The 11 Best Electric Shavers for Women, Tested & Reviewed by Editors

If you’ve ever used a disposable women’s razor, you know from experience these drugstore tools can only take you so far — and thats’s where the best women’s electric razors come into play. Disposable razors generally have a short shelf life; according to the American Academy of Dermatology, you should replace disposable razors every five to seven shaves. And while manual razors can deliver a close shave, putting the blade to the skin (especially when said blade becomes dull) puts you at a greater risk for nicks and cuts. Luckily, there are alternative hair removal methods (besides stealing his razor), like waxing, sugaring, laser hair removal, or, upgrading your gadget to a women’s electric razor.

More from WWD

The best electric shavers are revved up with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, and they incorporate perforated foil blades that are smooth on the outside and sharp on the inside. By creating a dual-blade effect, these devices expose individual hairs so you can remove it quickly and deeply from the root. This can help delay hair regrowth and prolong the time in between your shaves.

According to NYC-based dermatologist Dr. Hadley King, there are many additional benefits to using a women’s electric razor as far as how the device removes hair from the skin, and this is especially true for those who are prone to ingrown hair growth, Dr. King tells WWD. “Ingrown hairs (skin-colored or red bumps that contain a trapped hair growing down into the skin) are more likely to occur when hair is curly, and/or when skin covers the area where hair is growing,” Dr. King explains. “Therefore ingrown hairs can be decreased by not shaving closely — for example, use an electric razor rather than a blade so that the hair, even at its shortest, is above the skin surface.”

As far as irritation goes, board-certified Miami dermatologist of Riverchase Dermatology, Dr. Stacy Chimento recommends those with particularly sensitive skin also reach for electric shavers as they glide over the skin rather than giving you a super close shave. “This means less irritation and no chance of cuts, as opposed to blades that scrape and damage your face or skin,” Dr. Chimento tells WWD. “To be clear, this does not mean that electric razors have no irritation. However, they are generally easier on sensitive skin.”

Our editorial team spent weeks testing out a number of women’s electric razors on our skin to find the very best. We assessed ease of use, battery life, and results, also noting whether or not the blades caused irritation. If you’re after a safe, clean shave, read on to discover the best electric razors and shavers.

Editor testing and review notes: “I really liked this razor,” says our tester. “The shave wasn’t close after the first pass like it would be with a traditional razor, but after two or three passes, it did the trick. What I especially liked was that despite the multiple passes, my skin didn’t get irritated at all.”

The Finishing Touch Flawless Legs hair remover looks like something out of a sci-fi movie, but we promise it’s not a robot; it’s an electric razor specifically designed to eliminate any unwanted hair growth along the legs. Plated with 18-karat white gold for a sophisticated aesthetic, nearly 9,000 shoppers rave about this tool, noting that the hair removal device works well and looks nice in your bathroom. The electric razor has an ergonomic design for easy control, reducing the likelihood of accidental nicks or scrapes, and it operates without soap or water. Its bright LED lights ensure you’ll never miss a spot, while its rechargeable lithium-ion battery makes shaving possible anywhere, anytime.

Editor testing and review notes: “I’m a tried-and-true waxer, but my coarse hair still grows back fast and this cute, handheld shaver was perfect for the in-between moments where there were just a few errant hairs, but not enough to go all-in on waxing,” says our reviewer. “I also used it on my legs and I was honestly surprised at how well it moved over my ankles and knees — I always manage to nick myself — but I didn’t with this razor, even after doing two passes. I’d recommend cleaning it out after each use, or else the hairs get stuck and you’ll need to do more passes, but it’s really easy to take apart and brush out the hair.”

Clio Palmperfect Electric Shaver

Best Handheld Electric Razor for Women

  • For wet/dry skin: Both

  • Weight: .01 pounds

  • Power source: Two AAA batteries

  • Battery life: Variable

  • Warranty: 2 year limited warranty

  • What’s included: One electric shaver and batteries

  • Pros

    • Handheld design is fun to use

    • Ergonomic design

    • Has a soft rubber grip that came in handy when I used it in the shower

    • Small size is easy to store underneath the sink or in a vanity

    • Gentle on skin

  • Cons

    • Small size means it takes longer to do a large surface area

While we’d never suggest making a purchase solely for its pleasing aesthetic, we can’t deny Clio’s Palmperfect electric shaver caught our attention with its vibrant designs. The eye-popping electric razor will fit into your hand like a glove (hence the name “palmperfect”), and that’s on purpose. With more control over the device, the less likely it is for you to come out of the shower with scratches or cuts. What’s more, the handheld device is also suitable for dry or wet use, so you can score a close shave wherever, whenever. But note: Unlike other electric razors that run on a charge, this one is battery-operated, so you’ll want to have two batteries at the ready.

Editor testing and review notes: “This razor was fun to hold and made shaving fun, even — a hard task!” our reviewer said. “The head was flexible, but it was small, so it took just as long as a regular razor would, although my skin was definitely less irritated than it normally is after shaving (I’m prone to razor burn) and I didn’t get a single nick.”

Made with ultra-thin, hypoallergenic outer foils, the Panasonic Close Curves Electric Shaver for Women has been engineered with four ultra-sharp floating blades designed to guarantee a precise shave. Its special features include a built-in pop-up trimmer (because small details matter), and a bikini comb attachment to help groom and shape your more sensitive areas. Editor testing and review notes: “I immediately loved this zen-looking mint colored razor and I’m happy to share that the razor itself was pretty great, too,” reports our tester. “The first pass didn’t offer a terribly close shave, but when I went back over it, I noticed that the foils were somewhat springy, so I gently pressed down on the second pass, which removed all of my stubble. Once you find your shaving groove and the amount of pressure you’re comfortable applying to your skin, this electric shaver will easily do the rest.”

Dermaflash Luxe+ Advanced Sonic Dermaplaning + Peach Fuzz Removal

Best Electric Women’s Facial Shaver

  • For wet/dry skin: Dry

  • Weight: 1.92 oz

  • Power source: USB charging stand

  • Battery life: Varies on usage and frequency

  • Warranty: No

  • What’s included: One electric dermaplane, four refill blades, cleanser gel for skin prep, charging doc and USB

  • Pros:

    • Gentle on delicate facial skin

    • Proprietary safety technology that prevents nicks and cuts

    • Includes extra razor cartridges

    • Multiple colorways available

  • Cons:

    • Pricey

If you’re new to dermaplaning — using a blade to remove fine peach fuzz and dead skin on your face — Dermaflash’s Luxe+ Advanced Sonic Dermaplaning and Peach Fuzz Removal kit contains everything you need to try it home safely. The brand debuted this new-and-improved dermaplane device last fall, and it’s complete with souped up sonic technology, sharper (but still safe!) razor edges, and multiple intensity settings. The included skin-prepping gel cleanser contains ingredients that remove excess oil from the surface of your skin, allowing a cleaner shave. Once you’re done dermaplaning, follow with a cold rinse and plenty of moisturizer — your skin will sop up all those ingredients with dead cells out of the way.

Editor testing and review notes: “I dermaplane regularly, so I’ve tried many different tools and devices,” our tester explains. “Since trying out this tool, it’s become my go-to. The device lightly vibrates as you glide it across your skin — I’m convinced that light wiggling of the blades helps de-fuzz skin better than manual options. The silicone material makes it easy to grip while I maneuver it around different planes and contours of my face and jawline. Fuzzier areas required two passes to fully remove hair.”

Schick Hydro Silk Perfect Finish Trimmer

  • For wet/dry skin: Both

  • Weight: .47 grams

  • Power source: AA battery

  • Battery life: Variable

  • Warranty: No

  • What’s included: Face trimmer, eyebrow comb and trimmer, bikini trimmer, touch-up disposable razor, and cleaning brush

  • Pros

    • Quite a powerful shaver for a single AA battery power

    • Very close shave — one pass for the face, two for the bikini area

    • Waterproof shaver that can be used in and out of the shower

    • Easy to clean and comes with a cleaning brush and beauty bag for storage

    • Razor is more compact than your average option because it is intended to target smaller areas

  • Cons

    • Compact design isn’t great for larger surface areas, like the legs, unless you’re willing to stop and brush out debris throughout the shaving process

A must-have in every grooming routine, the Schick Hydro Silk Perfect Finish Trimmer offers an extremely precise and close shave for your brow hair, facial hair, and bikini line. The electric shaver is an 8-in-1 device, featuring multipurpose attachment ends that include a face trimmer, an eyebrow comb and trimmer, a bikini trimmer and comb, a touch-up disposable razor, and a cleaning brush. Each purchase also comes with a beauty pouch to store it all. Note: This device is battery-operated, so you’ll want to have AA batteries at the ready should its power fizzle out. It’s also worth highlighting that this little but mighty electric shaver can be used in and outside the shower, depending on your preference.

Editor testing and review notes: “I was very skeptical about this razor at first. I would not normally use an electric razor; however, I was pretty impressed,” says our tester. “I preferred the trimmer and face shaver. I used both on my upper lip and was equally happy with the results — way better than a straight razor and just as close as waxing or threading and none of the pain. The shave was close immediately after one pass, but needed two passes when trimming my pubic hair.”

Brori Electric Razor for Women

Best Battery Life

  • For wet/dry skin: Both

  • Weight: 5.44 ounces

  • Power source: USB rechargeable via proprietary charging stand

  • Battery life: 60 minutes run time

  • Warranty: Yes

  • What’s included: One electric razor, charging stand, USB cable, and cleaning brush

  • Pros

    • Refreshingly simple design

    • Has 3 hypoallergenic, stainless steel blades that produced no irritation

    • Razor head is bendy but not overly flexible, so it will get into contours and small areas while still feeling structured and the right amount of stiff

    • LED light illuminates the body area you’re shaving so you can easily see if you need a second pass or missed a spot

    • 60 minutes of shaving is a lot — I used the razor four or five times without needing to recharge

  • Cons

    • May slip out of charging stand when wet

Boasting a sleek design and smart green hue, the Brori Electric Razor for Women is stocked with three high-speed, incredibly sharp razor blade made with hypoallergenic, 3D floating foil stainless steel that allows it to effortlessly and precisely shave your arms, underarms, legs, and bikini line. This workhorse is suitable for both wet and dry usage, and also has an LED light feature that illuminates your skin as it shaves to ensure you’ve gotten every hair. It sounds impressive because it is, especially when you consider Brori’s Electric Razor’s low-noise output (anyone who loathes that constant humming sound will love this pick). What’s more, this electric shaver is cordless and charges via USB (plug it directly into the wall or sit it on its station). One full charge yields a whopping 60 minutes of shave time (a significant amount compared to other models), so it’s an especially great option for frequent travelers.

Editor testing and review notes: “My main takeaway for this razor is that it is a solid option for those who can’t be bothered with all the bells and whistles that you probably won’t use anyway. However, it did have one LED light underneath so I could see what I was doing and whether I needed to do a second pass or not, but otherwise, this is a simple, no frills razor that will require a few passes depending on the length of your hair. On shorter stubble, I needed to do three to four passes to eliminate the hair completely, but the razor caught the longer hairs quite well for trimming. I have sensitive skin and was surprised that even with multiple passes on my legs, there wasn’t any irritation.”

Braun Epilator Silk-épil 9 Hair Removal for Women

Best Women’s Electric Razor for Sensitive Skin

  • For wet/dry skin: Both

  • Weight: .98 pounds

  • Power source: Rechargeable

  • Battery life: 50 minutes run time

  • Warranty: No

  • What’s included: Epilator, traditional razor, trimmer cap, and shaver head

  • Pros

    • Extremely effective at removing hair on the first pass

    • Unlike some razors that don’t “catch” short stubble, this tool grabs onto everything for a completely clean, hair-free finish

    • Produces a just-waxed, stubble-free softness that lasts for several days

    • New hair grows back slower and is easier to manage

    • Especially great option for those who prefer to shave daily or have sensitive skin that is prone to razor burn or irritation

  • Cons

    • The technique and sensation take some getting used to

Designed with a micro-grip tweezer technology to deliver 40 tweezers-worth of hair removal, the Braun Epilator Silk-épil 9 9-870 device helps you achieve silky-smooth skin and delay hair regrowth. Its ergonomic design and pivoting head allow for expert-level precision, helping you reach every hair without irritating or cutting your skin. The set comes with four attachment heads, including a massage cap to reduce any painful sensations, a trimmer cap for smaller, harder-to-reach areas, and a shaver head for extra sensitive areas. It also includes a Venus Extra Smooth Swirl Razor for additional grooming, while Braun’s SensoSmart technology uses red light to ensure the right amount of pressure is applied as it glides over the skin. The device can be used dry or wet, and the more you use it, the less painful the epilation becomes.

Editor testing and review notes: “Although this isn’t technically an electric shaver, I was interested to try it because I’ve never used an epilator before,” says our tester. “Just like other reviewers, I experienced a moderate level of discomfort since this tool plucks hair at the root, but once I saw how efficiently it removed hair, I decided it was well worth the discomfort, which became more and more tolerable as I got into a rhythm. Also, it’s important to exfoliate or use a toner on your skin before using this tool. I think of this process as a long-term endeavor: The results last way longer than shaving since you’re literally pulling the hair out of the root, and just like with waxing, the new hair that grows in is softer, lighter and less frequent.”

Philips BikiniPerfect Advanced Bikini Trimmer Kit

Best Women’s Electric Razor for Bikini Area

  • For wet/dry skin: Both

  • Weight: 10.93 ounces

  • Power source: Proprietary charger

  • Battery life: 60 minutes run time

  • Warranty: Full 2 year warranty

  • What’s included: Trimmer, three attachment heads, and storage bag

  • Pros

    • Trimmer is the real hero attachment, slicing down long hairs fast

    • Motor is relatively quiet

    • Terrific 60-minute battery life

    • Micro shaver attachment is small enough to get into any contour or crevice and can be used forward, backwards and across skin to cut down hair that grows in weird directions, even if it does need a few extra passes

    • Gentle on skin — caused zero irritation or razor burn

  • Cons

    • Shaver isn’t quite as efficient as other options

The bikini area can be tough to tackle. This is mostly due to the fact that the skin is hyper-sensitive, making it extra prone to nicks and scrapes. Enter the Philips BikiniPerfect Advanced Bikini Trimmer Kit: a micro-shaver equipped with four trimming attachments that can reach hairs as short as 0.6 millimeters. Grooming your bikini line doesn’t feel like a chore with this device’s irritation-resistant, stubble-removing blades and precision comb that features five length settings. What’s also cool (and a little confusing) about this electric razor for women is it can also be used to reshape and define your brows. To reiterate, its specialty is removing hair down there, but it doubles as a trimmer for stubble on your face, too. Do with that what you will.

Editor testing and review notes: “I like a lot about this razor’s three attachments. The micro shaver head is great for a super targeted approach to a smaller surface area (like the bikini), while the trimmer was sharp and precise, cutting down long hairs with ease, and the the precision comb, which to be honest I didn’t use because I like to be clean shaven, but I respect it and am glad Philips provided an option for those who want to rock a little hair down there. I used the trimmer and the shaver in and out of the shower, but found it easiest to use on dry skin and in bright light to see what I was doing. I wouldn’t use the shaver anywhere other than my bikini or underarm because I needed to do several takes for the stubble to be totally gone.”

I used the exfoliator head on my bikini area to prevent ingrown hairs (a constant nemesis), and followed up with the trimmer then the shaver for one of the closest, smoothest shaves I’ve ever had. In fact, I liked the exfoliator head so much that I even use it when I’m not going to shave, but just to get really silky skin on my arms and legs — it’s like dry brushing, but way more efficient.”

What to Consider When Choosing Women’s Electric Razors

Selecting a razor specifically for shaving your legs is slightly more nuanced than the type you’d want for your bikini or underarm area. Keep these considerations in mind while you’re shopping:

  • Razor head features: Look for a razor that has a medium to large sized razor head, which will cover as much real estate as possible with a single swipe. Small, focused razor heads work best on tricky-to-navigate areas like bikini lines. Another factor to consider is whether you can shave your legs in multiple directions with ease. Hair grows in multiple directions, particularly on our legs, so having a razor that can tackle hair from all angles is key for a smooth shave.

  • Dry or wet shave: The best electric razors for women do both. Plus, investing in a dual-action razor will ultimately benefit your skin as using a high-quality women’s shaving cream or gel reduces the risk of skin irritation. “Some shavers are only suitable for dry shaving, which isn’t a good choice for skin that’s easily irritated,” Dr. King says. “Keep in mind, however, that you will have to keep your shaver fully charged as wet/dry shavers can’t be operated while plugged in. They also require thorough cleaning.”

  • Cost: One of the perks of using manual razors is that they’re less expensive than women’s electric shavers. But you get what you pay for — inexpensive manual razors are often lower quality, which can result in a higher likelihood of nicks, cuts, or razor burn. If you’re switching over to an electric razor for women, you’re better off making the investment on a premium device. “You want the razor to last as long as possible, since one of the main benefits of an electric razor is not having to purchase disposable components,” celebrity aesthetician Joshua Ross of SkinLab tells WWD. “Investing in one that delivers results and is long-lasting will be worth the extra money.”

  • Battery life: “The longer the battery life, the better,” says Dr. Chimento. Battery life is a common qualm with electric razors — ones that die on the job leave you stranded with stubble. We personally vetted each electric razor on this list, noting the battery duration during multiple shaves. Allow rechargeable options to fully charge before using them for the best experience.

The Different Types of Women’s Electric Razors

There are two main types of electric shavers: The first is foil shavers, which Dr. Chimento explains are “made with a thin curved metal foil that covers cutting blades.” The second is a rotary shaver which “uses circular blades and has three round heads that work to conform to your skin.” So which is the best electric shaver for women? Dr. Chimento tells WWD it really comes down to personal preference. Choose an option that feels comfortable for you and caters to your hair type. Foil razors are best for fine hair and generally lend a close shave, while rotary shavers are your best bet for coarse, curly hair.

You can also choose between plug-in or cordless razors. “Cordless razors provide convenience and freedom, however, you may have to charge them frequently,” Dr. Chimento explains. “A plug-in razor will provide you with maximum power at all times, but you may not like having to spin up the cord and set it away.” Bottom line: This is another small detail that could make a big impact on your overall shaving experience.

How to Use an Electric Shaver and Tips for How to Shave with an Electric Razor

It’s important to review your electric shaver’s manual, because the process is a bit different than how to shave your legs with a disposable razor. To achieve the best results and truly reduce irritation while using an electric shaver, follow these simple three steps before every shave.

  1. Prep your skin: This step is essential. In fact, Dr. King recommends reserving a solid 10 minutes (at least) of prep time prior to shaving in order to properly soften the outer layer of skin. If you’re using a dry electric shaver, make sure to moisten your skin with warm water so that your hair is easier to shave. For those enlisting the help of a wet electric shaver, cover your legs in shaving cream to prevent friction between the razor and your skin.

  2. Shave skin carefully: When it comes time to remove hair, board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Jessie Cheung recommends applying “gentle pressure with the razor while holding your skin taut.” For a closer shave, glide the razor against the grain, Cheung continues, adding that if you have a foil shaver it’s best to move in short, back and forth strokes. If you have a rotary head, she says, “move in slow circles.”

  3. Soothe your skin: Post-shave, make sure to follow up with a soothing and hydrating body lotion to calm your skin and lock in moisture. It’s also important to abide by some best practices beyond shaving days. This includes regularly moisturizing the skin and regular exfoliation.

How to Clean Your Electric Razor

Cleaning your electric razor is crucial for keeping your gadget functioning like new. This can be done by simply rinsing it with warm, soapy water (keeping your fingers away from the blade as much as possible). Any remaining residue can be wiped clean with rubbing alcohol, Dr. King says.

With good care, blades of electric razors can last for months. However, Dr. Chimento tells WWD it’s hard to give an exact timeframe for when to replace your electric razor because it ultimately depends on how thick your hair is and how often you use your razor. “You should replace electric cutters and razor heads about once every 12 months,” Dr. Chimento estimates. “Make sure to look over your foil and blades to make sure there is not any noticeable wear to avoid more significant issues.” If you notice dullness or any signs of rust, it’s best to swap it out.

The Best Beauty Products to Use When Shaving With a Women’s Electric Razor

Once you find the electric razor suitable for all of your hair removal needs, the next step is to not only learning how to use it, but also identifying the best skin-care products to incorporate into your shaving routine. According to Dr. King, there are a few items worth investing in to enhance your regimen and reap better results (aka smooth, healthy skin): a gentle exfoliating scrub, some sort of shaving lubricant (i.e. shaving cream) and a post-shave moisturizer. The products below will pamper your skin before, during, and after you shave.

Dove Gentle Exfoliating Body Wash

Prior to shaving, Dr. King tells WWD you should spend about 10 minutes in warm water (either soaking or under the shower head) to help soften the outer layer of skin for easier removal and less risk of razor burn. Then, using a warm, damp washcloth, gently massage a body scrub onto the area you’re shaving to further prep the skin. Dove’s gentle exfoliating body wash is a personal favorite of Dr. King’s as it includes “gentle exfoliants (re: sea minerals) to help gently wash away dead skin, which helps to release any ingrown hairs stuck under the surface of dead skin prior to shaving,” she says. It’s also a super hydrating formula made with plant-based moisturizers that absorb quickly into the skin.

Schaf The Shave Cream

When it’s time to shave, Dr. King says you should always use some sort of shaving lubricant with a sharp blade to irritate the skin as little as possible. She recommends The Shave Cream from Schaf because it contains coconut oil, aloe and hyaluronic acid — a terrific trio that “softens the hair and provides an optimum slip for a comfortable shave,” Dr. King says. Plus, the formula is fragrance-free and soap-free, so it’s suitable for sensitive skin.

Eos Shea Better 24 Hour Moisture Shave Cream

Another Dr. King-approved shaving cream is this gentle formula from Eos. Shea Better is formulated with — you guessed it — shea butter, offering a solid 24 hours of hydration and the silky-smooth shave you desire. This formula also contains aloe to soothe skin. It’s intensely hydrating and free of parabens and phthalates, so it’s ideal for all skin types, but especially sensitive skin.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment

When shaving, it’s also important to have a reparative salve on-hand, just in case nicks do happen and your skin requires a little extra TLC. Enter: Aquaphor Healing Ointment. “An over-the-counter hydrocortisone can help soothe shaving irritation, as well as an emollient such as Aquaphor Healing Ointment,” Dr. King tells WWD. It creates a protective barrier over the irritated area, supporting oxygen flow in order to encourage optimal healing. Plus, it’s a multi-faceted product that can also be used as a hand cream, night cream, lip treatment, and more.

How We Tested the Best Electric Razors for Women

It was kind of a doozy, but we tested and reviewed each of the 10 women’s electric shavers in this story. We selected these shavers after pouring over dozens of products and customer reviews to bring you the very best electric razors for women to achieve the closest shave possible. To ensure all razors were thoroughly tested, each one was used — where directions allowed — on wet and dry skin, as well as on several different body areas. For most electric razors for women, the writer enlisted additional testing help from the WWD Shop editorial team and other peers to tap the full range of how each electric shaver interacted with a variety of hair types and textures. These new 2023 women’s electric razors were tested over a week-long period. We want to put our hair in the best hands, so we did the hard product testing to highlight top electric razor options for every woman within an array of price points and for a variety of body areas.
