father’s hometown to appreciate the value of hard work before she can takeover his company. It’s a delight and the romance is on-point, so make room on that Christmas queue of yours.
2. The Spirit of Christmas
A workaholic lawyer, Kate, is sent to a supposedly haunted inn to get some paperwork signed at long last so they can sell it. Unfortunately, it’s actually haunted by a 100-year-old hunk with bad hair who she’s absolutely going to fall in love with. It’s like a bad, Christmas-themed Kate and Leopold and we love it.
3. Dear Santa
Dear Santa is your typical Christmas rom-com, but it stars Amy Acker (who you might know from Person of Interest or Angel) and was directed by — wait for it — Jason Priestley. So already, we’re shocked it’s not more well-known for those reasons alone.
4. My Dad is Scrooge
Sometimes the best bad Christmas movies are bad Christmas movies made for kids, because it seems like everybody just kind of goes “nah, they’re young, it doesn’t need to make sense.” My Dad is Scrooge involves an anti-holiday dad, obviously, and a bunch of talking farm animals, including one voiced by Ginny Weasley herself.
5. My Santa
A single mom falls for the local mall Santa only to find out he’s actually the real Santa’s son. Sign us UP.
6. Christmas Ranch
If you were a horse girl, or you know a horse girl, this is the obscure Christmas flick for you. A young girl is sent to stay with her grandmother after getting into some trouble, and ends up working to save her grandmother’s ranch from foreclosure.
7. Marry Me For Christmas
Like The Proposal but Christmas-y, single Charlene pretends to be engaged to her employee to appease her family. Okay, so it’s not quite like The Proposal, but is there anything better than a fake married/fake engaged/fake dating story?
8. 12 Dates of Christmas
Kate (Why is every female lead in every Christmas movie named Kate? There’s a conspiracy and we want to know more) goes on a bad blind date on Christmas Eve…and then has to relive it twelve times. Sounds like a literal nightmare, but we’ll watch it anyway.
9. The Christmas Candle
We’ve never even heard of this one, but it’s set in 19th century rural England, which already sounds Christmas-y enough to give a watch. It stars Samantha Barks, aka Eponine from the Les Misérables movie, and the logline is: “A pastor who’s suffered a personal loss accepts a position in a town that believes in a Christmas miracle candle, which he strives to abolish.” We don’t know what that means, TBH, but we want to find out.
10. Christmas in the City
We’re here for the seldom lauded but always entertaining “mall Santa is real Santa” plot line. This one also features some sexy mall Santas, so like, what more could you ask for?
11. The Christmas Project
Netflix sums this one up as: “Four brothers prepare for war when they’re forced to deliver secret holiday gifts to the school bullies. But they soon learn kindness goes a long way.” So we’re thinking Stranger Things meets a Hallmark Channel movie. Yes, please.
