Entryway rugs are not only a way to protect your floors; they can also act as a gorgeous welcoming feature that brings people into your home. They’re a spot for guests to wipe their feet, sure, but they can also set the mood with an eye-catching pattern, pop of color, or neutral hue that blends right in. Stylish, versatile, and functional, an entryway rug sets the stage for the rest of your home’s interior.

How do you choose a quality entryway rug? Well, a lot of it comes down to personal preference and style. However, it’s also important to consider details like the material, design, and long-term performance of a rug. We researched rug options that are both aesthetically pleasing and durable enough to withstand high traffic, pets, kids, and more. We also spoke with Sebastian Brauer, Senior Vice President of Product Design for Crate & Barrel, who explained why entryway rugs are important when it comes to enhancing the design of the space.

Below, we’ve rounded up the best entryway rugs, with our picks including options that feature durable fibers, plenty of variety in style, and secure backings. We’ve pulled together a list of rugs that’ll suit your space, budget, and needs.

Pottery Barn Wheatley Synthetic Rug with Anti-Slip Backing

Best Overall

What We Like

  • Woven from recycled polyester

  • Flexible, durable synthetic latex backing

  • Easy to clean

  • Resists stretching

What We Don’t Like

  • Not fully water-resistant

The Wheatley Synthetic Easy Care Rug from Pottery Barn is our top choice because it blends all of the most important features into a single rug: easy to clean, protective for flooring, and attractive with any design aesthetic. The neutral shades of this woven low-pile rug allow it to fit in anywhere, and it’s highly durable for your frequently-trafficked entryway. Plus, we love its eco-minded construction. This rug is made of recycled polyester fibers that come from single-use plastic bottles and make for a tough-wearing texture that resists dirt and wear.

Underneath the woven upper, synthetic latex is used to create a durable, slip-resistant rug backing. The latex also works to reduce odor and odor buildup, and it helps make it more resilient when it comes to stretching and pulling. The combination of synthetic materials makes this a great option if you have pets or you’re constantly cleaning the entryway of your home due to mud and dirt and build up. When this rug gets dirty, it can be vacuumed and shaken for a refresh.

Just keep in mind that it isn’t fully water-resistant, so you’ll want to keep an eye on your floors when there’s wet weather. However, because this entryway rug is all around such a durable and well-constructed option, we don’t think it’s a deal breaker of a detail.

U'Artlines Boho Chic Aztec Non-Shedding Living Room Entryway Rug

Best Budget

What We Like

  • Odor-resistant synthetic fibers

  • Suitable for indoor or outdoor use

  • Quick-drying low pile construction

What We Don’t Like

  • No anti-slip backing

  • Not the softest underfoot

The U'Artlines Boho Chic Aztec Entryway Runner Rug is intended for both indoor and outdoor use, making it a great option for durability and stain-resistance. While we love the versatility of this entryway rug, it’s made even better by its super budget-friendly price. Affordable and long-lasting, with extra perks worked right into the construction of this rug, it’s a hard one to beat in value!

Made of synthetic fibers that don’t shed, this entryway rug is attractive and wonderfully durable. Those fibers are odor-resistant, too, which ensures your rug doesn’t develop any funky fragrances over time and with wear. Plus, they can take on moisture and grime without forming stains or developing mold and mildew. The rug’s low pile also helps it dry out quickly when wet.

While the synthetic fibers do work to provide the rug with more grip, there’s no extra material on the back to prevent slipping–so it would definitely work best paired with a rug runner or double-sided rug tape underneath. Plus, it’s not the softest or plushest rug underfoot, but since it’s designed to catch dirt before it winds up in your house, you likely won’t be on it without shoes often.

The Citizenry Shayak jute accent rug

Best Splurge

What We Like

  • Heavy, thick jute weave

  • Dirt-disguising pattern

  • Sustainably and fair trade made

What We Don’t Like

  • No anti-slip backing

  • Lengthy shipping periods at times

If it’s a luxurious, high-quality entryway rug you’re searching for, this is it. Each individual fiber in the Shayak Jute Accent Rug from The Citizenry is incredibly thick due to the fact that it’s made of natural jute. It’s made with the thickest fibers because it’s specifically intended for high-traffic areas in your home. The black-dyed, natural and slightly darker jute colors work well with the pattern to minimize the appearance of any wear (and we love how well they hide dirt, too!) In addition to the standout jute, this rug is also a sustainable and Fair Trade certified pick. It carries OEKO-TEX certification, and it’s handwoven in Panipat, India, which is one of the world’s main rug-making hubs.

Just keep in mind that you’ll want to add a rug pad or adhesive underneath this product, as it doesn’t feature a non-slip backing of any kind. Additionally, shipping can take time, especially if the rug is backordered (which happens throughout the year). However, we think the extra-thick jute and quality construction outweigh these slight disadvantages.

Threshold Woven Runner Rug Solid Neutral

Best High Traffic

What We Like

  • Latex-cotton backing

  • Handmade with durable jute fibers

  • Comfortable underfoot

What We Don’t Like

  • Not washable

  • Weave can loosen and fray if vacuumed

The Woven Runner Rug from Threshold is made from 100 percent natural jute fibers that lend this rug a thick feel without being too brittle. This not only makes it decently durable, but it also makes it a comfortable option for walking or standing on barefoot. With a latex-cotton blend backing on the underside, you’ll also enjoy a little bit of cushioning and less slippage. The jute works well in just about any entryway thanks to its neutral, natural hue, and the rug can survive everything from pets’ paws to frequent foot traffic.

The tight weave of the rug prevents it from shedding, which is a particularly great aspect since it’s intended for high-use areas. However, it is a bit tricky to clean; if you vacuum its surface, it can start to fray or loosen the weave. Instead, you’ll need to shake or beat the rug to get the dirt out. However, that’s pretty common with natural fiber rugs, and you’ll find this one does a great job at trapping loose dirt and debris that’s tracked inside.

Joss & Main Pinafore Dark Blue/Cream Indoor/Outdoor Rug

Best for Dirt

What We Like

  • Eye-catching Persian-inspired pattern

  • Polyester and polypropylene fibers

  • Stain- and wear-resistant

  • Made for indoor or outdoor use

What We Don’t Like

  • Not soft or plush

The Pinafore Indoor/Outdoor Rug from Joss & Main is the perfect option for those concerned with dirt and grime build-up but don’t want to sacrifice a traditional-looking rug or runner. Featuring a classic Persian-inspired pattern and cool shades of blue and cream, this entryway rug looks like it’s worthy of the center spot in your living room–but it’s built for the highest-traffic areas of your home. Made of super low-pile polyester and polypropylene fibers, it’s woven incredibly tightly to prevent dirt particles from penetrating and getting trapped in those fibers. Since it’s intended for outdoor use as well as indoor, the rug is particularly great at resisting water and mud as well.

This rug is not only beautiful, but also perfect for hiding the appearance of grime. Your guests can wipe their feet without worry, thanks to the stain- and wear-resistant nature of the rug that’ll keep it looking new for a long time to come. Plus, the timeless colors and pattern make pairing this rug with different styles of decor a total breeze. While its low pile and plasticky surface aren’t super soft, it’s really the ideal solution for wiping shoes clean.

Ruggable Kamran Runner Rug

Best for Pets

What We Like

  • Machine-washable

  • Stain- and water-resistant

  • Lightweight

  • Available with standard or cushioned rug pad

What We Don’t Like

  • Larger sizes can be heavy

  • Some patterns may fade over time

Ruggable’s Kamran Runner Rug is unique–it’s designed to be machine-washable, which makes it a particularly good choice for those with pets. You can literally pick this entryway rug up and toss it in your washing machine like an item of clothing, making it super convenient for messy, muddy paws as well as accidents, grassy stains, and more. Plus, in addition to its washable nature, the low pile and stain- and water-resistant fibers make the rug a breeze when it comes to pet hair and tough dirt.

Additionally, every Ruggable rug includes your choice of a standard or cushioned pad that detaches from the rug for easy maintenance. The standard option is best if you need the rug to fit under a doorway, while the padded version would be great for hallways or kitchens (or anywhere else you’re on your feet frequently.)

The rug itself features a vintage medallion design that brings together blue, pink and cream hues. The pattern itself is busy enough to distract from any dirt or grime, but neutral enough to pair perfectly with different styles of decor. However, it’s worth noting that the larger the rug size, the heavier yours will be, which can make lifting it into your washer a bit tricky. Additionally, some customer reviews note the pattern can fade with a lot of wear; this isn’t an issue noted very frequently, though, so you can trust your Ruggable entryway rug to last.

West Elm Origins Woven Kitchen Mat

Best Water-Resistant

What We Like

  • Colorful, vibrant pattern

  • Shed- and water-resistant

  • Sustainably sourced and Fair Trade certified

What We Don’t Like

  • No anti-slip backing

  • Spot-clean only

Made entirely of recycled polyester, West Elm’s Origins Woven Kitchen Mat is the perfect option for people who want a cute runner that won’t be damaged or made worse for the wear when it comes in contact with water. The recycled polyester fibers used to create this entryway rug are hand-woven and feature an eclectic boho design that combines deep navy hues with red and cream colors. It’s an eye-catching addition in any space, and the white fringe ends add a bit of personality. Plus, if you’re a conscious shopper, you’ll love that this product is made with sustainably-sourced materials and is Fair Trade certified.

Since the rug is made of synthetic fibers, it’s completely shed-resistant, which is great for high-traffic areas. However, you’ll definitely want to invest in an anti-slip rug runner, as the thin rug doesn’t include a non-slip backing, which can cause it to slide around underfoot.

WellnessMats Antique Light Linen Mat

Best for Hardwood Floors

What We Like

  • Supportive and well-cushioned underfoot

  • Spill-, puncture-, and heat-resistant

  • 99.99 percent antimicrobial

  • Easy to clean

What We Don’t Like

  • Less traction than carpet

  • Can slide on slick floors

If you need a bit of cushioning underfoot because your home features hardwood floors, Crate & Barrel’s WellnessMats Antique Light Linen Mat is a wonderfully supportive and durable option. Made of polyurethane, this entryway pick feels almost squishy to the touch. This not only gives you padding, but it’s also easier on your joints and super cozy to stand on (which makes it particularly great if you’re stopping guests to remove shoes or don layers before heading indoors or outdoors.) Both the top and bottom have non-slip surfaces, and the top is water- and puncture-resistant so you don’t have to worry about spills or wear. Plus, if you’re concerned about dirt, the highly antimicrobial surface will keep you confident in its cleanliness–and it’s also very easy to wipe or wash clean.

The best part about this mat is that you can use a mop or vacuum to make sure it gets super clean. We also love that it’s available in 13 different colors and two different lengths. Just note that it can slide slightly on slick floors, though it does offer a backing to help limit movement.

RUGGABLE x Jonathan Adler Washable Rug

Best Washable

What We Like

  • Machine-washable

  • Available in a wide range of shapes and sizes

  • Stain- and water-resistant

  • Sleek minimalist pattern

What We Don’t Like

  • Very thin

Ruggable’s rugs–like this Jonathan Adler Washable Rug–are unlike any others because they can be detached from their non-slip backing (which comes in a thin standard version or a cushier, thicker padded version) and thrown directly in the washing machine. And when you’re searching for an easy-to-maintain entryway rug, this one offers all the function of an easy-to-clean rug with a design that will add a touch of modernity to any space. Sleek and minimalist, it’s a standout rug in any home’s entry space, and though it’s white, you can easily trust it to stay fresh and clean thanks to its stain-resistant nature. The rug itself is made of polyester, and it’s also water-resistant, so any spills will definitely come out in the wash.

However, while this Ruggable rug’s standout perk is its washable nature, it’s worth noting that the rug is quite thin. No matter what size or shape you choose, it’s designed to be so thin so it fits in your washing machine; for some, however, it’s just too thin underfoot for personal preference.

Couristan Recife Checkered Field Rug

Best Large

What We Like

  • Mold- and mildew-resistant

  • Suitable for indoor or outdoor use

  • All-weather polypropylene construction

What We Don’t Like

  • No backing

If you have a super long entryway or hallway that you need to protect, Couristan’s Recife Checkered Field Runner Rug is a great option. This extra-large entryway rug offers more length than many other products, and it provides you with a whole lot of versatility. Designed for indoor and outdoor use, it’s incredibly durable and can withstand exposure to moisture, dirt and grime without looking worse for the wear thanks to its enhanced polypropylene fibers. The pile is completely flat, so it also works well under or near doors. This rug’s tight weave is also great at preventing dirt from embedding in the fibers, which can cause deterioration over time.

Plus, if you live somewhere prone to wet weather, you’ll love the mold- and mildew-resistant nature of the rug. However, keep in mind that it doesn’t come with a backing of any kind–for true non-slip protection, you’ll need to add a pad or some rug adhesive underneath.

Price at time of publish: $77 for a 2.3 x 11.8 feet

Lahome Collection Traditional Area Rug

Best Small

What We Like

  • Skid-resistant backing

  • Colorful Persian-inspired patterns

  • Stain-resistant

  • Fibers won’t shed

What We Don’t Like

  • Takes a while to lay flat

  • Arrives with noticeable wrinkles

The Traditional Non-Slip Area Rug from the Lahome Collection features a gorgeous Persian design with shades of blues, reds, greens and yellows. But beyond its attractive pattern and variety of different shape choices, this rug is a great fit for small spaces because of the range of more customized sizes offered. It can fit in small mudrooms or narrow entryways just fine. This rug is well-made for durability, thanks to its stain-resistant  and non-shedding nature, which helps keep it looking stellar over many uses. Plus, the back of the rug features a skid-resistant backing, which completely eliminates the need for a rug pad. While it’s super low-pile, the polyester fibers are still soft to the touch so that it feels welcoming on bare feet.

The brand notes that it could take two weeks for the rug to fully expand and lay flat, so don’t panic if the corners pop up or a slew of wrinkles appears immediately after unrolling it. Since it’s made of polyester fibers, it won’t hold on to dust or grime, but make sure you vacuum it to keep it clean. Overall, it’s the perfect option for anyone trying to add a dash of color to their space.

Price at time of publish: $21 for 2 x 3 fee

Dimensions: 2 x 3 feet, plus 13 additional sizes | Pile: Not listed | Shapes: Rectangular or round

We love Pottery Barns Wheatley Synthetic Rug with Anti-Slip Backing for its durability and impressive all-around design, which hides dirt and holds up under foot well in high-traffic entryways. However, if you’re looking for an easy-to-maintain alternative, the RUGGABLE x Jonathan Adler Washable Rug is the perfect option as it can be tossed right in your washing machine any time it develops dirt.

What to Look for in Entryway Rugs

Size, Pile, and Shape

When considering the size of an entryway rug, as Brauer notes, it’s best to search for a rectangular rug that will leave about 6 inches between its edges and the walls of your entryway. Rectangular (and runner-style) rugs tend to offer the most coverage, which is key if you're hoping to keep dirt and grime from getting tracked into your home. This way, the entire portion of your floor is protected.

When it comes to pile, a low pile height is recommended for entryways. The pile can affect both door clearance and a rug's longevity. Higher-pile rugs, like your typical plush wool picks, can easily get caught underneath doors. Additionally, fluffier piles tend to collect more dirt and may not offer the same level of durability as shorter fibers, which are less likely to stain and take in dirt and grime over time.

Material

Brauer emphasizes the importance of “high-quality fibers” in entryway rugs because they are the least likely to shed, and they’re sure to hold up over time. These options include tightly-woven jute, like The Citizenry's Shayak Jute Rug, as well as thick polyester that's tightly woven, like Pottery Barn's Wheatley Synthetic Easy Care Rug. As we mentioned above, shorter fibers tend to capture dirt better and last longer, giving you an entryway rug that's welcoming yet also able to withstand high traffic and plenty of everyday dirt. You can also opt for a rug crafted from washable fibers, which allow you to easily clean your entryway pick right in your own washing machine (we like Ruggable's Kamran Rug for this!)

Care and maintenance

Care and maintenance depend largely on the materials of your rug, but all of the materials can (and should!) be vacuumed at least weekly. Vacuuming these rugs will keep particles from settling into the fibers of your rug, which will cause them to degrade over time. For spills, check the care instructions to determine if your rug can be thrown into the washing machine, but otherwise opt for a damp cloth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of rug is best for an entryway?

The biggest details to keep in mind are pile height and material. You want to make sure your door has plenty of clearance over your rug, so this typically means you want a pile height that’s as low as possible. Finally, it’s best to choose fibers like jute for resilience or polyester for its durability.

How big should a rug be in an entryway?

It’s best to choose a rectangular rug that will only leave about 6 inches of space between its edges and the wall—this way, the bulk of your floor is protected.

What color rug shows the least dirt?

Both color and pattern should be taken into account if you’re trying to minimize the appearance of dirt. Generally, medallion or Persion-style rugs are busy enough to detract from the appearance of dirt, but they also include a range of neutral colors that will blend into your existing decor. That said, darker colors like gray, black and navy are always a safe bet.
